I'm using ktorrent because it has more junk on the screen to keep
you occupied while waiting :-). One of the things it displays in the
status is very similar to other torrent clients, and I've never
seen any explanation of it. There are two boxes, one labeled
Leechers: the other labeled Seeders: Inside the boxes are numbers
like this: 5(10) or 1(1).
WHAT IN THE BLUE BLAZES DOES THAT MEAN?
Will I have to download the source to a torrent client, and decrypt
the code that prints status to find out why there are two numbers
and what the one in parens means versus the one not in parens?
Its cryptic stuff like this what causes unrest :-).

When downloading is complete, it may stay around and seed the file as a seed so that
others can complete their download. The term leech is also used for peers that have
very poor upload/download ratios or leave the swarm immediately after their

of the bandwidth in a swarm.
I'm on the torrent now, getting 12KB/s down and pushing 20KB/s up. As people
complete the download it will get faster (hopefully).
It would be great if I could use both my broadband connections to pull the files...

I know what seeders and leechers are, what I don't know is why it
prints two different numbers for each one and what they mean :-).
To me it seems like reading an inventory list at a hardware store and
finding an entry that says
Hammers: 12(47)
Do we have 12 hammers or do we have 47 hammers? What the heck is the gui
trying to tell me here?

12 is the number you are connected to, 47 is the number availible in the
swarm.

Ah-HA! So it is the number of hammers in stock versus the number of
hammers in the entire world. Thanks! Another bit of trivia to
squirrel away in my brain :-).
Meanwhile, I'm up to 58% this morning downloading the x86_64 dvd.
Hopefully, it will all be there by the time I get home this afternoon.

Perhaps you could post a small screenshot
so we get some context? I'm not a KDE
person (ick, to be frank I despise Qt/KDE with a passion for UI nonsense like
this), but I'd guess that it's the listing of the maximum available versus the
number of active connections up- and downstream on your system.

From the ktorrent source (plugins/infowidget/infowidget.cpp, line 405
or so):
m_seeders->setText(QString("%1 (%2)")
.arg(s.seeders_connected_to).arg(s.seeders_total));
m_leechers->setText(QString("%1 (%2)")
.arg(s.leechers_connected_to).arg(s.leechers_total));
The first number is the number of seeders (or leechers) you are
currently communicating with. The number in parentheses is the total
number of seeders (or leechers) in the torrent cloud.

Same as every other BT client. Seeders are those who have a completely
downloaded file and are uploading only there are 10 seeders who have the
file you are getting, but only 5 are connected to the swarm. Likewise
there is 1 leech (someone other than you) in the swarm (that's the
number in parentheses) and 1 is uploading to the swarm. Note that not
everyone is uploading to you at any one time, but when your BT asks the
swarm for a particular packet 1 of them will respond.
If you do study the source, maybe you can figure out why sometimes I
have a lot of seeders/leeches in the swarm, but no one is uploading to
me, (AAAAAAARGH!). or (worse?) I get speeds of 1 or 2kbps or less
(double AAAAAAARGH!)
