sssd performance on large domains

Hi, I'm wondering if there are any plans to improve sssd performance on large active directory domains (100k+ users, 40k+ groups), or if there are settings I am not aware of that can greatly improve performance, specifically for workstation use cases. Currently if I do not set "ignore_group_members = True" in sssd.conf, logins can take upwards of 6 minutes and "sssd_be" will max the CPU for up to 20 minutes after logon, which makes it a non-starter. The reason I want to allow group members to be seen is that I want certain domain groups to be able to perform elevated actions using polkit. If I ignore group members, polkit reports that the group is empty and so no one can elevate in the graphical environment. Ultimately this means that Linux workstations are at a severe disadvantage since they cannot be bound to the domain and have the normal set of access features users and IT expect from macOS or Windows. Distributions used: Ubuntu 16.04 (sssd 1.13.4-1ubuntu1.1), Ubuntu 16.10 (sssd 1.13.4-3) and Fedora 24 (sssd-1.13.4-3.fc24). All exhibit the same problems. I've also tried "ldap_group_nesting_level = 1" without seeing any noticeable improvement with respect to performance. Putting the database on /tmp isn't viable as these are workstations that will reboot semi-frequently, and I don't believe this is an I/O bound performance issue anyways. Thanks for your time.

ID Views for IPA ID Views for AD users inconsistent resolution

I didn't get a response in #sssd, so I figured I'll try here at the mail list. # rpm -q sssd ipa-server sssd-1.16.0-19.el7_5.5.x86_64 ipa-server-4.5.4-10.el7_5.3.x86_64 I've been scratching my head trying to resolve this particular issue. I'm having issues with AD users where when they login, they'll get the UID/GID assigned in the ID views correctly, but only some of the time. Other times, they won't get the id view assigned to them. This is all done in the default trust view. What makes this issue even more interesting is that out of my 6 domain controllers, sometimes it'll be one server out of the six that does it, sometimes it's two. But it's never the same ones, so it's difficult to track the particular issue down. What's even more interesting is this is not occurring with some users (like my own). I have yet to see it occur with my account or even the rest of my team's accounts. One of the things I tried to do is delete the ID views of the offending users and recreate them to no avail. I put SSSD into debug mode on the IPA servers and tried to get some relevant logs and such to try and figure this out. We are working with several kerberos-REALMS and are trying to get our clients to store their kerberos tickets in a DIRECTORY. This seems to work nicely for clients not authenticating at login, with the following configuration set in /etc/krb5.conf. ... For clients using sssd for login, I want to set up the same behavior. But when I attempt to login the system creates an "/tmp/krb5cc_${UiD}" - but here the directory don't get the excutable bit set (that is the directory get 0600-permission), and the login fails. In the man-page from Debian-buster (sssd-version: 1.16.3), there are to settings that seems to regulate this behaviour : krb5_ccachedir (string) Directory to store credential caches. All the substitution sequences of krb5_ccname_template can be used here, too, except %d and %P. The directory is created as private and owned by the user, with permissions set to 0700. Default: /tmp krb5_ccname_template (string) Location of the user's credential cache. Three credential cache types are currently supported: "FILE", "DIR" and "KEYRING:persistent". The cache can be specified either as TYPE:RESIDUAL, or as an absolute path, which implies the "FILE" type. In the template, the following sequences are substituted: [...] If the template ends with 'XXXXXX' mkstemp(3) is used to create a unique filename in a safe way. When using KEYRING types, the only supported mechanism is "KEYRING:persistent:%U", which uses the Linux kernel keyring to store credentials on a per-UID basis. This is also the recommended choice, as it is the most secure and predictable method. The default value for the credential cache name is sourced from the profile stored in the system wide krb5.conf configuration file in the [libdefaults] section. The option name is default_ccache_name. See krb5.conf(5)'s PARAMETER EXPANSION paragraph for additional information on the expansion format defined by krb5.conf. NOTE: Please be aware that libkrb5 ccache expansion template from krb5.conf(5) uses different expansion sequences than SSSD. Default: (from libkrb5) ... I have tried to both set and unset, the two parameters in question like this: krb5_ccachedir = /tmp/krb5cc_%U krb5_ccname_template = DIR: %d krb5_ccname_template = DIR:%d/krb5cc_%U_XXXXXX But the configuration-options seems to be ignored, no matter what I do, and I have the same behavior: A non-executable directory is created and the user is unable to login. If I set the +x bit on the directory manually as the root-user, everything works.

The authentication is against a windows AD. I have working Samba AD server with linux and windows members. Windows machines are fine with the dynamic DNS updates. I'd like to have that for my linux machines too. I'm already using SSSD to join them to the AD domain, so I'm wondering if it's possible to use dyndns with the samba_dlz module? Has anyone tried it yet?

The reason I ask is because I use a bunch of storage appliances that offer Secure-NFS (NETAPP, EMC UNITY, etc.), but they only support NIS, IDMU, RFC2307, and RFC2307bis style Identity Mapping, all of which require manual assignment of UID/GID numbers to objects in LDAP, which is untenable for large environments. Microsoft even removed Unix Attribute editor from their LDAP GUI for the RFC2307 attributes in Windows Server 2016 to push people away from using rfc2307. I would like to be able to provide a link to an RFC or design document describing the SSSD ID Mapping algorithm so that these 3rd party vendors can incorporate an identical identity mapping algorithm into their products, so that I can use their Secure-NFS product in conjunction with sssd and have the uid and gid numbers match up with the other Linux hosts in our environment.

Hi, I've implemented sssd with id, auth and access provider as ldap. So I am using a binding account and didn't joined the domain with the server. In general everything works. Only members of mentioned SG within the sssd.conf can login to the server, just as I wish to. However, as sudo user I can run something as following sudo su - UserThatIsNotAllowed So I (a sudo user) can switch to any user that is within the search base I've specified in the sssd.conf But these users are not allowed to use the server. I understand that not the user himself is logging in but I actually don't want sudo users to be able to switch to users that aren't allowed on the server. I'd like that it is only allowed to switch to users that are allowed on the server on local accounts of course. Is this a normal behaviour? Can it be changed? Thank you! Jannis

Is it possible to use sssd-ldap (1.16.4-21, CentOS 7.7) with FreeIPA server (4.6.5-11, CentOS 7.7) and have password policy (ldap_access_order=ppolicy) and also account expiration (ldap_account_expire_policy = ipa)? It’s implied that IPA works as why else would “ipa” be an option to ldap_account_expire_policy? I’m trying this in my lab; can’t get it to work. Also not perfectly clear from the manual is how to use pwd_expire_policy_reject, pwd_expire_policy_warn, pwd_expire_policy_renew. In the manual, it is written: "Also 'ldap_pwd_policy' must be set to an appropriate password policy.” What should ldap_pwd_policy be set to for an IPA server? The docs also say, “for ldap_account_expire_policy=rhds, ipa, 389ds: use the value of ldap_ns_account_lock to check if access is allowed or not.” On my FreeIPA server, I don’t see the ldap_ns_account_lock attribute set for expired accounts. Either my reading is deficient or the documentation is. I’d be happy to contribute if I understood. Does anyone have any tips? thanks, Chris Paul

No group information displaying and slow persformance while implementing sssd ldap authentication

Hi! I am trying to authentticate my ubuntu users via Active directory and also autofs mounting. May be I am doing something wrong or missing some key attributes but I checked it from last couple of days and decided to write. I have configured my sssd.conf and using ldaps for communication. When I build sssd from source, I specify "--with-crypto=libcrypto" during configure stage, however during the build and install stage, sssd is linked with both libcrypto.so and libnss3.so+libnssutil3.so Is there a way to completely disable all Mozilla NSS libraries with sssd?

Provider clarifications

Hi, I've got a question that seems pretty trivial to me so it feels like I'm missing something obvious. I know that there are different provider types: id, auth, chpass, access (and maybe others) But what I don't quite understand is what they actually do. The documentation says: id -> "The identification provider" auth -> "The authentication provider" access -> "The access control provider" chpass -> "The provider which should handle change password operations for the domain." (The first three are not very helpful ;-) ) I understand chpass and I can make a guess about the others but I'm not sure: id: Just returns information about some object auth: Validates credentials for an object access: Checks authorization? But I'm very vague on the details. Is there any more information I can refer to? What are the differences/can anyone point me at an API description or some other documentation? One very specific question for example: What does the krb5 auth mean? Does it retrieve a ticket and try to decrypt that? Thank you! Cheers, Lars

managing authorization without AD/LDAP

Hello, I have a use case of ssh authentication to some server which for various reasons (one of them being network isolation) cannot access to Directory. With ssh I can use ssh certificates to do the authentication part "offline" without the need for the server to access any centralized service. But I still need LDAP connexion to get directory information (numeric uid, groups, etc.) I would like a mechanic which allows to transmit this information along with the connexion initiation. For example the ssh certificate could have some extension options like uid(a)example.com=1234 and groups(a)example.com=wheel,admin,mygroup and this certificate would create the corresponding entries in SSSD in passwd and groups databases which would be valid for the duration of the certificate. Do anyone knows of such a setup or have any pointer to similar ideas ? Do you think it would be possible for SSSD to be extended to support this use case ? Would it be easy to implement ? (a bunch of AuthorizedKeyCommand shell scripts interacting with SSSD D-Bus interface would suit me) François

Realm permit with bogus AD domain disallows any subsequent legal login

All, Another engineer fat-fingered a ‘realm permit’ invocation and discovered this problem. Brought this to my attention. (This is on RHEL7). We are using the simple access provider in sssd.conf. So we have simple_allow_groups and simple_allow_users lines in sssd.conf: Example allow lines: simple_allow_groups = amerlinuxeng(a)amer.company.com, amerlinuxengtfssupt(a)amer.company.com, amerlinuxsup(a)amer.company.com, amerlnxsvcdelauttfs(a)amer.company.com, fnms_ops(a)amer.company.com, gbllinuxsuppw(a)amer.company.com, pptsupportpac(a)amer.company.com, scheduling_global(a)amer.company.com, unv_legato_admins(a)amer.company.com, zabbix-support(a)amer.company.com, apaclinuxeng(a)apac.company.com, apaclinuxsup(a)apac.company.com, emealinuxeng(a)emea.company.com, emealinuxsup(a)emea.company.com, vra_users(a)amer.company.com simple_allow_users = processdaceaccount(a)amer.company.com, processdisco05(a)amer.company.com, processdisco06a(a)amer.company.com, processehcprofiler(a)amer.company.com, processfoglight(a)amer.company.com, svc_prdprofoglight01(a)amer.company.com, john2_nolan(a)emea.company.com <john2_nolan(a)emea.dell.com> amer.company.com and emea.company.com are legal AD child domains. (& my login is legal – I’m a member of a couple of these permitted AD groups.) This is for a legal login. If I remove the bogus entries, access of legal logins again succeeds. realm permit -x processdaceaccount(a)us.company.com <processdaceaccount(a)us.dell.com> realm permit -g -x vra_users(a)us.company.com <vra_users(a)us.dell.com> Now my legal login again succeeds. Exclude users who will become root from SSSD control

Hi all, I have a requirement where my client is requesting to exclude all users who will become root (by sudo) out of SSSD control. The way I think it is possible is to not add those users into the sudo rule. Or create those users on the linux side and not keep them on AD at all. Has anyone encountered something like this? I am trying to gather information as to why they need this. In the meantime if anyone knows how to achieve this, it would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Using Multiple Matchrules

I have a use case with a local domain (files) that requires a one-to-many relationship between a Linux user account and alternate smartcard token user names, i.e., I have multiple users with individual smartcards that need to be able to authenticate to a single Linux user account. Based on the sssd documentation and my observation, the sssd.conf file only matches the last matchrule supplied. This appears to force a one-to-one relationship between a Linux user account and a smartcard token user name. Is there a way to create a matchrule (or rules) that will allow the use of multiple smartcards with a single Linux user account? Thanks.
