iirc, Display Events pulls items from your default korganizer calendar. If you have no
such calendar or no items defined for the current month, seeing 'no effect' is
expected.

What I really want to do is turn the events off. I don't use kontact or any of its
siblings amd the boxes around the dates is just clutter to me.
I assume there is a bug since un-checking "Display events" has no effect.
