Every round, we discuss career opportunities with the current cohort of
Outreachy interns. Many Outreachy interns don't know anyone who uses or
contributes to open source at their job. They may not be aware of how
much employers value experience working in open source.
That's where Outreachy mentors, coordinators, and alums come in! We
would love it if you could share how open source has helped your career.
There's two ways you can help out:
- Talk about your experiences with all interns via text chat
- Talk to an Outreachy intern one-on-one via video chat

We'll be discussing all the different ways you can advance your career
by participating in free software. The discussion will have two parts.
The first part of the discussion will be everyone brainstorming
different career paths in the technology industry and free software.
Many people have part-time or full-time jobs working in the technology
industry. Some people may be self-employed contractors, paid to work on
free software. People may have taken a while to find a job. They may
have participated in other internship programs, volunteer opportunities,
grants, or networked at conferences and events.
We encourage everyone to share their stories of how they advanced their
career. What did you try that didn't work? Where did you hear about
opportunities? How did you network and connect with people who helped
you advance your goals?
The second part of the discussion is brainstorming additional
opportunities to work on free software. We encourage both mentors and
interns to provide information about paid opportunities, but information
about unpaid opportunities is also welcome. Sharing information about
resource groups or job posting boards is also encouraged. If you don't
have info to share, that's fine too! We encourage you to participate.

If you want to talk to interns in a 1:1 video chat, email me privately.
We'll give current Outreachy interns a list of people they can request a
chat with. This helps Outreachy interns build their network and connect
to people outside their open source community. It's a great way to pay
it forward if you're an Outreachy alum!
Chats with interns are typically 30 minutes to an hour. You might be
approached by multiple interns, but it's okay to ask them to contact
someone else if you're too busy to meet multiple people.
