folks have repeatedly asked about newer/featureful kde builds for rhel6 over the years, and I've put off mostly due to lack of interest and time... until yesterday.
Making some good progress, so our mostly empty rhel6 kde-testing repo should see some significant content showing up over the next week or so. Warning: It'll be rough initially, we're at the "it builds! ship it..." stages, so copious testing and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
My strategy so far is to minimize upgrading core el6 packages as much as reasonably possible. We'll see how far that takes us.

OMG! I was just searching the net for newer KDE on RHEL 6 and then I checked my mail and here you are.. Thanks a lot Rex.. And that too 4.10?? Yippeee!
We've been using RHEL 5 for some time now and today in one meeting we kind of decided to switch to RHEL 6 for all new projects. I was a bit worried because of the ancient KDE version in RHEL6.
If you release the RPMs, I'd be more than happy to help in testing.
Thanks and regards,
Syam

OK, first pass stuff ready for initial public testing and comment.
Included so far: qt-4.8.4 kde-4.10.1 amarok-2.7.0 calligra-2.6.2 digikam-3.1.0 (includes kipi-plugins) konversation-1.4
and available from kde-unstable repo for el6. Just plop http://kdeforge.unl.edu/apt/kde-redhat/epel/kde.repo into /etc/yum.repos.d/ and enable kde-testing and kde-unstable repos
Requires one enable EPEL-6: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL
Optional addons available from: http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration
KNOWN ISSUES ------------ * solid HAL backend not used by default One known issue is that kde will not use it's solid HAL backend until you manually define environment variable SOLID_HAL_LEGACY. I tested adding a snippet ~/.kde/env/SOLID_HAL_LEGACY.sh containing: SOLID_HAL_LEGACY=1; export SOLID_HAL_LEGACY I may address this to set that automatically somehow.

Thanks for compiling these packages, Rex! I'm using them on my machine. I have 3 questions: 1) Are you planning to build packages for the more recent KDE 4.10 bugfix releases? I like to use the .4 or .5 releases if I can, since they've had the most time for bug-fixing. 2) Would you be able to post your source rpms online as well? I didn't find them when I browsed the repository online, but if I had them I might build some of the more recent 4.10 code. 3) Is there any way to let people help build more recent releases, if it's too much for you to do by yourself?
Thanks again, -Ben

Yes, as time allows.

Yeah, I suck. :(
Well, here's what I've got so far, http://kdeforge.unl.edu/apt/kde-redhat/mock/srpms-el6/
I'll make sure to provide a proper source repo on the next iterations of these builds.

Good question. Maybe someday if we could move to some sort of shared infrastructure, like http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:Copr or rpmfusion.org or whatever.

No, you certainly do not! Your packages are awesome and a life saviour for me and some of my colleagues every day :) Keep up the good work!

Rex - I'd like to help as well. I think a shared resource of some kind would definitely be the way to go. I'd like to be able to offer our users here a EL6 platform with KDE 4, but I don't want to do it if support for it might disappear. Being part of that support would help :).
Also, any plans for migrating these from "unstable"?

Yes, once I get a little more feedback about how it is working for folks using it, good or bad. hint hint :)

Rex: I've been using kde-unstable on my SL i686 laptop pretty much since you made it available. I can't say I've explored its features, and the laptop isn't in continuous use; but I've found it much more stable and user friendly than what I had before, which was, as far as I was aware, the standard distribution. Thanks a lot.
I've mentioned my use of kde-unstable, and kernel-lt from elrepo, in several posts on the ATrpms-users, rpmfusion, MythTV and SL lists. I guess it would be good to lose the 'unstable' tag. Most el6-clone users are hoping for stability :-)
Maybe I can mention, in passing, that the mouse on my F17 box has developed twitchy and unpredictable behaviour over the last few weeks; window switching and text selection often need several attempts before they come right. I expect I'll be moving on to F18 soon, though, so it's not going to get much attention.
But yes, I like your 'unstable' el6 packages.

I'll be happy to contribute some infrastructure as well, builder, web host, etc.

I'll try to get you some soon. In the meantime, could the following packages be added:
libreoffice-kde kredentials kbibtex rsibreak
Thanks!

So far we have set it up on two workstations, both are in daily use, and has been since you set the packages up. A main driver for getting it installed was trying to get Kontact working with Exchange, so far that has not been very successful as you know. However, Kdevelop was also very important for users wanting an integrated environment for C++, and has been a success. Applications I would like to take advantage of includes Kile and Digikam. The packages have proven very stable, these machines typically goes months without reboot. The main obstacle for rolling it out on more machines is that Red Hat 5 is still the main install, so few users are on Red Hat 6, but we will probably upgrade one or two more machines after summer vacation.
Cheers, Alf
