Just tried it here on the POP3 account with a few folders and that works OK, trying it with IMAP Kmail complains:
"KMail was unable to fully detect a mailing list in this folder. Please fill in the addresses by hand."
Possibly this bug if your using IMAP:

Hmm ok thanks colin, I have actually had this work in the past and obviously all the headers for unsubscribe and post to list and help and stuff are present in the mails.

Works for me on disconnected IMAP. The detection is not really bulletproof, it only goes through first 5 emails in the folder it gets from Akonadi, trying to match familiar headers (List-Id, X-Mailing-List). I'm not sure whether it fetches headers from server if they are not cached in Akonadi, in that case the detection would fail. I'll check whether it's possible to request fetching the headers.

I'v managed to get it to work, by going into the folder and selecting the top mail, then scroll to bottom and shift+select the bottom mail (or select all)
then if I go into Folder->Mailing List Management then press detect automatically, it does fill in the fields successfully
