Installing Oracle on FC3T3
by Mailing List
Hi,
I am trying to install oracle (8i, 9i and 10i) on FC3T3.
I am running into various problems with gcc versions and jdk versions..
Is there anybody who has successfully installed any oracle version on FC3T3?
I got Oracle 9 and 10 working on FC1 before...

Upgrading
by gslink
Our biggest problem with upgrading is that it is not always clear when a
test distribution has been changed. This is especially true with things
like release candidates. We tried FC3-RC2 and found that installing
additional packages on the upgraded system caused a crash in anaconda.
This appears to have been fixed but it is hard to tell from the
numbering. I suggest that any posted directory contain a readme file
that says something like "This is FC3-RC2.01". Increment the number
after the decimal every time a package is upgraded or replaced. This
will make it obvious what the level is. If an upgrade hasn't yet gotten
posted to a mirror this will show it.

Re: Gnome can not start
by Darek Borkowski
I try with failsafe session but cannot get output from strace in file
because straced gnome-session commnads never ends. So i get empty
output file.
I tried
strace -ttt gnome-session > out.txt
and
strace -ttt gnome-session -o out.txt
but in each case out.txt has 0 bytes length after CTRL+C.
Tried to find option for breaking tracing in man strace, but cannot find one.

RC5: What Happened To vncviewer?
by Robert L Cochran
I thought the vnc and vnc-server packages are installed by default? I
was mystified earlier today when I couldn't find "vnc" in any of the
"Applications" dropdown categories for RC5. It looks like vnc-server is
installed by default, but not vnc which has the vncviewer functionality.

Gnome can not start
by Darek Borkowski
Hi,
there are MANY ways to reach point where gnome does not load ofter
logging in gdm. This problem is of the HIGHEST SEVERITY, as it
dissallow any gnome using. The problem was signalized by me in few
times bugzilla.redhat.com, but it seems all those bugs remain as NEW
?!?!
(bug numbers 134169, 134212, 136081, 137778, 124078)
I found some (brutal force) methods to deal with problem. One of them
is removing ~/.gnome2/session (editing this file deos not help).
Another method is removing whole ~/.gnome2 directory.
Where are gnome-session developers. Is this so hard to add some time
of software watchdog waiting for loaded gnome. If the gnome deos not
load then restart gnome session with default parameters. Now the user
have to remove some config files by hand. Many of users does not even
know where are these files.

Gnome can not start continued
by Darek Borkowski
I would like to add that same problem were present in Gnome 2.4, 2.6
and 2.8 and even better (RedHatLinux 9, FC1, FC2 and now FC3).
I have seen problem on 4 different computers
(Pentium 2 with 192 MB RAM and S3 Trio gfx,
P4HT 2.4GHz with 1 GB ram, ASUS P4P800 Deluxe, ATI 9100 with standard
xorg driver,
P4 2.1 GHz, Gigabyte 8I-EXP with 512 MB ram and ATI 9000 PRO with ATI
binary driver,
Toshiba Satellite 1135-S1554 with PentiumM 2.2 GHz, 512 MB ram and
Intel 85x gfx).
With such basic lack of functionality I wonder if I will still use
Gnome (besides I really like Gnome). I have never seen not starting
KDE for example.

Re: Nvidia Riva 128
by Chris Tencati
Hi,
first, sorry if this posts to a new thread, but I accidentally deleted the
mail so I had to make a new one.
Anyway, it's fairly likely that your problem isn't what was mentioned. I
don't know about that specific card, but the nvidia installer doesn't
'finish' properly with newer fedora installs...not sure if this is a problem
with the installer or with fedora, though I'm inclined to believe it's
because fedora keeps changing all the init systems. Basically the installer
doesn't actually setup automatic loading of the kernel module. So if you
have your xorg.conf file correctly setup to use the nvidia drivers, but the
module isn't loaded, it dies with the "no screens" message. I've noticed a
*lot* of people on nvidia's linux forums have had this problem, and I
finally got them to sticky a post about this cause.
Boot into terminal mode, and before you do startx, try 'lsmod |grep nvidia'.
If the module is loaded, then you should start screwing with the screen
configs etc, but I wouldn't start with that until you're sure it's the
problem :)
Assuming that the module is not loaded, do 'modprobe nvidia' and add that
line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local anywhere so it will be loaded automatically on
boot.
I know FC2 and prior set it up for you properly (even the same version
drivers), so I'm pretty sure that whatever init file(s) the installer
modifies are no longer used/present in newer versions of Fedora.
Unfortunately which files it uses at any given time seems to change weekly
:-\

samba configuration utility does not load up
by Roman Toledo
I've been testing core 3 test 3 2.92 for a month now and never got
around to using the samba configuration app that is under the
menu > system settings > server settings > samba.
this ystem is up2date as of 10/31/04. I used the above menu to load up
the
"services" app to make sure smb and windbind are running in level 3 ,
4, and 5 (not sure if level 4 should as I don't know much about that
level)
I made sure my sons machine is running and made sure samba is running
on it, (suse 9.1) it can not see my machine and when I start konqueror
in my machine and type smb:// his machines name it comes back with it
can not find it.
I also got a message when I clicked on local networks saying I needed
lisa, so I opened a terminal and started lisa, now I see a bunch of
local 127.x.x.x and see my box FED777 but do not see my son's.
I'm not sure If I've done something to break it(probably), since I've
spent my time learnig to properly compile the kernel so I could then
compile the raid card driver's and read and write to it(ntfs was a
disappointment can't write to it)
last I've done a lot of reading from the google pages and man samba and
have learned a lot even how to mount and dismount NTFS volumes in
Windows, something totally unknown to me until today ;) but have not
succeeded in fixing samba. I need to share my printer for the wife and
son's machine.
all suggestions are deeply appreciated and my appologies for the long
and winding story ;)
