I have 2 monitors (laptop + external). If I close laptop lid, system will sleep. Now disconnect hdmi to monitor. Now open lid. lock screen is displayed.
But there is no way to enter the password. I can move mouse around. Caplock is responded to. But I can't enter any characters into the password field.
Only thing I can do is switch to VT, and do systemctl restart sddm.

Sounds like the infamous plasmashell lockup. Since the screen was reconfigured while blanked, something got stuck. All I can say is to disconnect the HDMI cable before you close the laptop lid. Until this bug gets fixed (or even found), all we can do is work around the issues.
My latest glitch is that it won't turn the backlight back on after it has powered it off - VTs work just fine, but the primary display where SDDM and plasmashell are running stay blank.

I did disconnect before sleeping - that doesn't help :(
The only workaround for now is turn off lock screen on wakeup.

As a workaround you can try to kill kscreenlocker_greet process. The greeter will automatically by restarted by ksmserver and you should be able to unlock your session then.
Cheers, Dan

It seems screen hotplug is really broken in Qt5. I hope Qt5.5.0 will help, we already have a backport of some patches from QTBUG-42985, but not exactly what has been integrated in Qt5 (at least the "Primary screen removed, expect trouble" trace I see isn't in Qt5.5.0)
I'm using an external monitor configured as primary display with my laptop, and I have many issues when I unplug it.
After locking the screen, then unplugging the monitor, the screen locker isn't displayed correctly (the top of the screen is white, the rest is gray). If I kill kscreenlocker_greeter, another instance is restarted and I can type my password and unlock.
After unplugging the monitor, many running applications which were displayed on it have issues : - scrolling only updates the top/bottom lines in Konsole, QtCreator, ktp-text-ui (but Kate doesn't seem to be affected) - in at least Kate and QtCreator, the mouse cursor doesn't change any more (so I see the normal cursor, even when it is over a text widget), and the menu bar doesn't react to mouseover events (the menu is only highlighted when it is open, and it stays highlighted after being closed) - krunner isn't always centered - sometimes the panel at the bottom of the screen disappears (fixed by restarting plasma-desktop)
I saw a few other issues at least once when testing : - windows maximize below the bottom panel, even for newly started applications - wallpaper missing on one screen
