Summary: yum fails to resolve dependancies when dep moves from perl to perl-devel

------- Additional Comments From ville.skytta(a)iki.fi 2007-03-12 14:45 EST -------
I think a few cases like this have been hacked/worked around in the past using
versioned Obsoletes, eg. in this case possibly adding "Obsoletes: perl <
5.8.8-14" in perl-devel would trick yum into doing the right thing.

[Bug 231744] New: error: Couldn't exec perl-devel-prov: No such file or directory
by Red Hat Bugzilla
Please do not reply directly to this email. All additional
comments should be made in the comments box of this bug report.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=231744
Summary: error: Couldn't exec perl-devel-prov: No such file or
directory
Product: Fedora Core
Version: devel
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: medium
Priority: medium
Component: perl
AssignedTo: rnorwood(a)redhat.com
ReportedBy: redhat-bugzilla(a)linuxnetz.de
QAContact: dkl(a)redhat.com
CC: fedora-perl-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Description of problem:
When rebuilding perl-5.8.8-15, I'm ending up with:
--- snipp ---
[...]
Obsoletes: perl-Filter-Simple perl-Time-HiRes
Processing files: perl-devel-5.8.8-15
error: Couldn't exec /usr/src/rpm/BUILD/perl-devel-5.8.8/perl-devel-prov: No
such file or directory
getOutputFrom(): Broken pipe
--- snapp ---
But when rebuilding perl-5.8.8-13, stuff works as expected. When comparing -13
and -15, I can't see the reason for the problem. Any ideas?
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-5.8.8-15
How reproducible:
Everytime, see above.
Actual results:
No working rebuild.
Expected results:
Working rebuild.

Splitting out CPAN, Test::Simple, Test::Harness, ExtUtils::MakeMaker
by Ralf Corsepius
Hi,
Below is before-mentioned patch to perl.spec to split out
CPAN, Test::Simple, Test::Harness, ExtUtils::MakeMaker
from
perl-devel, I'd like to propose to be applied to perl.spec.
Advantages:
* The split-out allows such modules to be "alternatively supplied" from
separate/independent source packages.
* Improved fine-grained run-time deps.
Disadvantages:
* The split-out reveals BuildRequire-ment "sloppiness"es in current
perl-dist packages (So far, deps on "core" modules had been frowed
upon).
Implementation notes:
* The perl-<module> packages apply an epoch = 0 and a version
corresponding to their perl-dists, but apply the release number of the
main-perl package.
* To be able to implement this (Building several packages with different
versions and epochs from one single spec), one can't use %{version} and
%{epoch} because rpmbuild overrides them depending on the context inside
of a spec-file.
One has to resort to hard-code or %define them. I chose to use a %define
for the main package's version.
* I do not expect this spec to be free of bugs and oversights ;)
Feedback welcome.
Ralf
PS.: The patch below is against CVS and comprises all of Spot's an my
changes so far.

Final decision on perl-devel?
by Warren Togami
Has the final decision on whether perl-devel will split from perl during
F7 been made?
I hope that a final decision can be made and announced widely, because
currently this issue is causing confusion and doubt among maintainers.
