FC6 "modprobe loop" deadlock?
by Jan Andrejkovic
Hello,
I have FC6 with default latest kernel and I configured encrypted swap (using
/etc/crypttab). Now when I need to use losetup to "mount" floppy disk image
as a loop device,
I should have module loop loaded first.
When I try "modprobe loop" modprobe hangs and starts to spawn its
copies, and then I see more and more modprobe processes eating all my
CPU time and swap space.
The only thing which saves my system from crash is to cancel the
modprobe or if I do "killall modprobe".
However I discovered that I can use insmod and it is working fine (also
losetup is fine) - so this is kind of a workaround:
# /sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.6.20-1.2952.fc6/kernel/drivers/block/loop.ko
#
Once the module loop.ko is in the loaded, modprobe does not have a problem
(of course):
# /sbin/modprobe loop
#
However when I remove the loop.ko (rmmod loop), modprobe has a problem
again.
I have the same problem with both below kernels:
2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
2.6.20-1.2944.fc6
Am I doing something wrong here or is it a bug?
My hardware is VIA C7 and below you can find strace and lsmod outputs.
Thank you very much,
Jan
PS: Here are mentioned outputs::

hdparm -T 2 times slower on F7t4
by Doncho N. Gunchev
Is someone else seeing this?
F7t4# hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 2206 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1104.24 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 102 MB in 3.03 seconds = 33.68 MB/sec
FC6# hdparm -tT /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing cached reads: 4576 MB in 2.00 seconds = 2290.99 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 102 MB in 3.01 seconds = 33.86 MB/sec
Is this a real problem?

From Rawhide to Moonshine
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Dear friends,
I am sure some one has asked this before, but I can not find it: If
I am on F6.93 Rawhide with regular updates and want to shift to F7
Moonshine, what do I need to do? Will it update automatically into the
release version, or will I continue on Rawhide if I do not interfere
with the updates? If I want to end up with the F7 Moonshine release
version, do I need to: (a) do nothing, let the updater do its job (b)
modify the updater (c) boot from an install disk (d) take some other
action. Thanks!
Take care
Oliver

A problem with db4 killed my rpm database with F7
by Doncho N. Gunchev
I filled bug # 242092 for this, but in short after some db4(3?) errors
with rpm/yum my rpm package database now has only about 151
package (were 1466). I got in this situation after yum shell (errors);
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db.*; rpm --rebuilddb (errors); rpm --rebuilddb.
This trick worked fine for me from RH9 till now (2-3 times every
year). (The old nptl + db4 problem I think).
I can probably download all packages again (/var/log/rpmpkgs)
and 'rpm -ihv --justdb' them or reinstall. Any suggestions?
btw: everything still works, except for yum (no fedora-release in
the rpm db and thus no info what to search).

DVD only?
by Knute Johnson
I just went to start downloading F7 torrent and all I could find was
a DVD or a single CD live option. Are there not CDs for the complete
install?
I couldn't get the live CD to work on the machines that I use for my
mail server and those machines don't have DVD drives.
Thanks,

archive-teleconstructor.py - use your previous downloads to save bandwidth getting newer releases
by Development discussions related to Fedora
Hi All,
Firstly, if you feel this is not the appropriate list, can you please
suggest another ;)
As mentioned in a few places, and with thanks to responses received from
a few people who provided an "iso-info" run for iso files I didn't have
yet, I have got to an operational state of a program I'm calling:
archive-teleconstructor.py
The idea is to save a heap of download time and capacity when you know
that a heap of files included in a download archive {iso at this stage}
are already present on your disk or mountable media. The second
requirement is that the download is presented in a format that allows
for partial downloading and detection of correct data before actual
download. This means rsync and bittorrent {tested with azureus}.
It is written in python and included as an attachment, along with some
iso-info files made by Bruno for fedora 7 dvd and rescue discs.
For example, the F-7-i386-rescuecd.iso can be constructed from the
content of F-7-i386-DVD.iso, and an rsync that took less than a minute
{my connection speed might be reasonable, but none of the mirrors I have
tested with are very fast at the moment}. The stats for that process showed:
error: verify_files: could not find local files for: 3 files
verify_files: found local files for: 22 files
I used rsync to finish the download. Comparing the constructed iso
before and after the rsync completed the download:
overall statistics: identical:different 101,499,602: 9,518 {99.9905%}
What this says is that after construct only 9518 bytes where different
from the final file {which was tested again with sha1sum}.
In fact, it would be easy to include such a program on the DVD.iso, that
builds the rescue cd on demand {with very little extra data required -
unlike jigdo that seems to need large {250MB} template files for DVD
sized downloads}.
To get the F-7-i386-DVD.iso in the first place, I provided as local
files the mounted f7t3 and f7t4 isos, and my most recent development
download folder. Because it is quite difficult at the moment to get a
responsive rsync server, I completed the download with azureus. The
completion jumped from 1% to about 49% after running the program.
For instructions see the --help and the example near the bottom of the code.
I would love to hear your criticisms or kudos for anything about the
code or it's operation as it stands, especially since it's my first
python program, many thanks, DaveT.

freshrpms-release
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Any idea when "yum install freshrpms-release" will have something
to install for fc7?
