preupgrade, some issues
by Josep Puigdemont
Hi,
I was testing preupgrade (F8->rawhide), and I hit a couple of problems:
The first issues was that the hard drive units in F8 have a different
order in F9 (at least for my HW [1]), so /dev/sda in F8 becomes /dev/sdb
in F9, and this makes the installer complain that it doesn't find the
upgrade images.
I solved this changing sda6 to sdb6 in the following line
in /boot/grub/menu.lst:
stage2=hd:sda6:/upgrade/minstg2.img
If I didn't change this anaconda would ask me for the location of the
ISO image, which seems to default to /upgrade/minstg2.img.
With the changes mentioned above, Anaconda starts (in text mode), and
goes on as to let me configure grub, but then it pops up the following
error message:
"Unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem
with the generation of your install tree."
I can then choose to either "exit installer" or "retry". Every time I
hit "retry" the following error is printed on the console:
ERROR: Error running /usr/sbin/lspci: No such file or directory
I used preupgrade-0.9.2-1.fc8.
/Josep

superuser console?
by Alain PORTAL
As I'm still using Fedora Core 6, I'm really lost with a big jump in F9...
In FC6, there was a (KDE) menu entry for a console in fully user mode.
And I can't find it in F9.
Is it a KDE or a Fedora non-feature?

Ping for man-pages-fr / shadow-utils conflict
by Bruno Wolff III
I am seeing a conflict between man-pages-fr and shadow-utils in rawhide
starting Wednesday. This is bug 444767. I filed it with shadow-utils,
though perhaps man-pages-fr would have been better since it was its update
that started the problem.
It doesn't look like anything has been done about thi as yet. This is
proably a minor thing, but will look bad if its in the final release and
I would expect there is an easy fix as to who owns the French version of
the man page for vipw.

audacity for F9?
by Joe Smith
I get sound from rhythmbox, youtube, even sox, but nothing out of
audacity. The application seems to run fine, it just doesn't produce any
sound.
Its (Edit > Preferences) output is set for
ALSA: HDA NVidia: ALC861 Digital hw:(0,1)
Twiddling the Pulseaudio mixer levels didn't help.
Ideas?

Bogus service startup/shutdown messages
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
When I boot into runlevel 3, log in and then enter "init 5" I get the
following output:
Calling the system activity data collector (sadc):
Starting irqbalance:
Fuse filesystem already available.
Fuse control filesystem already available.
Mounting other filesystems: [ OK ]
error: sg_persist not found
Registering binary handler for qemu applications
Starting jexec servicesStarting anacron: [ OK ]
I'm wondering why this happens as most of these services are defined to run
in level 3-5 so they don't need to be started here. I checked the
config/symlinks using irqbalance as an example:
[root@nexus ~]# chkconfig --list irqbalance
irqbalance 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
[root@nexus ~]# find /etc/rc.d/ -iname "*irq*"|sort
/etc/rc.d/init.d/irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K87irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc1.d/K87irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/S13irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S13irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc4.d/S13irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S13irqbalance
/etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K87irqbalance
How can I get rid of these superfluous service starts?
Regards,
Dennis

Problems with intel graphics after update to F9-rawhide
by José Abílio Matos
After having used preupgrade to upgrade a dual core x86_64 I got the computer
consistently freezed after booting the computer. FWIW preupgrade worked like
a charm. :-)
I suspect that I have seen a message today about this issue but for some
reason I cann't find it. :-(
The workaround I found is to boot into level 3 and then switch to level 5. I
have removed the xorg.conf file but the problem remains. :-(
That is, it freezes whether or not there is an xorg.conf file.
The driver used is intel.
According to lspci I get:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
According to the log file it ends with:

Atheros AR5006X Wireless Network Adapter
by ravisagar@gmail.com
I have Compaq Presario C772TU Laptop. I has Atheros AR5006X Wireless Network
Adapter. Yesterday I installed Fedora 8 but I was not able to enable WiFi.
1. I tried configuring WiFi using KNetworkManager, but no luck.
2. I installed Windows driver (.inf and .sys) file in fedora using
NDISwrapper. When I tried to scan wlan0 I got the error that "Network
doesn't support Scanning: Network is Down". I then tried *ifconfig
wlan0 up*but I got following error
*SIOCSIFFLAGS..........
*How can I enable WiFi on Fedora 8. Is this problem solved in Fedora 9.
I really love Fedora and don't want to switch to any other OS.
