Is anybody using KMail2, or has everyone given up on it?
I've asked several questions about it, eg I cannot create top-level folders, there are curious sub-folders created when migrating from KMail, the Tools=>Find Messages facility does not seem to work.
I just wondered if the reason I haven't had any responses is that everyone has gone back to the previous version of KMail?

Sadly... I'm still using it :-\

The find message works at least for me. Not as fast as I want, but it works.
The sub-folders thing happened to me also, but once I gave up with the migration I just started to do the config process all over again.
Right now, besides the infamous and dissapointing issue with the latency to load imap folders (it's very frustating to move to one folder and wait for minutes to just see what's new in it) I'm experiencing shortcuts problems. ie, using the next unread message or move to next/previous message shortcuts works only 1 out of 5 times.
I have been using kontact and kmail for the last 10~12 years with the former RedHat and now Fedora, and this is the first time that i'm considering to leave it for thunderbird.

Thanks for your response. It seems I'm not alone in feeling frustrated with KMail2!
Re the Tools=>Find Messages facility, I found it started working after re-starting Nepomuk/Strigi.
But it seems only to search through all KMail folders, which in my case is tens if not hundreds of thousands of messages.
My recollection is that under KMail-1, if you highlighted a folder then only this folder was searched. Am I mistaken about that?

I moved to Thunderbird after months of trying to straighten out the mess. I've found that with a few add-ons, I've been able to duplicate most of the functionality I liked about KMail...

Moved to gmail :(. Not as convenient or feature-full, but I found great new sources of cheap Viagra!

I can only add a "metoo". I can create a subfolder no problem, but I confirm that top-level doesn't work.
there are curious sub-folders created when migrating from KMail,
Back when I migrated my mail it somehow did work, and I haven't tried since. Although I remember I had some trouble finding out precisely *how* to migrate, ie. how to change the default local mail folder.
the Tools=>Find Messages facility does not seem to work.
Metoo. But I rarely use the search, if ever. When I need it, I open a terminal, and do a
grep -r searchphrase ~/mymail
:-)
I just wondered if the reason I haven't had any responses
Maybe nobody has anything helpful to say? ;-)
As for myself, note that my usage of mail client is quite simplistic with well-organized mail subfolders, so I rarely need to create a top-level maildir, or perform searches. I didn't know these problems existed until I saw your post and tested.
is that everyone has gone back to the previous version of KMail?
Is that even possible?! Anyway, no, I'm waiting for KDE4.8 to arrive to F16 stable --- that has a fix for the "not filtering sent mail" bug, which is basically the only thing bugging me with KMail2. Hopefully some of the bugs you mentioned are also fixed.
AFAIK, most KMail2 bugs and terrible functionality regressions came about when the actual control over the e-mail storage was delegated to akonadi. Back when the old KMail was handling mail storage on its own, everything was smooth, fast and Just Worked. But since akonadi took control over e-mail storage...
...I see duplicate new messages all over the place --- when I click on the first, something wakes up in the background and the second copy disappears after a few seconds (but not always)...
...there are "ghost" e-mails --- the number of unread messages next to some folders reports 1 or 2 unread messages, but there aren't any inside...
...search doesn't work...
...often it is necessary to "update folder" from the folder's popup menu (whatever that updating means) or otherwise some messages get lost in the "limbo" somewhere and don't get listed inside a directory...
...during the (POP3) download of e-mails from the server, messages get into the inbox, then get automatically filtered to various subfolders, then get back into inbox again and finally get filtered into subfolders once more, before settling down --- the whole process takes several seconds of shuffling messages back and forth, with intensive cpu activity...
...deleting a message from a folder takes a whole second to complete, and cpu spikes during that time...
...and so on... ;-)
All in all, IMHO the move to akonadi was a Bad Idea --- I have a feeling that KMail2 itself is not responsible for any of the above issues. Rather, akonadi seems to be handling e-mail in a very unoptimized way. The old KMail handled all this on its own, in a much better, cleaner and faster way. But due to someone's idea of "integration of e-mail with the rest of KDE", all mail handling has been moved to an akonadi database --- a "cannon to kill a fly" scenario. I see no practical benefit, while functionality has been degraded several times over.
But I can live with it, for now. I'm too used to KMail's user interface, and migrating to another client is not worth the time to relearn&customize it to my preference.
Waiting for 4.8 and hoping for the best... :-)
HTH, :-) Marko
I have to say "metoo"
I have all these problems and one more Automatic filtering incoming mails doesn't work at all, I have to select new messages and apply filters manually.
And the migration process has been terrible.

I've given up on it, but only temporarily (I hope). I didn't try the migration process - just imported my old emails into KMail2. I had problems with the message viewing being very slow (I think because of the nepomuk feeder, but I'm not really sure). I also had problems with emails magically re-appearing in my inbox after I had moved them to another folder. I don't think I even tried filtering the inbound messages - I got frustrated with basic email processing not working right. Maybe there was something I could have done to fix some of the problems, but I had trouble finding the fixes.
I'll probably try it again at 4.8.2 or so. I'd like to use KMail, but I don't want the new features that aren't quite working right to get in the way of the basic things I need to do.

I'am searching the internet for a solution. KMail crashes always after deletion of some mails . It varies between 5 to 12 mails an then KMail crashes. I saw a lot of people experiencing the same problem , with log crash reports but until now I didn't see any solution and strong silence from the developers. I'm running Fedora 16 with the latest updates. In principle the KMail is a disaster now. Alternatives : thats te problem . There is no simple nice solution to convert the KMail archives to another system. You have to pick up the mail-folders en sub-folders at low level in the .local tree and import one by one in evolution for example . Thunderbird probably the same issue If I convert my whole mail system to evolution I guess it will take 2 full days. Writing / testing scripts and the conversion also 2-3 days. Simply at this moment working with KMail is a disaster.
Waiting for someone with a smart solution .
If you got a solution please notify me.

I abandoned Kmail many years ago (and that was version 1), so I may be mistaken, but can't you export your folders to an IMAP server and then access them from another client, e.g. Evolution, TBird or whatever?

Does your KMail never crash? Can you search through a folder with the Tools=>Find Messages facility? Did you meet any problems upgrading from KMail1 ?
