xfree86 issues
by Chris Locke
I'm having problems with XF86. It will not let me run a resolution
higher than 1024x768. I have a 19inch monitor so it is rather ugly. I
have tried using different combination of drivers for both monitor or
video card and nothing works. This system dual boots between redhat 9
and fedora and under redhat 9 I can run 1600x1200 no problem. I tried
editing the XF86Config file by hand to give it the same settings as my
redhat install but it still goes back to 1024x768. Anyone else have this
problem or know of a resolution for it?
thanks
Chris Locke

Boot Loader Detection: GRUB or LILO?
by Charles Curley
Is there any way to detect which boot loader is the working one?
Simply detecting whether a grub or lilo package is installed may not
be sufficient, especially in the case where both are installed. I
suppose I could look to see which is more recent, grub.conf or
lilo.conf, but I can think of several scenarios unde which this would
fail.
It's time to update my bare metal recovery scripts
(http://www.charlescurley.com/Linux-Complete-Backup-and-Recovery-HOWTO.html)
to handle grub, and I'd like to detect the current boot loader if
possible.

Fedora bittorrent
by Neil Aspinall
The site for the Fedora bittorrents, http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu, seems to
be down at the moment and has been for a while.
Are there torrents available elsewhere? Will this (very useful service) be
available again for the Fedora release on Monday?
Cheers,
Neil

Setting Default System Theme
by jeff
When a new user is added to the system, by default they get the Bluecurve
theme. How is this default changed to another theme?
I've tried the following files, which seemed pertinent, but they didn't do the
trick:
/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
/etc/skel/.gtkrc
/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas
/etc/gconf/schemas/metacity.schemas
/usr/share/themes/Default/gtk/gtkrc
Where is it hiding? :)
Thanks,
-Jeff

Laptop power saving
by Philip Balister
Does anyone have a summary of what laptop power saving type features are
expected to work on Fedora Core? For example echo N > /proc/acpi/procesor/
performance doesn't seem to adjust the clock speed.
Any comments on laptop things would be helpful. By and larger I am very
happy with Fedora on my Dell Inspiron 600M.

Speedtouch USB with Fedora 0.95
by Yann Zinzius
Hello,
I'm user of redhat linux for a long time and I have a speedtouch usb
modem. I saw on the fedora kernel that the speedtch module was
precompiled in the kernel package.
Until now I used the speedtouchconf script to install my speedtouch usb
on pppoa mode but I would like to try using the kernel module provided
with fedora, and maybe using it on a the futur 2.6 kernel.
My problem is to know if someone install already this modem on a fedora
system and how ? Because it seems that if I'm looking to the standard
procedures as presented in http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch that the
"linux-atm" or at least "libatm" has to be installed. And I don't find
something similar on the installation tree.
When i try to install the linux-atm manually using the rpms from the atm
website it's install, but something else is missing a "nas0" device
and/or module to install an nas0 connection. So is it external to the
kernel or as to be compiled ?
Please someone help me ?
Thanks in advance
Yann

Paul, I reiterate, Red Hat screwed something up and these people were
added inadvertently. They can't unsubscribe themselves. Someone from Red
Hat has to. If you were on the redhat list you would see that Marc from
Red Hat is monitoring the lists and removing these people manually.
Please all, don't jump on these people. They can't get themselves off.

ATI Radeon 9600 bug report
by Terry Cole
Dear Mike,
We recently tested fedora on a dual Athlon machine with an ATI
Radeon 9600 with two outputs, VGA and DVI. Chipsets 4150 and 4170
combined on the one board.
I tested this every way I could think of, modifying the XF86Config
for one or two screens, etc. But no joy. I'll get more details after the
weekend. VESA was fairly stable.
Regards, TC

yum/apt and dependencies
by Greg Mitchell
I ran into a little problem updating my machine
tonight with yum. I issued "yum update" and it gave me
a list of 4 dependencies and 3 of them were fine. The
fourth was a dependency on mozilla (from open-office).
I have mozilla-firebird installed and don't wish to
have mozilla (konqueror is my browser of choice,
followed by firebird). To resolve the problem, I
manually downloaded and installed openoffice (with
--nodeps). It worked fine, then yum update did not
bother me about mozilla. Is there a way for me to tell
yum to ignore a specific dependency in the future? Or
is there at least an easy way to see what requires
that dependency (I went through the rpms infos by
hand)?
Also, are there any decent apt repositories out there
for FC as well as general purpose rpms?
Thanks.
