This is certainly true, but it's very unfortunate that anyone
using a
Gnome app under KDE (e.g. Evolution) also has to deal with the
completely separate gnome-keyring system. AFAIK kdewallet and
gnome-keyring do essentially the same thing but they don't
talk to each
other. It would be so much better to have a unified system
that
supported both APIs, but I guess that's never going to happen.

The last comment is over a year old, however there is a small amount of
mailing list activity (see
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/authentication). A cursory
glance at it gives me the impression what people are talking about a
complete rethink of what these apps actually do (the idea is to have a
new Secrets Service that any desktop app can tap into). This sounds nice
but I think we're going to have to be patient.
