Core Duo and Linux - Install fails
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
FC6T3 x86_64 install gets stuck at "Loading ata_piix driver".
None of the Linux distros I've tried can find the CDROM.
System is a Core Duo MSI P965 Neo with an IDE Lite-on optical drive.
Windows XP installs normally, as do both 32 and 64 bit Vista RC1.

FC5 to Rawhide 20060927: No go.
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
I've just tried to upgrade a fully updated vmware image of FC5 to
yesterday's rawhide and it killed my FC5. (thank God for vmware's
snapshots ;))
And now for the bugs:
1. Anaconda failed to detect the previous /boot partition and mount
it. It had to be done manually. (AFAICS there's no GUI fo it during an
upgrade - it must be done using console)
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=208093
2. I entered the wrong URL into the HTTP server address, Anaconda
failed to detect the mistake and crashed when it tried to download
files. (Instead of giving me an option to correct the URL)
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=208094
3. Killer bug: Anaconda throws an exception while trying to upgrade an
existing grub.conf configuration. (After two hours of HTTP install :-(
)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=208193
This is the third time I'm trying to upgrade this FC5 setup (Test2,
Test3, Rawhide) and I've yet to get a working test/rawhide image out
of it.
I'm know it has been said (and ruled out) before, but considering how
close FC6-release date is, wouldn't be wise to delay the release by a
couple of weeks and give Anaconda some time to mature? (Maybe add some
time to release Test4?)

Dependencies of Firefox
by Havard Rast Blok
Hi,
After updating to 1.5.0.7-1.fc5 (on a rather pristine FC5 installation)
I got the wildly reported error when trying to access a site over HTTPS:
Unexpected response from server
Firefox doesn't know how to communicate with the server.
* Check to make sure your system has the Personal Security
Manager installed.
After much googling, grumbling and yumming, I finally got it working
with these updates (I'm not sure if the openssl was necessary):
yum list firefox nss openssl mod_ssl
firefox.i386 1.5.0.7-1.fc5
mod_ssl.i386 1:2.2.2-1.2
nss.i386 3.11.3-0.5.fc5
openssl.i686 0.9.8a-5.3
My question is now, why are these packages not updated by yum as
dependencies of firefox? Surely, accessing https sites is a rather
common task. Even my mom needs this.
Unfortunately, I've not had the time to check if this has changed in FC6
Test 3.
Regards,
Havard

autoconf breakage on x86_64.
by Sam Varshavchik
I don't know the right way to fix this, but something is definitely broken;
and something needs to be fixed, one way or the other. The question is what
exactly needs to be fixed.
Consider something like this:
LIBS="-lresolv $LIBS"
AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC(res_query, AC_MSG_RESULT(yes), AC_MSG_RESULT(no))
Here's what happens on x86_64:
gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -I.. -I./.. conftest.c -lresolv >&5
/tmp/ccW7EeDX.o(.text+0x7): In function `main':
/home/mrsam/src/courier/authlib/configure:5160: undefined reference to
`res_query'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:5147: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
[ blah blah blah ]
| /* We use char because int might match the return type of a gcc2
| builtin and then its argument prototype would still apply. */
| char res_query ();
| int
| main ()
| {
| res_query ();
| ;
| return 0;
| }
The same exact test on FC1 x86 will work.
The reason appears to be that you have to #include <resolv.conf> on x86_64
in order to succesfully pull res_query() out of libresolv.so. You don't
need to do this on x86, and the test program generated by AC_TRY_LINK_FUNC
does not include any headers, but uses a manual prototype.
So, what now?

compiz themes (cgwd & themes)
by Steven Haigh
Has anyone found a copy of cgwd that works with the latest rawhide?
I found an RPM of cgwd, but it was built against libdbus-1.so.2 which
doesn't seem to exist in rawhide...
This should probably be added to rawhide if we're going to make compiz
available....

PATA DMA is disabled
by Robert M. Albrecht
Hi,
2.6.18 (2647) did not fix the pata dma-problem:
[root@helios ~]# hdparm -d /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
using_dma = 0 (off)
[root@helios ~]# hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)
[root@helios ~]#
Or do I have to do some configuration change ?

You need a new enough kernel to handle the ICH6M SATA and PATA together
nicely
and the devices not to be in compatibility mode.
Alternatively build 2.6.18-rc4-mm2 and select the Intel PIIX/ICH driver from
that without the "old IDE" PIIX driver and it should grab all the
devices and
put them under /dev/sda /dev/sr0 etc using libata.
