Fwd: [Test-Announce] I18n Test Day Thursday 2009-10-29
by He Rui
Greetings,
This week we will focus on I18N <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/I18N> ,
and the test day is coming up tomorrow:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2009-10-29
The idea of this test day is to test common usage in your desktop
applications
in your native language, and identify any problems or weaknesses. The main
focused areas are:
1. display of text in browser, open-office, etc
2. input method: IBus
3. printing
4. localization
Therefore, testing the cases in many languages is highly welcomed and
the test
cases are not limited at all. Just come to the test day, try your
favorite language
and have fun! :-)
Don't forget to leave your precious results on the sites. See you there!

Xorg memory leak?
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Hi
for about a week or so I'm seeing the xserver consuming rather large
amounts of memory on my F11 system. Right now top shows it using 1.4g
resident memory (1.8g virtual). Usually the pixmap use of Firefox is the
main culprit in such cases but even after quitting I end up with the above
memory usage. Xrestop shows a usage total of merely 30MB.
Is there a way to find out what this memory is used for? Right now I have
to log out and back in again in order to get my memory back. Could this be
a driver issue? I'm using the radeon driver with a 4850 card (r700).
Regards,
Dennis

Fedora Server distro???
by Rob Healey
Greetings All:
I have been around redhat and fedora project for a very long time, but I am
asking the question that I probably already have the answer!
With all of the bleeding edge, and my love for it, is there a server distro
out there? I am looking for the help from the rest of you that have more
knowledge than I do!
I appreciate any help that you can give to me in this regard...
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

[Test-Announce] Fedora12 Pre-RC install testing
by Li Ming
Hello,
Install testing again :),from Oct 28- Nov 04,we are doing Pre-RC
install testing.Testers, could you help test and post your test results?
From Nov 04 - Nov 11,we will run RC install testing which is the last
install testing before GA. In order to make sure there are no big issues
which will affect the RC testing and GA release, we will run this Pre-RC
install testing from today to Nov 4.It's just a small test,so without
physical ISO media for testing, testers have to execute cases on
rawhide. For guidance on downloading and installing rawhide, see [1].
We have made a few changes to the test cases based on several of
the bugs uncovered by previous test runs and created a test matrix for
this test:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Fedora_12_Pre-RC_Install
If get some defects during testing, please refer to bug reporting
guidance[2], any question,get help from:

PolicyKit.conf is now???
by Tom Horsley
In fedora 11 someone posted this wondrous tidbit of wisdom which made my
life much simpler:
edit /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf
Add this stuff inside the config tag:
<config version="0.1">
<match user="root">
<return result="yes"/>
</match>
</config>
That says the answer to any policykit question about what root can
do is "yes dammit!"
There is no such file in fedora 12, and no policykit files I look
at even appear to use xml anymore.
Anyone know how to teach policykit that root is by God root (or know
if that is finally the sane default now)?

How in the blue blazes does cron work these days?
by Tom Horsley
New fedora 12 system: There is nothing in /etc/anacrontab, there is nothing
in /etc/crontab, there is nothing but comments in all files in /etc/cron.d,
there is nothing in /var/spool/cron, there is nothing in /etc/sysconfig/cron.
Running "strings" on crond doesn't reveal any other path names.
Why then is cron running and /var/log/cron recording cron jobs that execute
from the /etc/cron.daily directory, etc?
Where the devil has cron configuration been hidden now? Why doesn't the man
page for cron or anacron mention it? What is going on?

rawhide yum update fails
by David L
I installed f12 alpha right after it was released and updated
a few times before I had to abandon it due to pulseaudio
problems. I just tried to boot to that rawhide partition and
update and it says there is nothing to do even though I know
there are hundreds of updates since the last time I booted
to that partition. Why does it think there are no updates?
Also, when I try to install something, I get a lot of warnings
or errors like this:

Sound
by Lawrence E Graves
I am running Fedora Beta 12 on Dell Inspiron E1705 and I can't get any
sound. I have Pandora and it freezes up and won't let me do anything on
that site. Will someone look at the permissions concerning pulseaudio
if that is indeed the problem. I don't know.

ksmd - what is expected behavior?
by Tom London
I'm running Rawhide with a qemu-kvm VM that runs WinXP.
I'm noticing 'ksmd' running at a constant 15-25% of my cpu, for example:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
32 root 25 5 0 0 0 S 21.2 0.0 2:06.75 ksmd
2265 tbl 20 0 1227m 530m 8256 R 17.2 13.5 3:09.05 qemu-kvm
1599 root 20 0 220m 42m 17m S 5.3 1.1 0:55.02 Xorg
2203 tbl 20 0 1234m 62m 24m S 5.0 1.6 0:28.93 rhythmbox
Checking, I see that "ksmd" is running, but "ksmtuned" is not.
System is Thinkpad X200 with 4GB RAM. VM image is configured at 512MB.
Is this "to be expected" behavior?
