Well, Im invited to give a speech on free software/opensource to about
60 18-years old kids on 22-23 april 2006

Place: Salle des loisirs de Lapoutroie (next to the church)
This event is about video games on lan, CounterStrike 1.6 (5 vs 5) and
Warcraft 3 (1 vs 1)
Each participant needs to subscribe for a 7 € ticket which includes.
- a sandwich, a drink for one euro
- unlimited coffee, just to keep the rhythme
- Free Parking
- and much more.
This event is organised by my friends, who happen to be those to whom
I've introduced Fedora :)

So about my speech :)
My speech will be mostly on opensource software equivalent to
propriety softs. Sure, of course more than once the word "fedora" will
come out of my mouth.
Afterwards those little geeks will eventually have time to ask me
questions or share their doubts.

How would you speak differently to a group of 18 yr old (errrr) kids,
then you would to older people?
And now that we ARE getting into it... What do you (any ambassador that
has spoken), concentrate on, when speaking about fedora?
1 Is it contributing to FOSS?
2 Why Fedora over another OS?
3 Is it how FOSS has changed the world?
4 The general Free as in Freedom speech?
5 Is it the usual ${If you code FOSS, you will get better jobs}
6 Use fedora and you can be cool, and grow your hair like Gregdek
What is the underlying message of your talk?
My talks are usually a mixture of 2 and 4 (And 6, of course ;)

Going there, to talk about their favorite games are not compatible
with linux, will eventually make them lose interest in my
presentation.
Or even can't play mp3, avi, ...
My public will be 18 years guys/gals.
Surely, they will have a 'don't touch' image in their heads about open
source softwares.
Ill stress mostly on things that will catch their attention such :
- Xgl , aiglx doesn't work on my nvidia based laptop till now
- its transparency capabilities
- 3ddesktop
- amarok
- lots of kde-apps eye candies as well,
( i havent yet chosen what to present)

If your starting goal is to introduce them to OpenSource, you may have
to break the sales process up into baby steps. Find someplace between
where they are now and where you'd like them to be (Fedora).
Think about getting a foot in the door and then being invited back.
Every successive visit brings you closer to the desired outcome.
I'd disagree when you say that they may have a 'don't touch' attitude
about FOSS. After all, they're interested enough to bring you out - Yes?
Your audience in this case is ripe for things that are free. Not only
are they more open to the ideals of FOSS, but more importantly 18 year
olds aren't known for their financial stability.
My best advice for the group would be to get them with what they're
looking for - GAMES. Live discs are also good - PCLinuxOS has a new DVD
SuperGamer out. Wolvix has Games Edition (CD). There's also Knoppix
Games (DVD).
Get them hooked on FOSS and Linux... then talk with them about Fedora.
It's perfectly acceptable to say you don't use those distros and answer
their questions with Fedora.
Is that helpful, or should I prepare for a stoning?

New subject: LAN Welche - After Thought
One other baby step from Win to FOSS is TheOpenCD.
It has a lot of useful applications like OOo, and a few games. It gets
people use to the applications before they take the plunge with their OS.
A word of caution if you use TheOpenCD... There is a live Ubuntu on the
disc. I wonder how many freak outs that's caused? Can you imagine
forgetting to remove the disc and seeing the Live Disc booting up?
Especially if you don't know it's live.

Well, our goal might be to "Get people using Fedora", but getting people to
use any Linux distro is still just as good, so I agree somewhat here.

Actually, I believe both Doom (III) and Quake 3 are open source, but
their maps are closed source.
So, if you have the CD, with the maps on it, you can legally play it on
linux...
UT had a port on linux.

Might want to take a closer look at Fedora Extras. The doom engine as
well as a package of Free GPL'ed maps are included in it.

I am running both (32-bit versions) on Fedora Core 3 x86-64.
So, if you have the CD, with the maps on it, you can legally play
it on linux... UT had a port on linux.
I am running the full x86-64 version of UT2K4 on Fedora Core 3
x86-64.
It kicks Windows' ass in performance on nVidia cards.
The x86-64 version of UT2K4 for Windows XP x64 is actually _slower_
than the 32-bit version, because of how WoW works in XP x64 (i.e.,
nearly all of XP x64 is still Win32).
