So, Tor and Privoxy work together to annonymise your internet usage by
forwarding your internet communications through a random series of
peers, also encrypting it along the way. This prevents certain forms of
traffic analysis from being able to determine what websites you are
visiting, as well prevents website from being able to record your
originating IP address etc. It is also a superb way for those suffering
from censorship to get around this and view the content of blocked
pages. Check out
http://www.torproject.org/ for better details.
I wouldn't recommend they be installed and enabled by default on any
system as the use of multiple proxies seriously slows down network
access.
It requires a little bit of configuration as it is currently packaged in
Fedora, requiring you to edit a text file for privoxy's configuration
and also to configure Firefox and your other internet facing
applications to use the proxy. Firefox can be done automatically with
the Tor Button extension, which I would suggest we install and use by
default in any spin of this sort. Other applications will require their
settings changed.
We could extend this spin to include other tools, similar to what the Polippix disc did
in Denmark.
Hope that answers your questions, but let me know if not and I'll try and do a better
job :p
