Something more about Fedora 13... and YOUTUBE.
by Nelson Marques
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Fedora+13&aq=f
Disclaimer: I propose a truce on this thread and no "licensing" weapons
of mass destruction please. The important thing is feedback.
That is the result of a query for "Fedora 13"... some of those videos
are pretty nice. I don't know who is the person on the videos neither
the full extent of his publications. I understand that we have problems
with H.264 and it's seen as something malefic to our noble beliefs.
Anyway, my questions:
# How could Marketing support people who develop that work? Could we
provide them more material? (at least compilation of links?).
# Should we support their work? (their work, not their ways of diffusing
information, so we can skip the H264 issues)
# Should we run something like a small program (probably a database of
info) to cooperate with people who are actually promoting us?
# About user feedback. Shouldn't we lurk and take notes on criticism
made by people outside our community? Eventually try to identify for
flaws and prepare some corrections so we can actually try to leverage
their expectations with satisfaction ?
Now considering the following search: "FEDORA REVIEW"
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Fedora+review&aq=f
A simple indicator that pops out, is that hits have been dropping since
Fedora 10 ;). Less people interested ?
Can we for Fedora 14 work on feature profiles maybe earlier on and have
some material already prepared for people doing reviews? Should we
actually start a program or campaign so that we can provide segmented
information for everyone who wants to do this kind of work?
By the way, I would like to point something very interesting...
Hits for "Fedora PS3" are incredible... Who is doing this Fedora stuff
on PS3? Do we have a good reason for neglecting this? Because to me it
appears that this gets a lot of interest... is that a SPIN ? 8)
Another interesting thing is comparing the search results and hits for:
Fedora
Ubuntu
opensuse
debian
arch linux.
This mainly result of pure curiosity.

Self-Introduction: (Manuel Escudero)
by Manuel Escudero
Hello, My Name is Manuel Escudero and I'm from Mexico, I live in Mexico
City. My Fedora Account System username is jmlevick and my IRC nick is
jmlevick too, (Almost all my Nicks are jmlevick: Gmail, Google Wave, Skype
no, I changed it, but it used to be "jmlevick" too)
I learned about the Fedora Marketing Team Trough the Wiki, while I was
looking for something to contribute in, so I was interested in Joining
because I'm a "People Person" and I like this kind of stuff.
I've Worked in Open Source and/or Free Software Projects in the past. Almost
all of the projects I've worked on were started by me because I'm in charge
of the Xenode Systems Project (A Registered Brand Here at my Country) But
talking about Free Software, There's only one really important: The Devlexo
Linux Distro. I worked in this distro because I wanted to make something for
the Old PC's so, it's very good for slow old computers and it's based in
OpenSUSE.
The other projects are not Open Source but they are all free. I mostly build
Webapps based on Google App Engine, the Google API's and Adobe AIR, But I
also enjoy building free Software for Windows, Linux and Mac OS (Like my
Cross-Platform Web Browser based on Google Chrome)
I've also worked in other Marketing Projects in the past, for my own company
most of the time working with the publicity, logos/designs and some
strategies to get the company "up" in the Internet.
My Skills, wich I hope to utilize in Fedora Marketing include:
- Good "People Skills" (Like convincing, selling and stuff like that), I
also like to solve problems and I'm good at that field, I also like to help
people to feel more comfortable in their Workflows.
- Other Skills: I like to create publicity strategies that are really good
to get into a Wider Audience, I'm Pacient, Like to work hard and I'm also
very charismatic and I'm good in get productivity high in some ways.
- I'd also Like to Learn how the Linux Community uses to work and organize,
what can we do as a really big team and how we can improve the Linux World
for all the people.
When I'm not working for Fedora, I'm usually in the School or working for
Xenode Systems. I like to play the guitar, sing, sometimes read or write
texts about Life in my Knol. I also like writting for the Xenode Systems
Blog and I like to spread the "Linux Word" around the world, Between
friends, family and other people I know. Sometimes I repair computers as a
Hobby and I like to convince people of using Linux. A couple of goals I have
for the Fedora Project are becoming fedora into the most used Linux
distribution of the world because it's great and I'd also like to see some
improvements in fedora such as in the hardware support part and in the
pre-installed packages. I'm very interested in carry Linux into the schools
and some other public places to get the people used to it, specially to
Fedora.
I was wondering about the future you as a team have planned for fedora in
all the major aspects.
I would like to share with you my most recent Linux Anecdote, it is some
kind of report about the FlisoL Here in México City:
"Today took place FlisoL here in Mexico City as well as in Monterrey, I went
to the ITESM campus (In Coyoacán) and initially it was half ugly because
when I arrived to the conference it was a little late and the Conference
which I wanted to get was knida "cancelled".
Then, I had to wait until 3: 00 pm to join into another one that I was
interested in. (it was 11: 00 am at the time) So I decided to go to the
cinema to watch a movie and return at 3 o' Clock; Unfortunately I was late
and I arrived at the 4: 00 pm Conference, the last, that was about music in
Linux and free software. Not many people entered but was entertaining
because they began giving an introduction to a sheet music MIDI editor, and
when the doubts "arrived" and the speaker was in problems I started to
resolve them :) There was a point where they turned off the computer and
practically I devoted myself to talk about Linux, and what you can do with
it, everything we do as Fedora users and some of my projects of Xenode
Systems. Between questions and questions, I took the rest of the Conference
evangelizing people about Linux and I had fun enough, also I devoted myself
to speak for example about the taboo of "Ubuntu" as the easier distribution
in general supporting RPM Distros, (Obviously Fedora in the most cases) and
how Linux is able to cover all the capabilities of Windows and Mac in some
areas offering up more. So I was solving the speaker questions and who
attended ones in General, talking about issues not only in the musical field
:)
I hope that in the future I can enjoy more events... Thanks to the Fedora
Community for allowing me to be awared about them."
And I would also Like to talk you about my most recent projects and plans:
Little time ago, I builted a Webapp called "Tux-Cellar" My work team and I
want to build a Community Around the app itself, because is builted for
Linux Propouses (It's Like a Social Search Engine for Linux Binaries Like
".DEB", ".RPM", "APTICONS" and others), so begining with this, we started
having Ideas, I might work in a New Fedora Spin and a Desktop Client for a
APTICONS REPO... Some other Jewels of my webapp collection are the webproxy
Calyphrox and SkyDirect, an app that uses an unnofficial SkyDrive API to
create little permanent direct download Links for your hosted files of that
server.
In the past I've also "tried out" some google products like Google App
Engine and Google Wave in ther "Dev Previews", and well, I think that's all.
More important stuff about me can be found here:

Thanks! Please Help me to Get Started!!
Have a Nice Day :)

Quick heads-up: Ubuntu memory leak issue
by Adam Williamson
Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up. Some of you may have read about a
memory leak that cropped up very late in Ubuntu 10.04 development
process. They kindly put this phrase in their explanation of the bug:
"One possible solution is to roll back the GLX 1.4 enablement patches,
and the patch which caused the memory leak to appear. These GLX patches
were produced by RedHat and incorporated into Debian, they were not
brought in due to Ubuntu-specific requirements"
which can obviously create the impression that the patches in question
actually come from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or from Fedora.
Short story for the impatient: the problematic patch is not in any
version of Fedora and never has been, Fedora is not subject to this
memory leak and never has been.
So if you see any stories drawing the implication that Fedora is also
subject to this leak, please feel free to correct them - it isn't.
Longer version for the curious: I'm not sure about the claim that the
'GLX 1.4 enablement patches' come from Red Hat, they may be in RHEL for
some reason, but they're not in Fedora; we wouldn't need to backport GLX
1.4 from X server 1.8 to 1.7 as we're just shipping X server 1.8 in
Fedora 13 anyway.
Regardless, the actual patch that caused the problem in Ubuntu was not
part of the GLX 1.4 backport, but was an attempt to fix this bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26394
Sometimes X would crash when Clutter-based apps closed. Fedora did
actually suffer from this bug too:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=579756
However, Ubuntu and Fedora took different approaches to fixing it.
Ubuntu seems to have jumped on one of Jesse Barnes' early attempts to
fix the problem (Jesse works for RH, hence the Red Hat link). In the
end, though, if you read the upstream bug, Jesse ceded to Kristian
Høgsberg (who, for the record, works for Intel), who provided a better
fix which was committed to upstream. For Fedora 13, we took Kristian's
fix, not any of Jesse's attempts. This was included in
xorg-x11-server-1.8.0-7.fc13 . That seems to have caused a couple of
problems with compositing managers:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=584832
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=577142
-7 was sent as a candidate update for F13, got bad Bodhi feedback (as
you'd expect) and was withdrawn; it never went into the 'stable' F13
repo (the one from which the final F13 will actually be built). The bugs
were fixed by adding one more upstream patch, from Michel Dänzer:
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/xorg-x11-server/F-13/xserver-1.8...
to xorg-x11-server-1.8.0-8.fc13 . That build has good feedback:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/xorg-x11-server-1.8.0-8.fc13
and was pushed to F13 updates two days ago. So in summary our processes
worked very well, we didn't jump on an incomplete fix, we didn't push
the initial upstream fix to the 'stable' F13 because our feedback system
made us aware of the problems it caused, we did push the fully-working
fixed package when it was confirmed ready, and we were never at any
point subject to the memory leak issue. This is actually quite a nice
story of our QA processes working effectively, if someone's looking for
such a thing. =)

Moblin spin website: things needed for completion
by Mel Chua
Hi! We're sprinting (as you may have noticed) on the spin pages for the
F13 release. Will be addressing each spin page separately - right now,
this email is about the Moblin spin. Sending to Websites list, current
spin owners, and Marketing (for a content sanity check).
The status of this list will be changing rapidly in the next 35 minutes.
Will update when current sprint is done.

== blocking ==
* Download: Make sure download links point to the correct image.
* Content: Front page needs to be fixed to not refer to education. :)
* Screenshots: taken, need to be uploaded into design
* Design: need all banners for this spin made, as per
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Spin_webpage_creation_SOP#Create_the_images
* CSS: the "support" tab is dropped below the other tabs; need to fix
alignment.
* Website linked from main spins.fp.o page: not yet (only when all other
blockers are cleared)
== non-blocking ==
* About tab: good content. probacould have more screenshots if someone
wants to improve upon this, but totally not mandatory.
* How To Help: How can people participate? Is this evident from
somewhere on the spins page? (note: we may want to consider adding a
"Participate!" or "Want to help?" tab to the design, but that's a convo
for later)
== done ==
* Support tab: points to all the right places for the mini group
* Website exists: yes, http://spins.fedoraproject.org/moblin/

Re: Quick heads-up: Ubuntu memory leak issue
by Jan Wildeboer
With all the facts so nicely laid out, it definitely is worth a blog entry.
I would paint it as "a day in the life of community-driven QA" and focus on
the whole story. With a short sentence on how the patch we ignored caused
some problems in that other distro with a link to the ubuntu leak story.
That way makes sure it will get connected and indexed in the right context
but readers will see that this is really just sth worth mentioning, not
worth discussing.
I can write it on my blog (http://jan.wildeboer.net) as google seemingly
likes my blog and puts it quite high in its ranking.

Thanks to Matthew Garrett for the correction.
