by Josh Philbin
Hi there dunno if this is where I should be posting this problem. I
just burned FC3 to CD my disk 1 and 3 do not work. Tried to burn again
and same thing. I am using sony media 700MB and a Sony CD writer.

Features for FC4
by Mark Haney
I know it's probably a bit early, but does anyone have a comprehensive
set of features/ideas for FC4? So far FC3 is by far the best distro out
there, but surely there's been some thought to what's next. Plus, I'd
love to help out with it in any way I can, but time prohibits real
development, is there any need for documentation?

No sound on FC2 to FC3T3 update... artsd going nuts
by Kim Lux
Sound doesn't work on my laptop with FC3T3. It did with FC2.
Here is the vital info:
On login I get this message:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
Sometimes after login I get this message:
Sound server fatal error:
cpu overload, aborting
In hwbrowser I find:
Sound cards: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
Manufacturer: Unknown
Driver: snd-intel8x0
If I run system-config-sound:
The following audio device was detected:
<blurb here, same as hwbrowser>
When I press "Play Test Sound" the application hangs.
If I run tops, I find that artsd hogs the cpu cycles like crazy.
In dmesg everything looks normal as far as errors go. There doesn't
appear to be a driver loaded for sound. Here is the only stuff I see
that might be related to sound:
ICH5: chipset revision 2
ICH5: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

All other logs are clean.
In /etc, I have a asound.state and an alsa dir.
asound.state looks normal and only contains stuff about mixer.
asound.conf is not present.
in /etc/alsa, I have alsa.conf. There is nothing special in it.

I figured out how to turn off aRts: Start->Control Center -> Sound and
Multi.->Sound System-> General. Turn off the "Enable the Sound System"
option.
I also tried changing the audio device on the Hardware tab to alsa,
with no effect.
I've update to kernel 2.6.9-1.643 and I've updated alsa to 1.0.6-3.
Any advice ? How do I troubleshoot this ?

swig and subversion
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
Can someone please rebuild subversion? A standard update has to exclude
swig as subversion relies on older libraries.

More FC3 (and rawhide) issues.
by Noah Silva [Mailing list]
Forgot some ...
a. I have had performance problems and found some applications using an
ENORMOUS amount of memory. Evolution was taking nearly 400mb at one
point, and epiphany wasn't much better. I know hot to use top and
gnome-system-monitor and restart things, but some people would just wonder
why their system gets so unbelievably slow... Restarting them helps fix
the problem, at least for a while. I may have a lot of mail, but jeez...
I can't be the only one who's noticed this.
b. In evolution, in the calendar, the scrolling seems not to work right.
It won't scroll until I go 4 or 5 blocks (in the month view) and then it
will suddenly jump. Should this be files with Novell or Redhat? This
seems to happen not on my rawhide machine. (Also sometimes entries don't
update properly until restarting evo.)
thanks,
Noah SILVA

Re: KVM mouse even worse
by Reg Clemens
Since I have never seen ANY of the problems mentioned, I have
to assume the problem is with the KVM switch itself.
I had an old 'rotary switch' KVM, and indeed you had to have
it switched to the booting machine.
I replaced it with a ConnectGear (electronic) KVM and all the
problems went away... I have to assume the electronic KVM
makes it 'look' to the OS as if there is a keyboard/mouse
there on all 4 ports, independent of which one you are switched to.

fedora core 3 base livecd with kde3.3.1, gnome2.8 etc. ...
by Dirk Westfal
Hello,
don`t know if someone here is interested, so i keep this short :
finished a livecd based on core 3 with kde & gnome, firefox& thunderbird,
different laguage profiles (english, german, french, italian), security tools
(ethereal, nmap, nessus etc.). Uses gdm as login manager, kde is default
desktop. Auto save/restore of user sessions from usb storage in kde - need
some help to make this work in gnome ...
Also contains fedora network install kernel/initrd.image from boot.iso.
Takes ~1-3 minutes to load.

RE: /usr has vanished
by gslink
There is a bug related to this in FC3. If you are root and change group
membership from root to something else and then give rw and execute
permission to everyone and the directory is a partition then the
directory will usually appear empty. If you write anything into that
directory before rebooting then the directory is messed up. If you
reboot first no harm is done. Is this what happened?

KVM mouse even worse
by Sean Bruno
It seems like the issues with mice and KVM switch boxes has gotten worse
under FC3.
Under FC2 the mouse would get confused when switching between different
machines and I would have to "ctrl-alt-f1" and then "ctrl-alt-f7" to
reset the mouse back to a useable state.
Now under FC3, this "workaround" no longer compensates for the issue.
To get the mouse back, I have to disconnect the mouse(physically) and
reconnect it. Does this sound like something that has already been
reported?
