SCL on RH8!

Looks like we have a tentative strategy at work (not saying who I work for at the moment) to migrate some ancient systems from Red Hat 8 to something more modern by first migrating from system perl (5.8.0) to an scl-perl, which we are going to try and get up on RH8 and CentOS5. Then we can migrate the scripts to 5.16 at our leisure. scl-utils compiles and runs on RH8 (just needed to remove the -Wextra from the Makefile to get it to compile). I am now looking at SCL-izing perl 5.8.0 - to build with rpm 4.1.1 - aagh! Andrew

What is the status of software collections?

I have just discovered software collections, having stumbled across Jindrich Novy's "RHEL Packaging" presentation and the Fedora/RHEL "Software Collections Guide" manual. I had been trying to package up non-system versions of Perl and CPAN modules for work, using a very similar approach to scl. I would like to recommend that we adopt software collections, but apart from a flurry of activity in the middle of the year, everything has gone quiet. Is this a technology that has a future? Building SCL packages with mock

Eventually, I'd like to build Perl 5.16.x SCL packages with mock and/or koji. I've built several from the command line by just doing 'rpmbuild -ba SPECFILE --define "scl perl514"' but I'm not sure how to do that in a 'mock' environment. -- Doran L. spec2scl problems

After seeing some chatter about spec2scl on this list, I decided to install it and try it out.
