Ok... this is probably a dumb question. I booted up snap3. I opened a
terminal, su -, and then installed ekiga. I selected shutdown from the
menu, and it seemed to hang (not fully shutting down).
I reboot, log in, and there is no ekiga.
so.. who ate my rpms?

Stupid question - did you have an overlay?
Yes.. this was the command I ran:
./livecd-iso-to-disk.sh --noverify --reset-mbr --xo --overlay-size-mb
512 --swap-size-mb 256 F10-Snap2-i686-Live.iso /dev/sdb1

Not followng... I would have assumed this would have persistend on my SD
card.

Mount your SD card, then edit the boot/olpc.fth file, down at the bottom you'll
see a line that contains "reset_overlay" remove that option (don't remove
anything else). It causes the overlay to reset itself on each boot.

I've removed reset_overlay from:
" root=UUID=4914-5E63 rootfstype=vfat rw liveimg overlay=UUID=4914-5E63 quiet rhgb
persistenthome=mtd0 reset_overlay" to boot-file
So that it now looks like:
" root=UUID=4914-5E63 rootfstype=vfat rw liveimg overlay=UUID=4914-5E63 quiet rhgb
persistenthome=mtd0" to boot-file
However, after booting to the live user desktop gives the error:
unable to update ICE authority file /home/liveuser/.ICEauthority
And at that point it just hangs.
Is it possible that the persistenthome designation may also need to be changed?

As mentioned in my blog (you are reading Fedora Planet and thus my blog,
right? :-), the current version of livecd-iso-to-disk is defaulting to
doing an overlay reset on every boot. This is to help reduce the
likelihood of problems due to running out of space on the overlay since
we now keep /home on the nand and settings have pretty much entirely
moved to the homedir.
That said, I'll probably switch the default back so that we don't reset
the overlay on every boot for manual livecd-iso-to-disk runs, but I'm at
the same time leaning towards having the shipped SD cards with Fedora
preloaded set up as such.

Out of space in the overlay manifests itself with weird hangs and
non-obvious problems on boot. Overlay resetting is at least relatively
straight-forward :)

I can't count the number of times my usblive overlay has ran out of space
(starts with increasing numbers of ext3 errors at boot), requiring me to set
it back up again. Even a "huge" 8GB overlay doesn't last as long as you
would think it should. One thing I was very glad to see in F10live is that
it now has /var/cache/yum in tmpfs, which extends the life by quite a bit.
As long as we're not using a proper unionfs for persistence that *doesn't
die*, shouldn't there be an easier way to determine how much life is left in
the LVM snapshot before a reset is necessary?
