People,
I have been using Sway for a quite a while now via a KDE Live install but when I did a clean install recently from the new Live Sway ISO, generally everything went pretty well - except now the Win-d hot key does not allow me type a command at the top of screen. I presume there is a way to turn this on but it should be on by default?
Thanks,
Phil.
Hi, I would expect that you have an issue with a launcher. Could you please check journal for error messages?
Best Regards, Jirka

Thanks for responding! I did:
journalctl > t[1 or 2]
before and after doing:
Win-d
but there was no diff between t1 and t2.
- is that what you meant me to check?
Thanks,
Phil.

Hi,
yes, that means no error was raised.
I wonder, after reading your question again I see that you complain that it doesn't work at the top of the screen. What that means exactly. Does that mean that other than when you have cursor at the top it works fine and what exactly is the "top"?

Before the fresh install, after I used "Win-d", a command-line would appear at the top of the screen on a line under the WayBar virtual desktops - with a string of commands following - and, as I typed eg "kcalc", the number of command strings would decrease until only "kcalc" remained in the list ie, if the command became unique enough, say with "kca", you could then just hit ENTER to execute the command.
Does that make sense?
Thanks!
Phil.

If you didn't tried that already you can try to run the application launcher manually
rofi -terminal 'foot' -show combi -combi-modes drun
You can find more info in /etc/sway/config, however if you already have your configuration which is stored in ~/.config/sway/config than the /etc/sway/config is not used and you need to add your binding to your configuration.

Yes, that does work but it pops up a new window - what I would prefer is what I had before - I think it must be a WayBar feature? - I will look into that . .

I have not had a chance to try out the ISO, just following the list out of curiosity, but based on your earlier description you were probably using either dmenu or bemenu. It's not a feature of waybar, and it is spawning a new window of sorts, just in the shape of a bar at the top of the screen overlapping with your panel. If the key combo to launch it is not working, the program could be missing or the keybind in the config could be missing, but on a fresh ISO that should be pre-configured, that does sound odd. It sounds like you can get a terminal open at least, so you could check if dmenu or bemenu are installed and take a look at the Sway config file to see what's wrong.
It's also possible rofi has a mode that looks like dmenu depending on the arguments you give it, but I don't remember if this is the case.

YES! - you are correct! - neither was installed and as soon I installed dmenu, Win-d started working - I will also investigate bemenu and configs etc - thanks!

Interesting! - I have never come across anything like that in the pre-Sway Dark Ages . .
If the key combo to launch it is not working, the program could be missing or the keybind in the config could be missing, but on a fresh ISO that should be pre-configured, that does sound odd.
Happy to keep testing if there is an issue with the current ISO or if people want to create new ones for testing . .
It sounds like you can get a terminal open at least, so you could check if dmenu or bemenu are installed and take a look at the Sway config file to see what's wrong.
Oh after the clean install from the LiveUSB I got back almost straight away to my full operation mode with 10 virtual desktops, kitty, ranger etc etc - I just couldn't work out the Win-d thing . .
It's also possible rofi has a mode that looks like dmenu depending on the arguments you give it, but I don't remember if this is the case.
When I saw rofi pop up during the install to hard disk, I did think that maybe that had been an upgrade and while that might be convenient for some situations, I really wanted the one line CLI . .
Thanks again! - I learn a bit more . . I love Sway . .
