Samsung Galaxy GT-S5830L cell phone not showing in KDE Device Notifier
by Mario Storti
KDE Device Notifier stopped showing my cell phone after upgrade to
Fedora 17/18. (I don't know exactly if it was for F17 or for F18,
since I did the upgrade to F17 and immediately after I did the upgrade
to F18.)
I did some research and found many posts related to MTP, suggesting to
install mtpfs, jmtpfs. I followed the recipes with no success.
Strangely enough the cell phone is shown and mounts OK if I use
Gnome. Also if I browse the filesystem within Gimp (in KDE!) I can see
the cell phone sdcard. When I go to Device Notifier Settings ->
Removable Devices, the phone is listed, but I can do anything with
it. If I hover with the mouse on the sdcard then a popup shows
UDI:/orgfreedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/sdb
If I do $ lsusb, I get
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 04e8:689e Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd GT-S5670
[Galaxy Fit]
When I unmount the SDCARD on the phone I get the following in /var/log/messages

worst update experience
by Neal Becker
In the continuing saga, you may recall that I had updated to kde-
unstable, testing, but then had a problem with DPMS not working. I finally
reverted (with some difficulty) to standard f18. Turns out the problem wasn't
the kde update after all, it was an update of google-chrome-beta.
So I decided to try kde-4.10 again. Not a happy day.
First, the yum transaction just hung 1/2 way through. I had to kill it. Then
had to rpm --rebuilddb. This left me with a massive amount of dups. After
surgery to repair the dupes I got synced to kde-unstable,kde-testing with no
reported problems.
I tried logging in, but found a problem with wallet and wifi password. I tried
logging out, removing ~/.kde, and logging in again. Tried several times, but
each time it just looped on trying to create kwallet. Apparantly, there is some
state stored outside of ~/.kde - but I don't know where.
I verified that a test user account could login and connect to wifi.
Finally I moved all of my home dir out of the way, and then I could login and
create a new wallet OK and connect.
Slowly moved files and directories back into my account.

Strange painting issue
by Brendan Jones
Hi all,
I've got a perplexing issue whereby a Qt app (qtractor) instantiates a
plugin with a GTK UI - the UI of the plugin always comes up black.
However running qtractor with the same plugin under XFCE does not
exhibit this problem.
Qtractor uses the suil library to instantiate the plugin UI's - it
bascially reads the meta-data of a plugin and calls the appropriate suil
sub-library to handle instantiation. The host shouldn't care.
However, there is another app called jalv, a command line LV2 host which
also uses the suil library and it doesn't exhibit this problem.
I have desktop effects turned off etc. Any ideas what might be the problem?
Note I am using the prop. nvidia driver.
regards,
Brendan

kde-4.10 tracker bug
by Rex Dieter
In the kde-sig meeting today, it was mentioned we had an oversight about
not yet creating a kde-4.10 tracker bug. Fixed now,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=907993
(alias kde-4.10)
So, if anyone encounters kde-4.10 specific issues, please file them and
block this bug. Ideally, we'll have this tracker clear by the time we
release official 4.10.x builds for f18 (tentatively scheduled for when
4.10.1 lands).
thanks for testing!

Strange Apper Issue
by Ed Greshko
I have a strange problem with Apper on an F18 system which was installed from scratch. I never get a notification on the systray that updates are available.
When I click on the small triangle next to the digital clock a list of 6 items are shown....
Desktop Search File Indexing
Device Notifier
KDE Wallet Manager
Manage Print Jobs
Notifications
Software Updater
Except for "Software Updater" each one of these has an icon next to them.
If I Software Updater and choose "Check for new updates" a gear appears on the systray. If I hover over the gear it says: "Your System is up to date".
However if I run "apper" from the command line and then click on "Updates" it will check for new updates and it will find them. In this instance, one update for nfs-utils is available.
The F18 install was done without touching /home. However, even a newly created user seems to have the same problem.
Any ideas to what to check?

KDE 4.10, oxygen-gtk2 and icon themes
by Maciek Borzęcki
Hi all,
I'm trying out KDE 4.10, and there seems to be an issue regarding icon
theme handling for GTK2 apps with certain icon themes.
For the record, the default Oxygen theme works for both GTK2 and GTK3
apps. Switching, for instance, to KFaenza only GTK3 apps have proper
icon theme, while GTK2 (like yumex, google-chrome, firefox) fallback
to default gnome icon theme. Behaviour is the same, even if I set GTK
theme to something else than oxygen-gtk, like Adwaita or Zukitwo.
For comparison, when same icon theme is selected in Xfce, the icons
are properly loaded.
It seems that the problems arise only for themes that use index.theme
to indicate respective size icons (there are no <size>x<size>
directories in top dir).
I've hooked up strace to Firefox to see what files are being accessed,
and it turns out that if I'm running a GTK2 app under Xfce, firs
index.theme is accesed, and all relevant icons are loaded:

However, under KDE the log shows that KFaenza/index.theme is opened,
but no icons are loaded afterwards. The GTK proceeds to open
Faeza/index.theme as it's first in the inherit list and so on, ending
up with default gnome icons at the end.

Then a Tango theme under KDE:

18256:4426 stat("/home/maciek/.kde/share/icons/gnome",

18265:4426 open("/usr/share/icons/Tango/16x16/mimetypes/image-x-generic.png",
O_RDONLY) = 20
Notice that there is an access pattern similar to the erroneous
KFaenza case. However the Tango theme does have a differentl layout of
directories (like 16x16, 22x22...) for storing icons of respective
sizes. This causes GTK2 apps to find proper icons.
It looks like the index.theme is either unused or cannot be
interpreted. Both environments have Net/IconThemeName is set to
KFaenza in xsettings (used dump_xsettings from xsettingsd package to
verify that).
Any clues what might be wrong here?
Cheers,

systemd in unstable repo ?
by Ed Greshko
Don't know how the body got lost.....
I was going to test KDE 4.10 so I enabled the unstable repo and noted that some systemd stuff is included
in the update. What is the connection between systemd and KDE 4.10?
