I can do some of this - I've never hacked Java, Scala, or any of these
other fancy things you speak of :). I'm obviously quite experienced
in Fedora however, and can help the newbies get setup and going
relatively quickly - and being physically present helps in doing that
immensely.
My main point in being there is having someone from infrastructure
there, along those lines, have you filled out an RFR for an EP
instance yet?

Re: Etherpad FAD preparation
by Colin Zwiebel
Okay, non-rooming info.
Just had a good meeting with Andy, Kevin, and got Mel on the cam. We had a
lot of discussion, here are the brilliant insights of our toils:
* We need to have social activities, adding OWW to Friday, and some other
event Sunday (free form?)
* Would also be good to
== What people will do ==
As requested in the earlier Mel-message. I drafted out details for a sheet
that gets everyone on the same page and informs what they should do and who
to get in touch with. It isn't complete but that is okay because the purpose
of the pre-FAD is to fill these details in:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD#Resources
Big things missing:
* Detailed work breakdown
* How to get started hacking
Tentative thoughts:
* (Beginner task) Have new people go through GitHub and Google Code tickets,
check current state, triage
== Getting People Up to Speed ==
We've been planning on an intro to OSS and techs involved in this hackathon.
Kevin Mehall has graciously agreed. This will cover:
- what's open source
- what's Linux/Fedora
- what's packaging
- what's version control (here's how you use the one we're using over the
weekend - which is to say, git)
- Using SVN (as a started)
- How to use SVN mastery to learn Git
- what's the software development lifecycle (release cycles, the role of
QA, etc)
- What are patches and diffs and how do I use them
- How do changes get pulled into Open Source projects
- What is this forking business
We're also considering having Sebastian give a 7-min talk he gave a week
earlier at Olin.
== HelpDesk / Point Person ==
At any time we will have a point-person for outside contact and "help, I
don't know what to do" requests. Mel offered to do a training. Colin, Andy,
and Kevin(?) were interested in hearing what Mel has to say.
MEL ATTENTION NEEDED
Mel, can you send out a WhenIsGood or similar for times that make you happy.
We will assume them to be in Eastern time.
YOUR ATTENTION NEEDED
And we need people to act as helpdesk. This may be a good position for
technical people not versed in the exact EP technolgoies (IE me, never
hacked in scala in my life)
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD#Help_Desk_Hours
== Pre-FAD ==
Already mentioned, but specific task creation will happen during Pre-FAD as
we will our European (UK) co-hackers there to consult. If you are technical
and can help outline, would love to have your help.

on
Oct 2nd ( check local
time<http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=10&day=2&year=...>
)
== Logistics ==
Not any assignments on the logistics front (feel free to volunteer). I'm
just going to list everything I can think of so we don't miss any task:
* Pickup guests
* Get admissions room keys
* Clean admissions sheets
* Food
* Choose stir-fry supplies
* Buy stir-fry supplies
* Choose drink/snacks
* Buy drinks/snacks
* Find dedicated computers for video chat / testing
* Lug and setup dedicated computers
* Find many power strips for the hacking
* Flyer the entirety of Olin
* Talk up the event to friends
== Grouping of EP components ==
Andy would love to have an EtherPad library/framework/API/app to help people
make 1) other collaborative tools and 2) turn anything web-text into instant
collaboration. This is idealistic, but we think there a couple of modules of
Etherpad that could/should be separated:
[module 1] Core
* Comparison (operational transformation?)
* Document history (and timeslider)
* Pad identification (by URL, or other)
* Database and storage
[module 2] Web stuff
* Interface
* Pro functionality (login, password protection)
* Chat
IDEA
== Pairing ==
Andy has the great idea of pairing people off. Probably inexperienced with
experienced. Will help people learn and have something to do at all times.
I'm planning on doing this during / right after introductions.

Re: Etherpad FAD preparation
by Mel Chua
(Now sending from the right email address so I can actually post to
logistics...)
For people new to this conversation - the context is that a team at Olin
College is preparing for the Etherpad FAD (an activity day dedicated to
getting Etherpad deployed within Fedora, which implies building up a lot
of software engineering infrastructure and possibly hacking its code
along the way; it's close to abandonware at the moment) and I'm helping
them make sure they're ready for the event, because it includes an
unusually high percentage and large number of brand-new FOSS
contributors who'll need a lot of scaffolding and guidance.
Ccing the logistics list because this may make a useful way to think
about preparing for FADs in the future - Fedora people, see the link at
the end of this email. Also Ccing TOS, because I'm curious if this is a
useful way to think about preparing hackathons for students and vice versa.
--
All right, folks (meaning the Olin team). You have homework to do before
our meeting.
Make these things as best you can. I've tried to spec in deliverables as
best I could, and explain the results I'm trying to accomplish by each
one (if you can think of an alternative thing that accomplishes the same
results, feel free to do that instead!)
You should ''finish'' these, but not ''polish'' them (get all the
content in, but don't worry about typesetting or putting stuff in a
shiny pdf yet). You should try to complete them, but also know they
won't be done before our meeting - they won't be final, they'll still
need tweaking. Think of it as bringing your complete first draft in for
review. We'll spend our conversation time hacking on the rest of this
and making sure things are clear to you on how to get them the rest of
the way ready before the event.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD#Resources
If you can send me links to the completed resources (you can make them
right in there on the wiki page) at least an hour before our meeting
time, that would be excellent, because then I'll have a chance to review
them and queue up commentary ahead of time, and we'll be able to get a
lot more done during our actual call.
Feel free to send questions about this stuff at any time, and to push
back if things don't make sense or if I'm being an overbearing dictator.
:) These are all suggestions you can choose whether or not to take - I
won't be offended if you think you've come up with a better way to do
things (heck, I'll want to learn!) I'm here to help you make the FAD the
kickass success you want it to be, so *you* tell me how I can help
you... this is just my initial offer.
Send me a ping letting me know you've read this message and whether the
instructions in the "Resources" page make sense - enough for you to
start working on it, at least.

Flexifilter and FWN
by Paul W. Frields
I started experimenting with the Flexifilter module:
http://drupal.org/project/flexifilter
It allows parsing of different kinds of text to render as HTML content
in a Drupal page. (There was an earlier version of this module that
used PEAR parsing routines, whose page recommends Flexifilter
instead.)
There's a test page here:
http://publictest4.fedoraproject.org/drupal/node/11
Last night I wrote some customization for handling <ref> tags, but
it's not complete. I just wanted to see how hard it was to create a
new handler. Some things are frighteningly easy, like headings. Some
are a little more difficult -- not in concept, just in using the web
interface to create them! Fortunately there's a way to write the
filter in code and then import it.
The point of doing this is that it would make people's lives very easy
if they could just paste in wiki text and have it Just Work(tm). I'm
going to continue working on this in light of the work session Pascal
and I had yesterday. The process for entering an FWN issue is pretty
simple, and this would shave off an extra portion of time that
otherwise the editor would have to spend tweaking the markup.
Pascal, are you willing to locate any FWN workflow writeup you did
earlier, and tweak it to match what we did yesterday?
