nntp (aka, usenet) client in kde?

I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also, search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is kde specific. -gene

Device notifier produces "malformed url" error since last update

proposing chromium as default browser (for f25+)

In my prior post, I included chromium in the list of browser candidates. If you're not familiar with it, it is essentially a free version of google chrome that recently made it's way into fedora package repositories. Advantages and features include: * based on same rendering engine as qtwebengine (that qupzilla uses) * has active, well-supported upstream * some kde integration: kde file dialogs, kwallet for secrets * supports most chrome addons/extensions Disadvantages include: * pretty new to fedora (only a few weeks) * packaging/buildsystem is... messy and fragile (not unique here, qtwebengine suffers similarly but less so) * not 100% native (like qupzilla) -- Rex

Upgrading to F25 (soon to be alpha)

Hi, I have updated my laptop to F25 (soon to be alpha) using the dnf plugin, the process was smooth and uneventful. All seems to work with some small exceptions that seem to be related: 1) Plasma takes some time to show, I use two displays and the first shows immediately, as usual, but the second takes more than a minute to show. When it shows it is complete, the problem is the delay. The panel again takes some minutes to show, as soon as it shows it works normally. 2) The applications saved in a session, like dolphin, take a long time (again several minutes) to be responsive. As soon as they are responsive they work as usual. For some reason this does not affect konsole. 3) For qt based applications (I tried lyx, texstudio, calligra stage and kmail) to open a file File->Open takes more than a minute (several minutes sometimes). When the dialogue shows the everything proceeds normally. An example of case 3) is to attach a file to this message. If I drag and drop a file from dolphin to the window that I have used to compose the message the insertion is immediate. If on the other hand I use the menu "Attach->Attach File" it takes several minutes until the file chooser shows, and then everything works at normal pace. The reason to report this bug here is because the pattern seems related with qt and the interaction with file dialogues, as other dialogues seems to be OK. FWIW I tried the last kernel that I have used in F24 (4.7.2) and the result is the same. Any help is appreciated. :-) -- José Abílio

Fedora 24 KDE currently runs KDE Plasma 5.7.3. KDE announced two additional point releases (5.7.4, released this week, and 5.7.5, to be launched on Sep 13) preceding the launch of LTS version 5.8 later this year. Shall we expect Plasma upgrades to 5.7.4 and 5.7.5 on Fedora 24 KDE soon? In addition, will 5.8 be available to Fedora 24 or only made available on upcoming Fedora 25? Tentative / committed dates / roadmap for these KDE upgrades? Many thanks!

I'm trying to play an mp3 podcast on my Fedora-24/KDE laptop, and I am getting no sound. I'm told that Volume is at 60$ and is muted. I have not used Amarok for some time. Fwd: Koji issues with F25?

I asked this question on devel, but thought somebody here may have a clue as to what is happening.... I'm trying to build a new package. It completed with no issues on F26 (rawhide) and F24. However, the build keeps failing on F25???? Here is the build link which is reporting the error? Why would this fail only on F25? Doesn't make much sense. fedora-review complaining about un-owned qt/plasma directories

These are existing directories... not created by me. If I check using rpm -qf directory_name; they show un-owned. Plasma Weather Applet

I was looking around and found (what I think to be) a nice plasma weather applet. I prefer compact. Hover over the icon gives you a summary popup... if you left click, you get a nice meteogram display. It uses the yr.no service - which seems fairly comprehensive. Have fun!

Problem launching konsole from start menu

Hi I have a user who cannot launch konsole from the start menu. Nothing happens. If I start a different terminal and type konsole from the command line, it all works as expected. I'm not seeing any associated errors in .xsession-errors. By moving ~/.config ~/.local and ~/.kde to .off I was able to get the message: "Unable to make the service Konsole executable, aborting execution." when clicking the start menu item. Other users on the same system can launch konsole from the menu without problems. Any ideas how I can debug this please? Thanks Roderick Johnstone

Default Browser Voting - and apparent inconsistency with mission statement

Rex requested that I start a separate thread on this if I believed it warranted further discussion. I believe it does. I believe that the current voting proposal currently underway for the selection of default browser does not align with the mission statement of the Fedora KDE SIG. Below is the text of my previous message which was attached to the initial voting results. I understand that some voting has yet to be completed - but unless I am mistaken this isn't suppose to be a vote about browser personal preference. It is suppose to be a vote about which browser aligns with the published mission of the KDE SIG. ========================================= Thanks very much Rex for posting this so quickly. I would be interested in understanding the reason people voted the way they did. The issue IMO is that normally, when selecting a default you have well defined criteria for making the decision. This assists in making sure that everyone is on the same page and is making an objective decision. For example, as I mentioned before I'm a big proponent of all things Chrome - but even if the Chromium that exists in the Fedora repository was in a state that what I would consider stable (it's not, IMO) I would still choose qupzilla in this instance. It fits into what I believe would be the mission of the KDE spin. Obviously, there is an extreme disconnect between what I believe the mission to be, and the opinion of others. I believe the lack of clarity is causing friction. There can be a big difference between personal preference and adherence to a defined mission. From the wiki: "The KDE SIG (Special Interest Group) is a group of Fedora contributors that maintain KDE <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE> packages in Fedora. Their mission is to provide high-quality, usable KDE software packages to Fedora users and developers and to support one another in maintaining those packages." Granted, qupzilla is not an official KDE project, but it is definitely using KDE based technologies. That tells me that all things considered, if there is a browser that uses these technologies, and is functional - that it should be favored over other contenders - unless there is a complelling reason. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see that "compelling reason". Personal preference does NOT outweigh a mission statement. What am I missing here? From an outsider looking in, it appears that everyone is voting based upon different criteria and not adhering to the mission statement. Voting members have a responsibility to be consistent and objective. Mission statements exist to provide clarity, direction and to hold decision makers accountable.

Ctrl N not working on kmail

Ever since I installed Fedora on this laptop in May (Fedora 24 beta at the time I think) that kmail always display an annoying warning when I press Ctrl N (for a new message): The key sequence 'Ctrl+N' is ambiguous. Use 'Configure Shortcuts' from the 'Settings' menu to solve the ambiguity. No action will be triggered. The option was to go to Settings->Configure Shortcuts and remove the default shortcut from "New Message". Then it works. If I try to set the default shortcut to "New Message" action I get a warning: The 'Ctrl+N' key combination is already used by the New Message... action. Please select a different one. ???? I am puzzled, but at least now it works. :-) -- José Abílio

DPI >96 = Bad UI fonts in Geckos built with GTK3

UI fonts in Firefox, as noted in another thread, (and UI fonts in SeaMonkey), no longer match those configured in Plasma settings if Xorg's DPI is 120 or more (I've not tested at less): http://fm.no-ip.com/SS/Fedora/ff45ff48qz201-f25-168.jpg This began with building Geckos with GTK3 (rv46 and up in mozilla.org builds) instead of GTK2. In Mageia 5 and openSUSE 13.1, which are using GTK3 3.16 versions, FF fonts are as they should be. Supported Fedora releases all use GTK3 versions >3.16 for the latest FF and SM versions, which produce the too small Gecko fonts. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1269274 seems to explain why this is happening, but not whose job it should be to fix. Apparently Mozilla's not going to accept the responsibility. I asked on the gtk-devel list and got no response: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-devel-list/2016-July/msg00028.html Any ideas whose responsibility it should be? Anyone know of a KDE, Gnome/GTK or RedHat BZ bug already addressing this problem? Is there a fix in the form of an rpm I simply haven't discovered and installed? digikam5 problems

I recently upgraded to fedora 24 and so now get digikam 5.0.0. Unfortunately, like most of the rest of plasma5, it has thrown away my settings and started again. With digikam4, I had it set up so that photos were imported into a folder based on the date the image was taken. I can't find the option to do this. Is it possible or does everything have to be imported to the same folder? Once imported, I can find an option to rename based on date, but not one to move to a folder based on date (the rename dialog does not accept "/"). Is that possible or should i use bash and hope the digikam database catches up later? The included handbook (from the help menu), is version 1.2 (2010-02-20). It doesn't say which version of digikam it is for, but the contents seem to match what I recall of the previous version (e.g. the automatic renaming section). Should I raise bug reports for the lack of rename option and the old manual version or am I missing something obvious? Regards, Chris

Panel Move

I'm running a dual-monitor setup. One connected to HDMI the other to a DP. The HDMI is tagged as "primary". Today, during a chase, my cats managed to yank out the monitor cables. After putting them back in place the panel had shifted from the HDMI display to the DP display. I could find no setting or menu item to move the panel. So, I resorted to creating a new panel on the HDMI display and then deleting the one on the DP. A bit of a pain since I had to redo all the favorites and widgets. Is there a way to move a panel? I seem to recall back in the KDE4 days you could drag the panel to where you wanted it. That doesn't seem possible now. -- You're Welcome Zachary Quinto

not getting software update notifications

I just noticed, I seem to not be getting notifications that updates are available. Something broken? Any ideas? Running dnf update cli seems to be working.

copyq - qt based advanced clipboard manager

I just pushed a new testing update out to bodhi on this and realized that I may not have advised folks that copyq is available in the fedora repos. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it here is a link to a recent review article: http://goo.gl/1oMjHv It requires qt5 and has remarkable set of options. The project is active and updates are pushed in a timely manner. The one criticism I've seen is that it is "too advanced" and people get lost in the options. That really isn't the case. If you use the vanilla setup, it works just like any other clipboard manager. The advantage is if you want to do some neat things with your clipboard data, copyq will help you do it easily. Of course, if you want to play around, you need to RTFM. For those who like eye candy, the system area icon is animated and the scissors will "cut" when you clip something for the clipboard. Enjoy!
