Goddard
by Nelson Marques
Hi,
I've started this threat regarding Goddard to point a couple of things.
Who is Robert Goddard? http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_H._Goddard
I am supposing Goddard (after the scientist).
Is there a possibility that on the Release Notes (1st page) we can
enter a small caption with a small text (2 or 3 lines, possible photo?)
about who is Goddard?
Goals:
# Provide the audience a small background that justifies why we chosed
Goddard (reinforce the idea that we don't select dumb things for our
names, and that we promote in this case Technology).
# Provide a small quote of Goddard:
"It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday
is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow." as an introductory
theme to our Release Highlights after the Official Release moto.
# Sharing some culture with the universe.
And finally my suggestion for the Release moto: "F13, delivering the
future today".
;)
As usual, feel free to share.
NM
PS: Concerns: The space exploration (in this case a rocket engineer) is
being highlighted in the media a lot. I am not aware of possible
cultural problems that might arise from here with anti-american
feelings. Though I believe we're not providing free ammunition to be
used against us, it's always a feeling of concern when addressing to
international (or minorites) audiences.

Release Slogan Pre-work; need feedback!
by Robyn Bergeron
In the interest of getting things out the door, since we're using
meeting time today to discuss Feature List, I've done some prework on
the Release Slogan call.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release_slogan_SOP#Email_Template (I
put the content in the body below.)
But before we send it out, we need to do cleanup / clearup on a few things:
1) Some of the criteria on F13_release_slogan is not listed as
criteria on Release_slogan_SOP; specifically, the stuff about being
short, call to action, etc. I'm assuming those things haven't
changed, so if someone wants to do a diff on that and make sure that
the ducks are in a row and identical on both pages, that would be
awesome.
2) The Release_slogan_SOP page has a big table at the bottom for
potential release slogans, themes, etc, but since it's an SOP page we
shoudl probably add a note in that that page is NOT where people
should be populating their ideas, just to be clear; it's more of a
how-to page. (Unless the intent is for them to fill that in there, in
which case, we should probably figure out where we want ideas -
F13_release_slogan, or Release_slogan_SOP.)
3) F13_release slogan needs to link to F13_artwork. Also, has a final
wallpaper been chosen for Alpha, or are we not entirely dependent on
that so much as the overall theme having been chosen?
4) Schedule currently has Alpha being out on 3/2; that's also the day
when we are supposed to decide on a final slogan. I'm assuming we need
the slogan for the Alpha announcement work on 3/1, so should we push
back our final selection one day to 3/1?
5) Do we still go through the process of sending the narrowed-down
list to Design for a final slogan selection?
Whew. That's all. Email template is below. (I cut and pasted it out of
the wiki, which is why it's horrifically ugly, but the content is more
or less there, minus some dates we need to figure out.)
-robyn
''Note: This template was borrowed from the
[http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/marketing/2009-September/010788....
F12 cycle call for release slogan ideas.]''
We need a slogan for the F13 release. It will be chosen one week from
now on 3/2. A release slogan is a short call-to-action that fits the
artwork theme from Design,
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan#Themes. (F12's
slogan was "Unite," F11's slogan
was "Reign.")
If you are interested in suggesting ideas for the release slogan,
please take a look at the Release Slogan SOP, and the criteria for
selection, at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release_slogan_SOP. The
slogan should be short, and a call to action; it should be positive,
and reinforce the idea that Fedora can help the end-user achieve
something great. It should also reflect some of ideas and themes
found in the release artwork, and, if possible, also touch upon the
Four Foundations (http://https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Foundations).
Please put your slogan ideas here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F13_release_slogan#New_slogan_ideas. Feel
free to discuss slogan ideas on this and other mailing lists - but also
make sure to put your ideas in that table on that wiki page so they'll
be counted.
The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 3/2 at 20:00 UTC, which is our
next Marketing meeting
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_meetings). We'll be discussing
submissions there, and then Mo Duffy will take that input and select the
final slogan on behalf of the Design team on (''need a date here,
dude!')' Let the marketing list know
if you have any questions/comments/concerns - and let the wiki table
know if you have any ideas!

A question to this list regarding Fedora as a Product
by Nelson Marques
Hi all,
I would like to ask something from this list to help me understand a
bit more of Fedora. I am new to the list, and I'm currently trying to
assimilate more information through the Fedora Project wiki before I can
contribute. This is important for me to know.
- How does Fedora positions itself amongst other distributions. What
values do we try to transmit, what image should be presented to the
users (new and current).
- How is differentiation presented in communication.
- What is main segment we trying to reach.
- What is the role of productivity in Fedora communication.
- What are the main goals at a short term (1 year).
Thanks in advance,
Nelson.
PS: feel free to point any online documentation that might exist
regarding this points.

Re: Call for Participation - Fedora 13 Talking Points

It doesn't. A Talking Point should be clearly advantageous to the
latest release or somehow contemporaneous with the release. For
example, the public debut of the Fedora Community portal, which was
not technically a feature of Fedora 11, was still a Talking Point.
Since the TPs will be used quite a bit in formulating release-specific
marketing material, they'll naturally favor features. But there
should be room for one or two non-feature related, important things
going on around the release.

My first offer as a contribution
by Nelson Marques
Hi all,
I was wondering how I could contribute for this list. Something came
across my mind, and I'm not really sure if this kind of documentation
exists already, if not I'm willing to put this up as a Project for
Fedora Community and thus contributing actively for the Marketing List.
The main idea is not making something useless, instead I would believe
this would help at a later stage on strategical planning, and from my
personal point of view, will help me as well, since by doing this I can
eventually get a more objective insight about the current state of
Fedora.
My proposal is to elaborate a SWOT Analysis for Fedora
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWOT_analysis). Performing this
contribution won't at any level interfere with Fedora neither with the
current tasks being developed on the field.
This can be done to cover many aspects, and for that I would ask from
this list which aspects you want to be covered, like: Reputation in
Market, etc etc etc.
Please provide feedback and information (if something like this has
been done in the past).
I'm willing to put the required time on this (I have loads of time for
the next months since I'm recovering from a nervous problem) and make
this happen. Will it be welcomed ?
Nelson.

Re: Response to "Getting Fedora Out of the If-Then Loop"

I'm not defending what was done (or lack thereof). I was just quoting
the cited email where the question was asked if there was any
marketing done for the spins, and responding with "I don't know, but
by all means, be more bold in your asking for marketing support in the
future." :)
I don't want to bang the "lack of resources" drum here too much,
because I know everybody is in the same boat. (Frankly, it's not a bad
boat to be in - the boat where we have a lot of creative people, with
excellent ideas, and lots of determination. Things could be worse,
folks!) Most of the marketing folks are -very- part time. Our
community is growing, though, and we're doing the best we can right
now to organize what resources we have around the requests we get, and
to get a better workflow on what we do, and have resources like SOPs
available so that new contributors can hop in and get started.
We do have a Marketing FAD planned for mid-March; I think what we're
talking about here, which is essentially marketing support for spins
and / or projects / features, is important enough that we can carve
out some time to discuss how we can better support development and
spins SIGs with marketing materials and promotions. I've created a
wiki page to kick off some brainstorming on ideas.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_support_brainstorm
At the Marketing FAD, we should (we're going to have to carve time out
here, or schedule an online day where we can discuss this) come up
with an action plan of sorts; specifically, lay out the various
services we could provide, what kind of time those requests would
take, and come up with a schedule that we can agree upon with another
group (Spins sig? FESCo? Taking ideas here...) that is realistic in
terms of taking requests and providing deliverables in a reasonable
time frame that is agreeable to everyone.
Bottom line: If anyone here has ideas on what potential requests would
look like, what kind of time-frame things would be needed in, general
gripes, ponies, etc., please add your commentary to the listed wiki
page so we can take it into account. Marketing is not perfect. We're
working on it :) , but we need to know what help you need and how to
give it to you :) Tell us!
