When I start kmail, kwallet opens, but I am asked for the passwords for all of the stored pop3 servers anyway, then after entering them (even though they are already in kwallet), a new window opens stating that akonadi is not running as root and that there are errors in the mysql log (I cannot find that log: /var/log/mysqld.log is completely empty) and when I then click that window closed, kmail also closes, with the result that I am unable to download/read my emails.
I should add that knode works, and it also accesses the same pop3 servers in order to send mail.
Oh, it must store the passwords elsewhere, because it doesn't use kwallet.

I'm seeing something very similar on this F14 box + a few other minors things I am looking into.

When that happens I close kontact/kmail and starting it again fixes the problem.
There is also a kwallet warning saying that some application (I am not sure if it specifically refers kmail) went rogue and are doing multiple connection and informing us that this is a suspect activity.

Seeing this sometimes also, nothing found yet on kde.bugs, I'll try and make a note of the warning next time.

Sort of related but not the cause:
