But it does seem like a good idea... if we can somehow make it super-easy to get stuff to make stuff with, more stuff will be made. However, I suspect the 'best practices' strategy is to post RPMs on RPMFusion, rather than to ask users to download from a SourceForge project. RPMFusion already hosts several packages with features unacceptable for official Fedora packages (like MP3 support). Of course, if RPMFusion also doesn't want to host our RPMs, then a SourceForge project is a good choice. Is it possible to set up an RPM repository on SourceForge? Christopher. Cool, I'm pretty sure I can get some stuff together. I'm working on getting some contributors for my side project (audiencesamples.sourceforge.net <http://audiencesamples.sourceforge.net>) for drum loops and single hit samples. As an update I found some opensource Impulse response files, They're not open to Fedora Standards, but their CC-SA so I can "master" them at a higher bitrate and throw an exciter on them for over/undertones, then release them under the audience sample library so we can package them. Which is good, because it took me over 30 minutes to download them just from one site and I think I have a lead on some more I can get. I found a windows based program that lets you generate digital IR data. Anyone know of anything like that linux side? I'll check some other places as well. Also, I think we can make an argument for things like drum loops to be included in the official repository anyway. At least if we package them all together. I think RPM is fundamentally unsuitable for managing large amounts of, lets call it "general content". It's purely designed for system-wide resources, mostly designed for executables, and I don't think that's really a good way to handle general content. It means stuff goes in /usr/share which means /usr/share will potentially grow without limit, which complicates partitioning. It means a user has to have administrator access to install, update and remove stuff. It means such content is subject to the Fedora release cycle, and update bureaucracy. While doing it through RPM is not completely unworkable, I think it can be done better. I think what we really need, in addition to RPM, is something more like iTunes/Steam/Google Play/Xbox Live/etc, something that will manage content inside a user's home directory rather than system wide. Everything would be stored somewhere under /home/, which is already expected to grow without limit. And administrator access would no longer be required. And such content would no longer be tied to the Fedora release cycle. If there's a need for such content to be available to more than one user, we should do it through some kind of shared user directory, stuff can go in something like /home/Public/{Music,Photos,Videos,etc}, and we add UI to make it easily accessible. Windows has been doing this kind of thing for a while now. This is an area where Fedora is WAY behind Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Valve and even Google.
