Don't downplay their efforts, most of their problems run for months and they
are very carefull about the results, after all is their reputation that is at
stake. :-)
Since the computational environment can so heterogeneous people follows the
path of least resistance and use tricks/techniques like this.
If you want consistent results, run a consistent platform.
Come on, that is not always practical or even possible. It really helps that
we have linux now, because the different proprietary unices before made this
even worse and a nightmare. :-)
