I can configure sssd to use ldap as an id provider, and AD (krb5) as auth provider, but I guess this poses problems for some web applications, because some of these don't know anything about krb and will look for userPassword instead?

It depends on the applications. Are they using apache? If so mod_auth_kerb is the module to add.
Also there have been cases when the apache with mod_auth_krb was used as a proxy in front of the application to resolve a similar issue.
