Hi all,
as you know I'm a new member of this group (I joined few days ago).
I see lots of wikipages about the activity and I'm a bit confused (I see
it's under revision), so I'm trying to summarize here the main activities
and goals.
Briefly:
1) spreading news;
2) contacts with LUG;
3) long term strategies;
4) dispel common myths;
5) keep fedora magazine;
6) maintaing updated marketing wikipages.
Think these are the major areas of interest where team is acting
(please do tell me if I'm mistaken).
1) spreading news: of course this team has various contacts with
press, magazines, public offices for sponsorship etc. in the whole
world.
There is a part of activity performed by itself and another with the
Ambassadors involvement. In this second case, Ambassadors should
have the opportunity to file into the mktg trac a request for sending to
any known contact in order to publicize his event in the area where will
be held.
2) contacts with LUGs: my own opinion here is different; here in Italy i
tried to keep contacts with the main lugs located in the North, but is a
lost cause. Often italian lugs are tied to their activities having a
specific interest in things not related to an operating system (there
are groups interested in hardware, in programming and so on), even
though they are using Linux. Besides every little town has his own lug,
so it's really difficult keep contacts with them. At last I think this
activity could be performed by country Ambassadors.
3) long term strategies: that's a good point. In this area we should
work with Ambassadors. Every year each region should produce a
budget plan (money, events, goals) that also should be managed by
mktg in order to find the best solution for promulgate the main of
them. For instance, here in Italy, in September will be held the
worldwide LibreOfiice Conference and I would been happy if Fedora
could be into it. Knowing the long terms budget of these events,
marketing could move to support them.
4) dispel commons myths: outdated IMHO.
5) keep fedora magazine: discussing with Mitzie, croberts and jzb, it's
not clear who have to do what. For example we could assign task for
each area of interest, avoiding the overcrowding in a specific sector of
the magazine. We can launch a call for research of news editors,
events editors, technical topics editors, blog collecting editors (I would
love to have a "Fedora inside" section) etc.
My article proposal is related to what EMEA Ambassador are doing
with the Tibetan contributors (interviews with both and personal
considerations).
6) maintainig updated marketing wikipages: I saw you're revisioning
the marketing pages, and in this direction I think that an index page
(which collect all the pages) should be required.
Sorry for boring (and for my English), but I want have clear ideas.

Thanks for asking for clarification. Like most FOSS projects, things are
*always* under revision here, I think. But you've done the best thing,
which is to ask the community for clarification. (And maybe you can help
with clarification as well.)

That does seem like something for the Ambassador teams to handle, but I
think marketing is the contact point for providing resources to
Ambassadors/LUGs to help promote Fedora.

I think maybe this would be better expressed as "Telling Fedora's story
and informing new users/contributors."

Usually people step up for tasks that interest them, it's hard to
assign things to volunteers if they're not already motivated to do those
things.
But perhaps we could start identifying areas of need and asking for
volunteers a little more aggressively.

considerations).

OK, I'm a moron :-) I looked at that page and saw Q1 first and assumed
that later quarters were missing. That's wrong - it goes by FYQ1-FYQ2,
etc. So it's up to date, AFAICT.

Yes, that's the way I understand; but in the Marketing wikipage [1] is listed this
point:
"Solicit Linux User Groups[1] members to use and contribute to Fedora. "
I'm also an Ambassador and this should be on their business.

Asking around for more info.
For instance take a look at the discussion page of last EMEA FAD [2]; there are lots of
event planned for the 2013. What I meant is that some of these should be handled
either by Ambassador and Marketing (the most importants).
In that case I would suggest in the next FAD EMEA I will attend (in December) that
someone of the Marketing will attend as well, in order to request budget also for
marketing (if it depends on EMEA) and coordinate the actions to be undertaken.

I think this is on Ambassador business, marketing shouldn't have contacts with users,
only with other sections of the Project.

It's easy, if we collect all the wikipages and fill in the category
marketing_something,
the index page will be created with all the links.

OK, should we edit that? Note that there's always going to be cross-over
between groups and as long as the work's getting done, I don't think
anyone will be upset if it's done with someone wearing a "marketing" hat
or "ambassador" hat. ;-)

But the materials provided by Marketing have a direction, and any
materials we're creating should stick to a story we want/need to convey
to users (and those will be consumed directly by users or by ambassadors
talking to users).

All the Marketing pages should be in the marketing category, We do not want to put every
wiki page in the marketing category. This can cause issues with the search function(which
I have been trying to fix :) ) and navigation if someone is browsing through the
category's. IE How to build a RPM, ARM Secret Decoder Ring. This could be a great
small project for someone who wants to help with some wiki gardening.

Yes, I was inaccurate; when I wrote "all the pages" I was referring to "all
the marketing pages", such as

should collect all

In order to make easier and avoiding users going round and round, we
could prettify
this page pointing it out in the main Marketing page
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing, not only in the footer.

Sure! but only in a operative way.
Marketing is different from ambassador for their kind of work.
Anyway you're right, this is a small issue.

I'm not completely sure about this.
Strategies need to be shared with ambassador, but reaching user
(target) in different ways.
IMHO in this case marketing is the glue between ambassadors and
users because we must prepare the ground for a specific event (press
releases, authorities etc. ), the ambassadors don't need to do
that as well; however we should be on their side for anything they
need.
In this way, yes we should dispel common myths, with press release
and with any other tool we have.

That's the goal!
In my opinion, in order to start assigning tasks to magazine editors, we
need to get more contributors before start doing that. But I support
this idea, cause we could add people in groups in the magazine
(WordPress supports that). And that could also do our life easier,
because each one would know on what to work on.

My opinion is near the one jzb said. It being understood that we need people, in order
to being more prolific in the research of volunteers, we should pick out tasks first.
In the discussion in websites[1] ML Matthew Miller proposed the merge of fedmag with
fp.o; in that way the magazine could take advantage of the fp.o visibility. Which way
the merge should be done I don't know. :-)
