Help getting the word out about Summer of Code 2009
by Karsten Wade
Google has decided to return with their Summer of Code program for
2009. We can expect the program to be a bit smaller in size, making
the student competition part more important. When we have an influx
of great students and ideas, our mentors can collaborate to make very
strong proposals. Strong proposals get us the most student slots.
This last year we did a modest increase in our noisiness (marketing)
about the Summer of Code. The results were pretty good[1]. Compared
to 2007, our best year to that point, we had three times the number of
mentors step forward, three times the proposals, and more than twice
the number of student slots.
Imagine how it could be if more people than just me were promoting
Fedora and JBoss.org's presence in the Summer of Code?
Do you have any interest in:
* Planning a Summer of Code promotion for Fedora/JBoss.org
* Running the promotion
You may wonder, why JBoss.org? Mainly that I don't think Google is going
to separate the organizations this year; with slim participation
available, they are going to be looking for any ways to consolidate
further. I don't know who from JBoss.org is interested in planning
and promoting this. However, the situation makes us dependent on each
other and the quality of projects. Fortunately, this situation worked
out rather well last year.

Re: [Ambassadors] Re: Fedora 11: What do we expect?
by Angel
When did I say, we have to include close source software with Fedora? I
didn´t say it. All I just wish, easiest way of the solutions of this issues.
So more people will start using Fedora.
I am using Fedora from the beginning of the Fedora Core. Everything is easy
for me. But think about a Windows User, who wants to switch to Linux, can
you please tell me, why he will use Fedora instead of Ubuntu? In Ubuntu he
can easily enable the close source repo, he can easily install all kind of
multimedia software, he can easily install nvidia/ati driver. He can do this
thing graphically, and anyone can easily do it. But in case of Fedora, he
need to googleing to install close source software, as well as, codecs and
other drivers. Now tell me, why he will use Fedora instead of Ubuntu, as
Ubuntu is also an Open Source and Linux Operating System? Why? Because of
free and freedom? Nop. Ubuntu is also free. They also don´t include close
source software, but it´s very easier to enable close source. Now, if there
is some other reason (please explain, i dont know) you can say, why they
should use Fedora instead of Ubuntu, then I´ll say, users doesn´t care about
those reasons at all. Prove is, Ubuntu is now most popular Linux OS.
Now, if you tell me, Fedora is not for new users, then my apologies for
opening this thread. I have nothing to say. I´ll change my strategy to
promoting Fedora (I´ll encouarage only advanced Linux users to try Fedora,
not a new user).
At last, I just want to know, can anyone please tell me, why did I open this
thread? I am giving the answer, it´s so simple, because I love Fedora, I
want to promote Fedora in wider public of the world. And I want to see,
other people is using Fedora. But amximum of yours impression is, I want to
break Fedora´s goal. Please, open your mind. Try to understand. I have my
study, I have my work. I don´t have any reasons to arguing with you.

groupware backends in fedora
by Jonas Karlsson
Hello,
I'm looking at different groupware backends and also searching the
fedora repos for groupware backends. What is the future plan to include
in Fedora? After searching the web for a while I come across Kolab and
when comparing it to other alternatives it really looks like it could be
useful, it also integrates with horde that's already present in fedora.
Has there been any discussion about starting with Kolab rpm's in the
Fedora distribution? On Kolab's website the last entry is for Fedora 6.
doing a yum search today on groupware gives nothing

Fedora 11: What do we expect?
by Angel
Hi,
It´s almost one year, I am with the Fedora community. In this one year, I
met so many great people from Fedora community. I have visited hundreds of
forums, mailing lists. I meet so many people who uses Fedora (also who
doesn´t). I have learned so many things from them. Some of them are happy
using Fedora and some them are not. And I think, as a community member, it´s
my responsibility to inform you guys about some issues that I think, why
people doesnt like to use Fedora or switching to other distros. And
something, that we need to fix.
1. Need to include RPM Fusion with Fedora 11 default installation (but not
activated, like Fedora test repo or raw hide, as we don´t include
proprietary software). If this is not possible (may be because of some legal
issue), then I´ll say, we need a working GUI solution to install RPM Fusion.
According to RPM Fusion <http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration> they explained
a GUI solution to install the repo, but most of the time, it doesnt work at
all (I myself, tested thousands time, also so many people there has, who
tried, I searched for the solution, everyone give me CLI solution). And
KPackage Kit can´t install it. So we need a solution that will work for
GNOME and KDE both.
2. Need a GUI solution to install nVidia and ATI driver, that will
automatically install the appropriate driver (Ubuntu has a GUI *Hardware
Drivers *options that automatically download and install the driver, also
they have Envy, its another GUI solution)
3. Need a GUI solution to install all kind of proprietary Multimedia codecs
(Ubuntu has ubuntu-restricted-extras, they simply select it from package
manager, and it installs all kind of codecs including JAVA)
4. Need a complete GUI solution to install softwares offline from cache
(ofcourse if it can fix the dependency) or DVD Media.
5. There has a very easy way to install a rpm package from CLI (one single
package, that has not any dependency issue or if it has, it´s possible to
install the package by ignoring it). But from Fedora 9, GUI double click rpm
install doesnt work at all. So, we need a GUI solution of it.
6. Need to add CD/DVD repo with Fedora 11 default installation, so people
can use DVD to install softwares.
7. From /etc/yum.conf we need to edit keepcache=0 to 1 as default. So
people can use the cache to install software later or to some other PC.
Many of you will say, why we are following Ubuntu? Well, I´ll say, no, we
are not following them. This is the truth, what users want. And many of you
will think, this ideas are stupid, but truth is If this issues we can fix,
for sure, so many people will start using Fedora. My apologies, if I am
wrong anywhere.
