Fedora 8: Live CD Reviewed
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
Interesting perspective on Codeina esp considering the recent ongoing
thread in fedora-devel list on the same topic.
Digg This:

"Codec Buddy certainly makes installing restricted codecs a breeze. One
thing that it does better than Ubuntu is the reality jolt it provides
users with regards to perceived legalities of certain codecs in some
regions."
"Like Ubuntu's codec installer, it warns about perceived legalities in
some regions, but Fedora backs it up by asking you to pay for some of
the codecs via Fluendo's Web store - very classy. Not only does this
promote using free codecs, but it adds a little reminder that OS X and
Windows pay these fees with the OS, so how can Linux users expect this
to be different?"

Website Team Meetings
by Ricky Zhou
(Cross-posted to the websites and marketing lists)
Hi!
I notice that we used to have Websites team meetings a long time ago,
but they were suspended. At this point, we should be in a good position
to start further expanding and defining our website, as we've seen in
discussion on the websites and marketing lists. However, we still have
a lot of design, content, and technical issues that need to be addressed
before we can really move forward.
With that said, this looks like a good time to setup a meeting time for
everybody to discuss and participate in making these decisions. What
would be a good time for everybody to meet on IRC? I should probably be
good for most of Wednesday and Friday evenings or any time over the
weekend).
Right now, here are some items that we want to talk about:
* Website purposes/targets
* Expanding beyond our current content/design
* Improving our handling of translations
* Getting more people involved :)

Generic Fedora Poster Designs for Events
by Máirín Duffy
Hi,
Joerg Simon pointed out to me the need for generic (e.g., not specific
to any release or event) and re-usable poster designs for event booths.
I took a stab at a 3-poster series. They are simple designs but maybe
they would be catchy for an event booth. The palette could definitely
use tweaking, I am sure there are 3 colors that would work better. I
think the text is pretty hokey too. Actually, I think as I went along
each poster's gets hokier and hokier ;-) Anyhow, here they are:
http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/fedora-poster-designs.png (svg in
same dir)
I think the general layout and approach (1) one fedora idea/principle
(2) short explanation of what it means for Fedora (3) nice shiny Fedora
logo could be a good one for the purpose. I think the repetition of
three similar (but slightly different) posters in the booth would also
look slick. I designed these posters with the idea that they could be
roughly 36" x 24". (Standard US poster size, but could easily be tweaked
for other specific standard sizes near that ratio.)

Vote for Fedora 9 in 2008!!!
by Markus McLaughlin
This idea just came to me, it is 2008, it is an election year in USA! As
soon as Fedora 9 is released, I think it is time to have a POLL of which
Linux OS you would vote for as the best! I see Ubuntu as Hillary Clinton
and Fedora as Barack Obama, both wanting to be the best! If there was an OS
that runs like a Republican would, I think it would be PCLinuxOS or
openSUSE. Let's do a POLL on the day Fedora 9 comes out and let's see if we
can't get more votes than Ubuntu!!!
VOTE FOR FEDORA 9 IN 2008!!!

Store SIG Update - a.k.a. State of the SIG
by Jeffrey Tadlock
It is time for a Fedora Store SIG update! To bring people up to
speed, the Fedora Store SIG was founded by Max Spevack as a means to
solve two major issues - provide an easy way for Fedora users and
contributors to obtain Fedora merchandise and help direct Fedora
Ambassadors to vendors that are near them who can help fill bulk
orders for events they attend. More details can be found on the
Fedora SIG page [1].
We have made progress, though it has been slow going. With the past
two meetings being canceled due to lack of attendance I felt it was
time to provide a summary of where we are at today and what last
things we need to wrap up in order to move forward.
Let's start with some of the things we have accomplished so far. We
now have an AmbassadorVendors page [2] in the wiki to help Fedora
ambassadors locate a vendor in their area to place bulk orders for
T-shirts and such from. Ambassadors are welcome to continue adding to
this page as they work with vendors in their area and have a good
experience.
We have also created a potential vendors list page [3] for a
distributor/online store to center discussion on who to use for
providing merchandise to Fedora users and contributors in smaller
quantities. This page includes pros and cons the group has come up
with for each potential vendor.
And finally, we have created a rather long list of potential items [4]
people would like to see. Obviously we cannot use all of them out of
the gate, but we certainly have a wide array of items that people have
express interest in with the Fedora logo emblazoned on.
So, what's left? We need to decide on a vendor. The front runners at
this point seem to be www.cafepress.com and www.spreadshirt.com. We
really need more input on this aspect though. The pros and cons are
listed on our potential vendors page.
Initially I was leaning towards spreadshirt.com, but as time has gone
on I am now leaning more towards cafepress.com. The basis for this is
from a recent discussion regarding posters on the Marketing and
Ambassadors list. Mairin Duffy worked up some great Fedora posters
[5] and discussion quickly turned to making them available for
purchase. If the store was hosted on spreadshirt.com, the option
really isn't there. With cafepress.com we could easily upload the
graphics and have the posters ready for sale. This is a major selling
point to cafepress.com to me. But we need more opinions.
The other item the Store SIG could use some help with is a mockup of a
potential store.fedoraproject.org page. We have outlined some general
requirements [6] on the wiki. I have also submitted requests to the
Art Team's mailing list and to the Websites team Page Request page
[7]. A mockup would really help pull things together for the concept
we have in mind.
That's where we stand. If you have comments on cafepress.com versus
spreadshirt.com, please post them to the mailing list, add comments to
my blog or update the wiki page. If you can help with a mockup of a
store.fp.o page, please volunteer and let me know.
Thanks!
Jeffrey

Fedora Project releases alpha version of Fedora 9 Linux distribution
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/103066
"The GNOME programs in the alpha version of Fedora 9 are derived from
the 2.21 development branch from which GNOME 2.22 should be emerging in
mid March. The browser will be a preview version of Firefox 3, the core
rendering elements of which are in a separate XULRunner package. Preview
versions of other applications such as OpenOffice 2.4 or X-Server 1.5
are also used. The development team have also improved the installation
program so that existing ext2, ext3 and NTFS partitions can now be
reduced in size. In addition, it is now possible to create encrypted
Linux partitions directly during installation."
