F40 Progress with nvidia 470xx

I have posted earlier about this driver, which is not claimed to support wayland. It seemed to me that the kde support group, in abandoning x11, had chosen to create a dev-playground with little commitment to user-support. After almost-daily dnf upgrades my F40-only box does now appear to be usable with the low-end nvidia GT710 hardware and the xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-470xx package from the rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing repo. This is true only if I install plasma-workspace-x11 and choose the plasma-x11 desktop. Choosing plasma-wayland looks workable but fills /tmp with plasmashell crash reports. At present my grub command line gives nouveau, without hardware decoding, following the rpmfusion nvidia howto. This is ok for me, but maybe a different grub line could restore hardware support. I haven't recently experimented with my Windows 10 dual-boot box, with a similar video card. Last time I tried it, it consistently froze quite late in the boot sequence. HTH, John P

plasmashell keeps hanging

Running Plasma 6 on Wayland on Fedora 40. Every time I step away from my system for a while I come back to a hung plasmashell. I am able to recover by switching to a console on a different VT and restarting it (systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell.service) and waiting for 30 seconds or so. (Presumably systemd is killing it after some timeout.) Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas on how I can figure out what the heck is going on? -- ======================================================================== If your user interface is intuitive in retrospect ... it isn't intuitive ========================================================================

Remote KIO kompare in dolphin doesn't work

When using fish:// to connect to a remote file system in dolphin, selecting two files, then using context menu to "Compare files", kompare opens but no files are loaded to compare. It works as expected when on a local file system. Also clicking on a remote file and opening with kwrite, the file is loaded in kwrite and if changed, saving that loaded file changes the file on the remote host, as expected. So KIO seems to be working correctly. Note that comparing remote files worked before the upgrade to KDE 6 (Fedora 39). -- Evolution as taught in public schools is science. No faith required.

How to set icon size

I've noticed quite a lot missing since the upgrade to KDE 6. For example, in the system settings dialog there is no way to adjust the column widths. Virtually all of the items in the list are cropped, with an ellipsis to indicate truncation. If you click on Colors and Themes a new column is created and the same thing happens. No way to adjust the width and all items in the list are truncated. Another thing missing is anyway to adjust icon sizes. In the colors and themes section there used to be button at the bottom to set system icon sizes. Now you select only select an icon theme. I tried logging in with X11. That didn't fix anything. What am I missing? Emmett -- Evolution as taught in public schools is science. No faith required.

Fedora39: SDDM with NIS login accounts

Hi, I am just updating some systems from Fedora37 to Fedora39 using a fresh install but using old /home etc. Generally the systems are working, but I have a problem with SDDM and NIS logins. We use the simple NIS (YP) system for user accounts on our systems. If I try and use SDDM to login with one of these accounts, the greeter screen briefly disappears and appears again without any error message. This is with either a Plasma(X11) or Plasma(Wayland) session. A console/tty login with an NIS account is fine and using the kdm session manager is also fine, it just seems to be SDDM. Any ideas on how to debug this, there is no mention of where SDDM stores its logs by I assume in /var/log/messages ? Android emulator under Wayland

My Android emulators (under Android Studio if it makes a difference, but I think not since I'm getting the same problem running from the CLI) crash. The log suggests that the Wayland plugin isn't present, but I do have qt5 and qt6 Wayland libraries loaded. I've trawled around the net looking for answers but haven't found anything that works. Any fixes gratefully received Mark

Logout prompt default action

On Plasma 5, when I typed Ctrl-Alt-Del I would get a prompt where the default (preselected) action was Logout, and could just hit Return. Plasma 6.x, the default action is Shutdown. This is almost never what I want, and has caught me out more than once. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there a way to change it? poc
