Just a thought: if you are curious what people like to get out of a host agent for config management, have a look at facter[1], which is puppet's helper to gather information about a host.
I doubt there's all that much there that hasn't been covered for Matahari, but if nothing else, it's a godd example for some of the gyrations you need to go through to determine, e.g., the domain name of a system, in a portable manner.

Thanks for the info.
One thing to think about though. How portable should this agent be? Our initial goals are only concerned about Fedora/RHEL and Windows. I'm not opposed to community contributions to make the agent work on other distributions of Linux and/or other OSes, but for the time being Fedora/RHEL/Windows are going to be the primary targets.
