I would like to be able to record stuff from guitar,
midi-keyboard, microphone, DJ setup (via line input I suppose), and
then edit the results with the appropriate applications. Not all at
once, but maybe 1-3 inputs at a time. The ability to play in
real-time through the computer's output would be very important I
think as I reckon it's much harder to work any other way.
That's all I can think of right now. I currently have an SB Live
with the LiveDrive thing, which has all the inputs I need, but I am
thinking in terms of general system horsepower (RAM/CPU/disk etc).
I can only speak
for my computer, which works well for the needs you
describe.
AMD Phenom II X3 720
ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard (no longer sold)
4GB memory
7500RPM SATAII hard drives
I heard that "NewEgg" is having a sale on Socket AM3 CPUs.
Finding a supported sound card it's really a problem, I'll
just go
with M-Audio for that. But I would like to know if I need to get
one to do what I want.
M-AUDIO MobilePre USB works fine. I feel like the A->D
converter is
very important in a sound card, but I don't have proof, and
preliminary research at the McGill Audio Quality Lab suggests
otherwise.[0]
However, SoundBlaster hardware isn't designed for music so much as for
movies and games. If you're going to use it for music, you may want to
be more rigourous about your equalizer settings.
I'm curious what other list contributors think about this.
Christopher.
