"Thankful" Hashtag Campaign: #FOSSgiving
by Remy DeCausemaker
bkp,
We're overdue for a catchup on a variety of things, but I have a
specific request from Fedora magazine.
Today, in our Editorial meeting we discussed how with next week being
the Holiday, we wanted to do something special, but we also wouldn't
have as much time/people/resources to publish major articles.
So what we came up with was a social media campaign to encourage
people to be "Thankful" during Thanksgiving, and tag/shout-out/thank
any Free/Open Source Software people/projects in a tweet.
We would then cherry pick some of the best ones, to be embedded in a
Fedora Magazine Post and published on Thanksgiving.
I got no matches on #FOSSgiving, so that one is my vote, but some
other hashtags we were throwing around were:
#FedoraFriends (some noise)
#Friendora (some noise)
#ThankYouFOSS
#FOSSTgiving
#TYFOSS
#FOSSTY
#ThanksFromFedora
#FedoraThanksyou
#thnxfrmfedora
#FedoraLove (noisy)
Some Possible Tweets Introducing the Hashtag:
Have a favorite Free Software or Open Source Project, Community, or
Contributor? Take a moment to say Thank You this year with #FOSSgiving
Have a favorite #FreeSoftware or #OpenSource Project, Community, or
Contributor? Take a moment to say #ThankYou this year with #FOSSgiving
Have a favorite Free Software or Open Source Project, Community, or
Contributor? Take a moment to be #Thankful this year with #FOSSgiving
Have a favorite #FreeSoftware or #OpenSource Project, Community, or
Contributor? Take a moment to say Thank You this year with #FOSSgiving
Some example tweets could be like:
This #FOSSgiving I'm thankful for @tpope and his #vim plugins that
help me every day to write every line of text in a fraction of the
time
This #FOSSGiving I'm thankful for @inkscape which I use to design and
create at home and at work (and for saving me thousands of dollars!)
I'm cc'ing the mktg, commops, and design list on this thread, so that
we can all work together to help promote this and make it happen.
Thoughts?

'Let's test Wayland' article
by Jiri Eischmann
Hi,
we in the desktop team would like to make the final push towards
Wayland in F24 and for that we need as much test coverage and user
feedback in F23 as possible.
We're planning to backport the latest Wayland support to F23 so that
users don't have to run Rawhide and we cooperate with the Fedora QA
team to provide users with tutorials how to debug Wayland issues and
write useful reports.
I'd like to write an article about it for Fedora Magazine to reach as
many users as possible. Do you think it'd be a good fit for the
Magazine?

Spam Queue on Fedora Magazine
by Ryan Lerch
Hi all,
just a heads up that we frequently have legitimate comments in the Spam
queue on the Magazine. So if you have the ability to moderate this
queue, please never click the "Empty Spam" button.
I have noticed that legitimate comments that appear in the Spam folder
seem to always be marked in the spam folder as "Cleared by Akismet" --
not sure why, if they are cleared by akismet, they are still in the spam
folder. But all i have been doing to clear the queue, is:
1. Open the spam folder, and search for "Cleared" on the page with the
find in page function of my web browser.
2. Review the comments, and mark any legitimate comments as not spam.
3. select all the remaining comments in the page, and delete them
4. repeat for all the other pages of spam comments
Note too that marking a comment as not spam only puts it back in the
normal comments pending queue, so you will need to go there to finally
approve the comment to get it viewable on the site.

ryanlerch

[Magazine] Reminder about post status
by Paul W. Frields
I wanted to remind people how to use status settings for posts on the
Fedora Magazine:
1. Pitch -- this is for an idea where no draft has been done yet. If
you take a pitch and start working on it, set yourself as the author,
and move to Draft status.
2. Draft -- this is for drafts in progress. When the author is
finished with the draft and thinks it's ready for review, move to
Pending Review status.
3. Pending Review -- this is for an article that needs to have
editorial & featured image completed. (It might be better to call
this "Pending," but meh.)
We also have "Holding Pen," which is for pitches that we don't want to
publish, but which might be adapted somehow later. That way we don't
keep looking at the same moldy, unapproved pitches repeatedly.
When an article is finished, it can be scheduled based on our meeting
notes. Just set a date/time, remembering that early morning UTC time
(around 0300-0400) is optimal. This means we get maximum number of
people around the world awake when we publish.

Use of Link shorteners on Twitter
by Ryan Lerch
Hi all,
Just wondering what people think about not using any link shorteners on
the official Fedora twitter feed. Twitter actually passes all links in
tweets through their own t.co/ link shortener, so using another one is
just (IMHO) unnecessarily obfuscating the link from our followers on
twitter. (twitter presents all t.co links as the full text, but the link
itself is t.co)
Looking back through the feed, the main link shortener being used is
ow.ly, which i assume is being done by whoever is using Hootsuite.

"Bump" an older Magazine article?
by Justin W. Flory
Hi all,
One last thing I noticed before I headed off the bed - seems like one of
ryanlerch's articles from mid-2014 about copying over the Fedora ISOs to
a USB drive for install has had a surge in popularity today. Might it be
a good idea to do a touchup and bump it back to the top of the Magazine
for this week? Seems like it's a valuable article that could help bring
in some more attention.

Thanks again.
