Meeting Log: The Road to Solve-ation - Dealing with fp.o video
by Robyn Bergeron
Quick background - rrix has been looking for a good place to put some
of our videos from mktg-fad. The point was brought up that we have a
ton of legacy video on http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/videos/
that could benefit from some hosting, better naming, SEO, and the
like.
Outcome: Threethirty is taking the ball and running on the "get a
proposal out to mel to get the college students running with a cool
project." Mchua needs the proposal by monday; many of us will be
around #fedora-mktg all weekend to support threethirty on anything he
needs.
See logs for more details. Thanks to all who participated :)
Meeting started by rbergeron at 02:09:40 UTC. The full logs are

Fedora on the Press.
by Nelson Marques
Good people,
I have a question, do we have currently any project where we compile or
provide information about what the press says of Fedora? Something like
"Fedora on the Press" ?
If so, where to access it.

Suggestion for Marketing people

I would like to point the following as a serious read for everyone who
is related to the Marketing Team, and eventually every single enthusiast
to get a in view of "our" (Marketing Droids) world.

3 upcoming Fedora Marketing Classroom sessions
by Mel Chua
At the Marketing FAD, one thing we agreed on was that (1) we have a lot
to learn, and (2) getting cool people into Fedora Classroom to teach
things so we can document their wisdom for posterity would be totally
rockin'.
Kara Schiltz, Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier, and Sean Daly have all stepped up
with generous offers to run Fedora Classroom sessions on various
Marketing/Brand/PR related topics they have expertises in during the
month of April - so this is a heads-up, a quick way to nail the
scheduling down, and a chance for people to give feedback on the topics
coming up. (Are these what folks are interested in? What would you like
to see/hear? Who would you like to hear from?)
Thanks to Kara, Zonker, and Sean for offering to spend time with us!
--Mel
== Kara: PR workflow demystified ==
Kara: is free in mid-to-late April, so I will propose April 13 (Tuesday)
- if that's not too early in the month. I was thinking either 3-4pm EDT
or 5-6pm EDT on that day so it comes either right before or after our
weekly Marketing meeting - Kara, would that be ok with you? If not, when
would be a good date and time? We're flexible.
Topic: the existing workflow and decisionmaking process around doing PR
for Fedora. How do you choose what audiences to target for what message
about what feature when? Also, what would you like to see for
international PR around Fedora (can you help us articulate a target that
the community can work to hit)?
== Zonker: How to make life awesome for journalists ==
Zonker: April 20 (Tuesday) - he can do anytime between 9am-6pm EDT, but
I'm also going to propose either 3-4pm EDT or 5-6pm EDT for this one.
(Zonker, your pick - and if neither works for you, counterpropose.)
Topic: what does the distro release PR process look like from the
perspective of a journalist, and what are the things we (as a project's
marketing team) can do to make life easier for you (the journalist)?
== Sean:
Sean: Would April 27 (Tuesday) work for you? The timing might be more
difficult because Sean is in France (iirc) and so our normal Marketing
meeting time is quite late in the evening for him. Sean, if 3-4pm EDT
(1900 UTC) on that date would work for you, that would be great - if
not, perhaps immediately after your Sugar Labs marketing meeting, which
I believe would be 16:00 UTC? (If neither works for you, counterpropose.)
Topic: Fedora marketing business case - explore what the targets,
brand values, and priorities are. (This ties in nicely with what Nelson
has been working on, and I think will bring us full-circle just in time
to think about F14 going forward.)

SELinux vs AppArmor
by Nelson Marques
Though this is not of the field of Marketing, despite I'm hitting
constantly on SELinux (don't know why), and someone told me yesterday
(pointed a 2008 news) that Novell's was going to abandon AppArmor,
despite of all, here's an article I've found on LinuxToday.COM:
http://www.ghacks.net/2010/03/24/get-to-know-linux-apparmor/
They give relevance to a product which is not our own :(
This is one more reason why we should take a closer look to "special"
technology and it's competitors...
Anyway... just a thought.

SWOT - Strengh's - The Master Plan
by Nelson Marques
Dear all,
Back on my SWOT, here's the master plan...
I've been working on: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing/SWOT_STR
My goal with this is to present a light weight call for help to Fedora
Community. On that webpage I want to run a community driven contribution
(similar to what we done with the release slogan). People should go
there and fill in the table with the right information. I've established
the end of May (30th) to take the info and process it accordingly.
Now... the deal... I need to spread the word about this on emails to
lists so that people can participate and know what we are doing. Who can
help on this list towards that goal ? Advertise this so that people are
aware of it's importance and can help.
I can go on and fill in the table (I haven't on purpose), but I don't
have the know-how and don't know enough about Fedora to handle this, in
words I would ignore most likely important stuff. This shouldn't happen,
and eventually a SELinux developer for example would be able to point
out its importance on Fedora, as an artist could point out his work
importance.
Since we are collecting all the important points, it makes sense to me
to call for help on the Fedora Community. Another question to the
list... Who should we contact and appeal for participation? any
restrictions?
Finally and also very important, if someone wants to review my english,
feel free to do so...
The goal here is to point all the important things that make Fedora a
strong organization and product. All the points for Strength's (later
also for Weaknesses) have to be controllable by Fedora. This means that
we shouldn't point our things that are out of our grasp. Only reinforces
the appeal for the community to participate on this.
By the way, the plan is to cover the Fedora 12 life cycle. Later will
make a new review for Fedora 13 and so on for every release.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Nelson

Fedora 13 Release and Communication

What is nmarques doing?
by Nelson Marques
Hi,
I want leave this lines explaining a bit of what I am doing. First as
people are aware I'm working on organizing an event to promote GNU/Linux
and Fedora across students and IT Professionals (who might become
contributors), in fact the main thing about this event to establish a
bond between Fedora and Open Source enthusiasts.
Currently I'm rallying organizations who might contribute to this,
amongst them city halls, IT giants (who are employers of IT
professionals and Linux enablers), higher education students (future IT
engineers) and local students.
The event I'm planning is to hold several conferences (between 8 to 10)
during 2 days and have a small Linux Install Fest/Party for the general
community.
This event is going to provide feedback on the local community and their
probable future involvement in projects such as Fedora, thus, it will
also prepare ourselfs for a possible official PT_PT Fedora community.
On a personal level I'm working on a project to present to the Aveiro
City Hall, the share holder of EMA (Aveiro Municipal Stadium) which is a
Class B Soccer stadium in Portugal (part of the Portuguese Euro 2006
stadium projects). This stadium has a modern infra-structure, not only
for sports events, but also for corporate usage. 2 modern conference
rooms, lots of free premier space and some of the finest technology
available. My project is based on a way to bring more funding for the
EMA organization, and will be based on a open source plataform for audio
and video deployment infra-structure; to be used at corporate level and
events. This way they can broadcast events and sell publicity without
major investments (considering they are spending around 861 million
€/year), the investment is peanuts and can generate massive revenue and
also promote their corporate spaces through the availability of such
structure to the corporations present.
This is a link that I would like to establish and balance an involvement
of Fedora here as a platform (gnu/linux) enabler and FOSS enabler. Of
course this would be more on the field of a corporation, still, I need
to nurse this politicians has they can enable lots of things in the
future for us at a local level.
I would like also to get my University involved in this as up to a
point my contributions go from a student of them and they indeed have a
lot to teach/preach that we can learn.
I don't know if this makes sense, but the theorical stuff should
provide the support needed to create a local Fedora community, which can
be sponsored by the City Hall. If such a community appears, there are
other things that need to be done, else it will disappear shortly after.
So we need to keep events up and keep people being present. For such to
happen having a space we can use is great. We can do local hack fests,
meetings, conferences, etc. If we can accomplish this, eventually go to
schools and give conferences about FOSS/Fedora, we can start nursing
future enthusiasts and such to be fond of us and foment their needs of
being a part of something great like Fedora.
This is what I am trying to accomplish, maybe a fool's dream, but like
the CEO of Coca Cola says:
"we only fail when we stop trying".

Building Communities
by Nelson Marques
Hi all,
I would like to point a couple of things to this list...
* I'm not a wiki guru, though I'm trying to improve this.
* https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Building_Communities
The previous link is something in which I will be working for the
future alongside with the SWOT.
Following a proposal from Rodrigo to build a PT_PT local Fedora
Community, I am gathering all the information that I can alongside with
the methods I will be using to explore possibilities and make this
happen. The previous link is where I'm going to deploy all the stuff I'm
working. Don't see this as a production document and please keep it
within the Marketing group only until there is actually something to
show. I will documentate everything in a set of links on the wiki page
flagged under the following categories: nmarques | Marketing.
Anyone who wants to keep up with my work or help, please feel free to
also edit and improve. I would ask kindly if someone can review my
English once in a while and correct it to do so.
I hope the title won't intimidate anyone and it might be misleading. In
fact the community is already builded ;) by yourselfs and those
previously, though this is to be taken at a local level, establishing a
Fedora Community in a small country like Portugal, from where we want to
do the following:
* Create events
* Promote Fedora Core Linux
* Promote Fedora technology
* Gather contributors
* Increase Fedora community, locally and internationaly
* Be a beacon of light in the Portuguese FOSS world
* Help other organizations like ANSOL
* Actively place pressure on governamental institutions (like ANSOL is
doing)
* Develop bonds with strategical partners
---
Regarding the SWOT
I will be messing up with the SWOT page soon
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing/SWOT) and start working towards
it. I've got a lot of information to share regarding external
environment and will call upon help for the internal environment to the
community. This is to be done regarding Fedora 12... and later to be
redone and reviewed after every Release cycle. I will be maintaining
this and keeping this alive.
And since most of you are stressing out with so much information, a
link to chill out, one of my favourites:

Strongly recommend if you like (got mine already):
