idea! - Fedora Marketing Book Club
by Robyn Bergeron
Greg's blog post today
(http://gregdekspeaks.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/fedoras-goals/) has
rekindled (no amazon pun intended, i swear!) a thought I had a while
back on starting a marketing book club. Mchua and I had discussed it
a bit on irc sometime late last year, but I think we were focused on
something else at the time, and the idea was lost.
Until now! I would like to propose that we have a "book club" for
marketing-reading-material, but of course, not limited to marketing
team members.
The basics of what I'm thinking are:
* We start with a book in March. One book per month - at the end of
each month, we have an IRC discussion on what we've learned, and how
we can apply it to Fedora and what we're working on. Hopefully,
everyone will want to do things like blog about what they've read and
learned, or write about it to the fedora-mktg mailing list, or add a
review to the book club wiki.
* Everyone is welcome to join. Nobody is -required- to join.
* Books are on our own individual dime (books are good for you! better
than coffee!) - we should do our best to pick things that are likely
available at the library (ie: not just freshly released last week).
If budget for a book is a problem and it can't be found, we should try
to accommodate people so they can participate.
The goal here (yes, I bang that goal drum a lot!) is to increase our
collective knowledge about All Things Marketing, provide a forum for
discussing what we've learned, and provide us with some brainstorming
and inspiration on things we can do to improve Marketing.
Thoughts? Feedback? :) I've made a wiki page to get the ball rolling
- hopefully we can work out the minor details (things like, "I have no
clue how to run a book club discussion, do you?") between now and
March. This is meant to be fun / enriching - not MORE WORK! - so I
hope people are interested, and if anyone thinks that one book a month
is too much, please say so.

Cheers!

Survey Software

At the Events FAD we spent a good chunk of time looking at and working
on some of the Lime Survey dependencies. Unfortunately, they have
modified some (and they claim most) of the bundled libraries,
effectively forking them. We talked about a number of different
mitigation strategies. We can get a number of people involved and try
and get these modifications accepted upstream, however that is likely
at least a month and likely many months of slow moving work, with no
guarantee of success.
I've included the IRC conversation below that I had with one of the
limesurvey devs.
We talked about a number of solutions at events FAD, with suggestions
ranging from, pushing patches upstream, to using different software,
to forking.
The path of least resistance is using different software, and I found
one package called phpESP which looks ok, I haven't found any bundled
libs at all in a really brief perusal of source. The community seems
somewhat active (the latest version was released in Janary)
Soooo - please take a look and see if it meets MKTG's needs. I may try
and package this tonight regardless of MKTG's decision, but if someone
wants to beat me to it, I have a 4 hour trip back, so feel free to
pick it up.
09:35 c_schmitz: sorry for the lag - basically the issue is that you
guys bundle libraries (which every web app
does, and we break them out and bundle the package separately) but you
guys have modified at least one of
those libraries, so packaging the upstream library doesn't really
help, as we are missing those changes.
09:42 yes, ke4qqq
09:42 we modified almost all liberaries
09:42 due to bugs etc
09:43 we communicated these bugs to the devs of these these libraries mostly
09:43 but they are very slow to fix
09:44 so I don't recommend to break out any of teh packages
09:44 unfortunately our packaging guidelines don't permit us to not -
(and debian is the same way)
09:45 http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:No_Bundled_Libraries
09:45 well, then you have a problem
09:50 I would not know how to solve this
09:51 using your bundled libraries will introduce certain bugs
09:51 bundled libraries=separate packages
09:51 yes
09:52 which on the other hand will mean that we will have bogus bugs
reported to us
09:52 for which we can't really give support
09:52 well we are actually discussing this at a Fedora Activity day -
and hopefully we can add an extra voice to
get those patches accepted upstream
09:52 won't be a short process unfortunately
09:53 but in the long run hopefully better for everyone
09:53 sure, but this is a huge problem with every packaging
09:53 Ubuntu packaging is a little more relaxed about that
09:53 yes it is (/me packages a number of webapps for Fedora and deal
with it a lot)
09:54 I totally appreciate your effort
09:54 It will help the LImeSurvey project to have to as a Linux package
09:54 better: Fedora package
09:55 you should also get in touch with nijaba
09:55 (Nicolas Barcet)
09:55 since he is the Ubunut packager
09:55 Ubuntu
09:55 ok, I'll do so

Goals in the Fedora project:
I would like to help in any way I can to spread the word about Fedora as
a great desktop OS. I would also like to help make a push for showing Fedora
as a great distro for beginners to learn. In my business I try to teach
people about the benefits of Open Source and I think I am in a great
position to bring many "new" Linux users to the Fedora Project. I see Fedora
as a alternative to Ubuntu for a first distro. Nothing against Ubuntu, but I
feel like new users should know that there are other choices out there.
Qulifications:
Well I successfully market my company on a day to day basis, so I intend
to apply those same skills towards marketing the Fedora Project. I am a very
detail oriented person and not afraid to speak my mind, so if critiques and
opinions are needed I'm your man. As I stated before I deal with clients on
a day to day basis that are frustrated with that other OS and have no clue
that there is an alternative. This puts me in a great position to spread the
word.
I look forward to getting involved and getting to know each of you. If
there is something else you would like to know about me, please do not
hesitate to ask.

Fwd: Re: Review: 3 top Linux distros go for different users
by Mel Chua
Forwarded with Michael Tiemann's permission. The short version: should
we look into (1) figuring out an optional (opt-in, I'd suggest) tweak to
get Fedora-specific search results when looking for Linux howtos, and/or
(2) SEO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization) at
some point?

I just installed Fedora 12 (DVD iso x86_64) this past weekend on a very
hostile piece of hardware: an old MacBookPro version 2,1. By hostile I
mean that it's now old enough to reject the installation of modern
versions of Mac OSX. The installation process went perfectly smoothly
until it was time to reboot, and that failed because the MBR and/or the
GPT has a "bootable" flag that needed to be reset. I reset the flag,
and then grub failed. Some googling led me to question whether my ext4
boot partition was really a proper choice, and when I backed up /boot to
some temp space in my rescued filesystem image, reformatted /boot as
ext2, and restored the contents, everything worked perfectly
thereafter. WIN!
What does this have to do with Ubuntu, the implied distro for non-power
users, you might ask?
I have yet to find a way to search via Google for answers to my Fedora
problems without Ubuntu being a prominent, if not nearly exclusive
search result. Well, that's not quite true...by adding +fedora -ubuntu
I start to get the kinds of results I'm looking for, but by golly for
all that Google is supposed to be my Big Brother, it keeps trying to
lead me away from Fedora and over to Ubuntu.
If there were some way to make technical support help focus on the OS
installed on one's machine, I think we'd find at least a level playing
field. Any way we could set up Mozilla preferences (and other browsers)
to treat "Linux" like Fedora?

Might be a bit exclusive - some books are hard to get at a reasonable price
outside the US.
I would prefer open eBooks, ofcourse.
Lacking that, there should be an upper limit on the cost of a book. We must
make sure that all participants have an equal chance here.

Conferencing Tool
by wonderer
Hy there,
The MKTG FAD is coming, several people asked for recordings of that
event and as i know there are some testings around for video-recording @
Event FAD.
I have looked around several times for a VOIP Solution for such things.
At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VoIP_software are several
products and also Online-Webconferencing like https://www.phonesty.com/
or http://www.dimdim.com/ are around.
Any other ideas ... ?
mit freundlichen Grüßen / best regards
