Please re-read. There are real security concern. On the other way, it should
be possible to create alternative screen lockers using QML; it's just that no
one worked on this yet, which is bad but I can understand the amount of
workload already handled by the developers.

There's a good reason why they're gone mainly because... well they
aren't really saving anything. Back in the days when everybody had TFT
monitors, screensavers would actually prevent the physical damage from
literally burning a still image into the monitor's matrix. These days
with the LCD displays, they are doing exactly the opposite - keep the PC
awake and in turn preventing it from entering a "sleep" state,
effectively wasting your power and battery.

The powersaving feature on any modern windowing environment can set a time for
the screen to go blank regardless if there is a screensaver on or not.
And what they save is what little bit of sanity I have left. lol
Believe me when I say that I am not inviting an argument. Nor am I trolling. I
am just blowing a little steam... One of the things that I find very
frustrating under Linux is that most software begins its "gold" phase with
half the features missing.
While the screensaver is not the most important feature on the computer, it
does provide some amusement on what would be otherwise an intense, highly
focused (to the point of obsessive compulsive) work day. It provides a small
brief moment of fun. Like I said... it may not save my screen. But it sure
helps preserve my sanity.

I get all that (and I remember the days of CRT burn), but I have news
for you: there's more to life than electricity. Some of those
screensavers are just gorgeous; it's an art form, like demos. I don't
care if it's called something else instead; I don't care what goes on in
the background to make it happen, but I want to be able to walk into my
lab and have those beautiful images take my breath away.

I like a screensaver to lock and hide my screen. Where I work, screen
locks are mandated. If I don't have one, I will be forced to use
Windows. It needs to be automatic and hide the information on the screen.
I read the Wikipedia article and it points to Security as a reason for
screensavers.
At home it keeps little kids from opening hundereds of tabs or windows
as one of my kids did when they were younger. I think the count was
about 272 windows in Firefox.
So they do serve a purpose. If not screensavers in F22/KDE, I guess I
won't be going to F22 until it is sorted out.

You can use xscreensaver if you like:
1) Install xscreensaver and any extra modules you want. This should give
you a "Screensaver" entry in System Settings; the command it runs is
"xscreensaver-demo", which opens the settings dialog.
2) In System Settings / Startup and Shutdown, click "Add Program" and
enter "xscreensaver -nosplash". This starts the screensaver daemon when
you log in.
3) Set a keyboard shortcut to transform your screen into a thing of beauty:
In System Settings, go to Shortcuts and click Custom Shortcuts.
Click the Edit button and select New -> Global Shortcut -> Command/URL.

those fancy animations (but only a blank screen with an unlocking dialog),
mainly because nobody developed such animations in a way compatible with the

QML) are already there, it just needs somebody to write the QML code.

Please, how was the present <F22 not locking the screen in a secure way
if you can share that information.
Will we still be able to start sessions in other terminals
(CTRL+ALT+F[*]) and startx? We use this at home instead of the "switch
user".

my F22 and found this thread which has all the info I needed (thanks
Glenn Holmer for the xscreensaver cheatsheet). I wanted to correct this
piece of misinformation, for the archive:

My secondary display is an LG L246WP - 1920x1280 MVA panel (not too
shabby) and it definitely burns if I forget to turn off the displays or
a screensaver isn't running. I'll come in the next day to find emacs
chrome burned into the screen (or the default KDE locker after I found
that). :/ My primary (IPS) panel doesn't seem to suffer from this effect.
The good news is that vigorously exercising the LCD elements through all
RGB states makes them respond again - the xscreensaver 'flurry' OpenGL
screensaver does a great job of this - I can have the screen back to
normal in about three hours. Not my idea - the use of flurry for this
purpose was written up elsewhere. It was non-trivial to this
information, though - many users might assume permanent hardware damage,
especially if they can remember real phosphor burn from back in the day.
I'm not sure how the chemistry works, but I am sure that screensavers
aren't obsolete on LCD panels, nor should they be considered
merely-aesthetic functionality in KDE. If DPMS signalling were reliable
under Linux the story might be different, but we've been waiting a
couple decades for that to happen and it's still not the situation we
have available to us.
