Has anyone noticed that for a bout a week mouse clicks are almost impossible? Sometimes a single click opens a program twice, sometimes a single click will not tick/untick a button until it is done 4 or 5 times, sometimes it is almost impossible to drop down a drop-down menu with a mouse click, etc.

No, not a single problem here. Time to clean your mouse? Change the batteries?

No batteries, cable. Seems fine.
Uses a little red light to read. Seems fine.
Maybe it's acting up? I don't think so, but could be. No way to know.
You mean you don't have 3 or 4 mice hidden in a drawer somewhere? I even have a non-optical mouse from years ago. :-)

OK, I do have one mouse in a drawer :-) I bought it the very same day as this one (a couple of years ago). This one is USB and the other is PS/2. That's the only difference. I had bought it, because the old motherboard on my desktop computer had a PS/2 jack. I do have an adaptor, so I could try it on this computer (I changed the motherboard about 18 months ago), so there is only USB now.

A bit OT, but I have a drawer full of PS/2 mice. I tried a cheapo PS/2 to USB adaptor some time ago, but it didn't seem to work. I was told at my local electronic store that I needed a PS/2 to USB _converter_, which costs several times as much as a mouse ...
More seriously, my favourite HP LaserJet 5L with a Centronics connector has been idle for a couple of years, since the last machine with a Centronics socket went to the computer graveyard. I've often wondered if a simple Centronics to USB adaptor could work?

converter is correct.

an HP LaserJet 5L uses a centronics _type_ connector, but it uses a different communication standard then what centronics is.
it uses ieee 1284, a bi-directional parallel communications and requires higher quality and shorter length cables than centronics. see;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1284
if you wish to put the HP LaserJet 5L back in service, do not use a centronics/usb adapter. get an ieee 1284 card.

welcome.

if you go with ebay, be sure you get a warranty.
before committing to an ebay purchase, i would check NewEgg and other such that may have a good price and not have shipping charge.
also, insure that you can return card in case linux does recognize card.
you should be able to use 'hplib' drivers. hp has very good linux drivers and may well have what you need for an 'aged' printer.
No problems here. Have you verified that the mouse itself is not the problem?

Happens here too for about a week. I thought my mouse was dirty or dying. Interesting to see someone else having the same problem in the same time frame.

When I said "impossible to use" it was an exaggeration, but...
In Kmail, for example, I view emails in the preview pane, I click on the email header to open it in the preview pane and quite often, it will now also open a new window with the email displayed.
Sometimes, when I click the 'f' menu icon on the taskbar, the menu will rapidly open and close, even though I clicked only once.
When I use firefox and go to youtube to access the youtube dropdown menu on the upper right, I have to press it many times before it will open.
When using google reader, to display an article when in header mode requires multiple clicks to get it to open.
When using k3b for ripping some tracks from a CD, trying to tick/untick some songs is almost impossible: the remain ticked despite numerous clicks, and it appears like the check-mark image is rapidly flashing, as if a single mouse click is actually registering numerous times.
I don't think it is my mouse. The problem has been getting worse for the last week or a bit longer. I think that mouse clicks, sometimes, are read multiple times so that the actions are duplicated or are done and immediately undone again.
This is what I meant by "impossible to use".

altho current thru switch contacts is very low, thru the years of use, contacts will become dirty. this does not make good conduction and can cause problems as you are having.

-=-
"getting worse" could indicate that it is in the mouse and caused by mechanical failure of the switch/switches. or cable.

'double click interval' time can be changed in your mouse configuration settings.
This is what I meant by "impossible to use".

then stop using problem mouse and try another mouse as already suggested.
in early days of mice, a 'micro switch' type switch was used. in time, many mouse makers have moved to less expensive switches. many of which do not have long actuation life.
a more common problem with 'wired' mice is where wire cable enters housing and is clamped by some poor type of binding.
this can be checked by opening a program window with buttons and moving pointer to button. then, holding offending button down on button and wiggling and twisting cable. if button remains highlighted, cable may be good. if it flashes, then you can presume it is cable.
years ago, i got tired of keeping an area cleared on desk to move mouse around on [and other reasons] and bought a logitech thumb marble mouse. from that day forward, 'mousing' has been nothing but pure pleasure.
long story short, 'bite the bullet', try another mouse.
hth.

you will not regret it when you do.
i have the "trackman marble", m/n t-ch11, p/n 804122-3000. no scroll wheel.
it has been replaced with "trackman wheel", t-bb18;
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/429/166
there is also a 'cordless' model, t-ra18;
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/429/159
i have had the t-bb18 for over 25 years. in that time, i have had numerous friends and several clients try it. they have bought them, both corded and cordless. all are happy.
a couple friends bought the microsoft 'imitation'. no go. they returned them and bought the logitech. ;)
do note that the 'thumb marble' does collect dust/crud, just like a standard mouse marble. this can be cleaned by removing 'marble' and cleaning the three small bearing point with a small firm bristle brush.
so, have you tried a different mouse yet?

Thanks for all the info. A local shop sells only:
Logitech Trackman Marble Trackball (wired), ambidexterous, but no wheel $40 Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball Mouse (wireless), for right hand, I guess, with wheel $65
I am right-handed, but have used the mouse in my left hand for almost 10 years to keep my right free for a pen/pencil.
I could see what some other shops have.
so, have you tried a different mouse yet?
Yeah. I just plugged in the ps/2 mouse with the usb adaptor and there are no problems. I really didn't believe that the other mouse was wearing out, but this is the proof.

If you're fond of the old one, and have less likable devices around, you might try switch replacement. I've had to do that with my Marble F/X, since nothing close to its perfection has ever been made since, and used ones are insanely priced on eBay. You might be surprised to find switches from a $2 mouse fit just right and work the same as those from high priced models.
Before bothering trying to replace, you might want to hit the switches with compressed gas and/or contact cleaner.

I just read that the software only works with Windows and Apple. I never use included software and things work in Fedora like I expect them to. Does this mouse work in Fedora? I guess so, since you must be using it :-)

there are a lot of 'bells and whistles' in the apple and oos software. none of which is needed for linux.

I don't notice it. But then I am using touchpad, not mouse (F16, fully updated).

It happened to me a couple of weeks back. I thought its a Fedora problem, but when I used it on a Windows system, it was the same behaviour. Now I have changed my mouse. But its such a coincidence that all of your problems were mine as well. :)
