Ctl-Atl-F8, followed by Alt-F1..Alt-Fn to switch to virtual
terminal 'n'.
Ctl-Alt-F7 gets you back to X

You probably are missing whatever the xsession is trying to run. If you
switch to a tty and check ~/.xsession-errors, you'll probably see
something more enlightening
