According to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427777 it should be possible to switch users from the KDE lock screen, however I don't seem to have this functionality.
Related question: is it possible to have two different DEs on different virtual consoles (if necessary with two distinct users)? For example, one with KDE and another with Gnome. I know this used to be possible in some previous iterations of KDE/Plasma, but there may be limitations due to SDDM.

Check back in the archives. (I only keep 14 days of emails)
This was covered and Switch User has been disabled due to its many problems. A way to enable was given but discouraged.

I've no idea. But just minor thinking about it makes me wonder if there wouldn't be conflicts in ownership of system hardware? Which DE/session owns the audio? Network interfaces?

I was under the impression that Gnome dealt with this, though I don't know the details. Why would running multiple DEs be any different from running multiple users? I can see how audio might be an issue, but network interfaces are designed to be shared.

I don't know about GNOME dealing with it. But if they have that doesn't change the fact that KDE/sddm hasn't done so successfully.
So, if this is a need why don't you switch to using gdm and then look into the same question from that angle.
I don't have a use case from switching users as our cats hardly demand computer time. And, if I want to run GNOME for some reason (or another DE) I'm content to do so in a VM.
While network interfaces are designed to be shared it doesn't mean harmony exists between users. Or that the secondary user is the same person. Secondary user comes home and without thinking fires up a VPN connection unaware they are disrupting a long file transfer.

I'll try gdm and see what happens.

I have a very specific use case which I doubt would be of much interest to most people. Certain Wine-based software (yes, games) runs well under Gnome but in KDE/Qt the whole login session can completely freeze at random times. To avoid this, I log out of KDE and into Gnome (both under X11) to run these apps, but this messes with my session settings every time, e.g. every tab I'm logged into under Chrome is reset (I assume something is moving cookies around), not to mention screen layout, window sizes etc. It's a major pain.
My plan is to do the Wine stuff as a completely separate user, but it would be nice to be able to switch back and forth without all the logging in and and out. Call me lazy.

It is (in theory) possible to separate users by means of network namespaces, and even run some transfers in a VPN while the rest are in the clear, even in the same user session. Not that I've ever managed to get this to work ...

I switch between users all the time, partly due to work requirements. I am still on Fedora 33 though. Won't be changing to 34 until this is working properly.
Note, due to switching users issues with sddm, I use gdm and have not had any of the switching users issues I had before.
As for the different DE's, I can only imagine that using VM's.

It should only be disabled with SDDM on F34. GDM works fine.

I've enabled GDM and rebooted, but I'm not seeing how to select which desktop to use. Apparently I'm supposed to see a gear icon on the login screen, but it's not there and I can only log into Gnome.

It isn't way down in the right corner? You may have to select the password box first.

I mean "select the user" first.

I see it now. However I was hoping to use this to allow two different users each to have their own DE and switch between them. That doesn't appear to be possible as the gear icon only appears on the initial login screen, not on the Switch User screen.
Looks like logging out and in again is the only option.

Belay that last remark. I forgot to select the alternate user in order to see the gear icon on the Switch screen. I've now succeeded in running two different DEs on two virtual consoles.

OK....
You will also find that there will be no gear if the 2nd user is already "active".

Indeed. The only hiccup is that I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Fn to switch away from KDE, but so far it seems to work.
