Fedora Server Trello
by Stephen Gallagher
In an effort to make Fedora Server fully buzzword-compliant, I have
created a Trello organization and board for keeping tabs on the open
tasks we need to complete. This will help us visualize what work we want
to get done, who is doing it and whether it's blocked.
The new board is public and located at
https://trello.com/b/Cxf1YFs7/fedora-server and the organization is
located at https://trello.com/fedoraserver
The purpose of this Trello board is to track those high-level issues
that apply to the Fedora Server project as a whole. Tracking of
individual project-level implementation should continue to be done
within those projects.
I've added a few existing tasks that we have on our plate.
Members of the Server SIG: if you're interested in following along (and
ideally picking up and working on a few tasks), please create a Trello
account and email me with your ID so that I can add you to the
organization. If you are sitting on the Server WG, please consider this
to be strongly encouraged.

Proposal for F22 Desktop Enviroment
by John Unland
Hello everyone,
I have been talking with Stephen about a DE for F22 and he has given
me a green light for proposing just that so here it goes:
Objective for proposal:
-To implement a desktop environment for F22 Server.
-Let the user have a choice for going to a DE or bare CLI.
-Have a GUI toolbox to diagnose hardware and networks.
Justification for proposal: The addition of a DE to F22 (x86) would
give system admins a choice of going to headless or use GUI interface.
Additionally many companies do not have the resources to have rack
cabinets or extra machines to access the Cockpit (Most of these
companies are small businesses). Also there are some software packages
that need a desktop interface to install such as Bitnami
(https://bitnami.com/) or Oracle Database, this not only applies to
open source software but proprietary software which mostly installs on
a GUI interface.
Sidenote: Even the Windows Server has a GUI and if you want to go to
just a plain CLI then you can do that. So why not Fedora Server?
Implementation: Wayland as a display server with KDE or Gnome (per
Server SIG's suggestions) as the default DE. Most of the applications
if not all will be removed including widgets and any fancy graphics.
Also this would be a great opportunity to apply some GUI tools such as
Wireshark to the DE.
Notes for KDE: KDE's "Netbook Workspace" might be a good starting
point to have since it's designed for "Quick-use", might be minimal
enough for a server environment.
Alternative DE: I would also like to propose a LXDE or LXQt as a
alternative DE because both KDE and Gnome are both heavy DE's in terms
of RAM and widgets / flair. Also there stripped enough that they will
do the job just as well as a heavily modified KDE and Gnome.
That is all, the floor is open to anyone. I am very open to
constructive criticism.

Self Reintroduction and Candidacy Announcement
by Dan Mossor
Good day fellow Server enthusiasts!
I am hereby announcing my second candidacy for the Server Working Group.
For those that didn't receive (or don't recall) the first self-intro I
did last April, here's a little background. I am a Systems Engineer
which, translated, means I make heterogeneous - and sometimes
"incompatible" - systems work together. I have been in IT since I was a
child, and my service in the United States Navy gave me the training and
experience I needed to make a pretty good career out of it. I've
returned to University to finally get a degree - I don't currently have
one and have reached the highest position I can without it.
I have been maintaining servers of one form or fashion since 1993. My
first systems were HPUX and Sun Solaris 2.0. I set up my first Red Hat
server in 1998 to serve as the DNS, web, ftp and file server for the
Commander, US Navy Central Command. While at that station, I was
appointed the Information Systems Security Officer, and was eventually
recognized as having the most secure network in Central Command in 2000.
I have maintained RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Solaris, BSD and
Windows servers in one flavor or another since 2003, and have been
slowly transitioning my current systems to a virtualized infrastructure
built on CentOS 7 and Openstack Juno. As part of that transition, I have
moved our file server from Windows to a Fedora 21 server with Samba,
pulling the data from a storage server via iSCSI. I've also deployed a
F21 server to fill the role as a local repository (with most of the
aforementioned operating systems hosted), and another server as our
first central identification and authorization using FreeIPA. I have
other instances in production serving double duty as the DNS server
(integrated with the FreeIPA server) and eJabberd for a local network IM
service.
On a separate network, I am running a mixed CentOS, Fedora and Windows
Active Directory environment for a development team. Within this closed
network, I run DNS, Apache, Redmine (formerly trac), eJabberd (formerly
Openfire), git (formerly svn), and multiple CentOS machines doing
nothing but virtual hosting for test instances built on KVM/QEMU. The
Windows portion of the network serves the sole duty of authentication
and identification, but I am using the Windows Services for Uniz to
provide some interoperability for that function.I am advocating moving
away from Windows based development environments to Fedora, so I can
eventually call my network a pure Linux network.
In regards to the Fedora community as a whole, I am a member of the QA
team, and dedicate most of my testing time to the Server and KDE
products (yes, I know KDE isn't a product....yet). I talk up Fedora and
it's abilities at any given opportunity, and have convinced more than a
few folks to switch to Fedora from Ubuntu. I like what the Server
product has become, and want to see it supplant Ubuntu as the
"reference" server for multiple projects (namely Openstack, among many).
I do what I can in my limited role to make this happen.
In short, I am a maintainer of servers, and use them in my daily duties
at my day job; I am an end-user of the product. My weakness in the
Fedora community, however, is that I am not a developer. It's not what I
do, I don't want to do it. I make the systems available for the
developers to do their job. To that end, I am very good at what I do.
I feel that I would bring insight and ideas to the WG as an end user of
the product - a voice that needs to be heard by any development project.
It wouldn't do very good to build a product that isn't wanted, or worse,
even needed.
Regards,
Dan

Self-introduction: Brandon Vincent
by Brandon Vincent
Hello,
My name is Brandon Vincent and I'm a system administrator who has a
immense passion for open source software and the free software
movement. While I'm mostly a GNU/Linux and BSD user, I also have a
good deal of experience with commercial UNIX systems.
My areas of expertise and research interests include security,
cryptography, and system hardening. I am presently a member of the
Fedora Security Team, where I work jointly with packagers and upstream
developers to ensure that security fixes reach Fedora packagers in a
timely manner.
In my opinion, the Fedora Project is one of the only GNU/Linux
distributions that provides an stable and reliable platform that can
be easily utilized to satisfy a wide variety of applications, from
individual workstations to large data centers. I'm sure many of the
SIGs have made this possible.
I'd love to become more involved with the Fedora Project. I have a lot
of free time on my hands which I would like to contribute to an
project and philosophy I care greatly about.
So without being too egotistical, I would like to self-nominate myself
for the open vacancy in the Fedora Server Working Group.
If anyone has any questions for me, or would like to start a
conversation about security or free software, my FAS/IRC username is
bvincent.

Self-introduction
by Dan Callaghan
Hi folks,
I'm Dan (dcallagh in FAS and on IRC). I've been a Fedora packager for
a while, and I'd like to help out the Server WG where I can.
My day job working on Beaker [1] puts me squarely in persona 3:
Traditional Application Developer. I also maintain a handful of
production Fedora servers so I guess I also fit persona 1: System
Administrator "Macgyver". (They are "production" in the sense that they
are Internet-facing and people care if they go down, but they are not
serving many users.)
I hesitate to nominate myself for a seat on the WG because I'm not sure
I can commit the time. Also I am ashamed to admit that I haven't even
tried out any of the neat features in F21 Server yet!
But either way you will find me lurking on this list in future :-)

At Today's meeting we discussed a perception issue with the WG and we
decided we should write something about ti to try to correct the shot.
Here is a first attempt at addressing the core arguments.

Open Seat on the Fedora Server Working Group
by Stephen Gallagher
This past week, David Strauss chose to step down from his position on
the Fedora Server Working Group, citing a lack of alignment with his
current work usage. The Fedora Server SIG would like to thank David for
his contributions up to this point and wish him well.
This means that there is currently a vacancy in the Fedora Server
Working Group. The Working Group is the nine-person volunteer body that
oversees the development, testing, release, documentation, marketing and
evangelism of the Fedora Server. Membership on this Working Group is a
moderate commitment requiring a participation of a minimum of two hours
a week, one hour of which being the (usually) weekly meeting.
Membership on the Fedora Server Working Group does not require you to be
a developer, tester or administrator. Anyone who is interested in
advancing any of the Fedora Server's goals[2] is eligible to
self-nominate. Document-writers, translators, Fedora Ambassadors,
end-users and anyone else can become a part of this team.
If you feel that you are interested in becoming more involved with the
Fedora Server, we encourage you to self-nominate by joining the Fedora
Server mailing list[1] and sending a self-introduction and nomination
email to that list. We will have open nominations from now until
Tuesday, December 9th, where we will vote on the new member at the
weekly meeting.
If you self-nominate but aren't selected to serve on the Working Group,
do not fret! The Server SIG is open to all and the Working Group will
always listen to your advice and concerns, so please stick around! While
the Working Group is the final authority and voting body when
disagreements come up or official decisions (like branding) need to be
made, we are not the only people working on the Fedora Server. The
Server SIG is small today, but growing. We would very much like to have
you join us.

Fedocal shows me that meeting time is 10:00pm (Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh). Now is 10:20pm
but I do not see any activity in #fedora-meeting-1 channel.
There may be an issue with Fedocal? (it should be 11:00pm)
Kind regards,
Tuan
