Large scp and ftp transfer fail under latest fedora.
by Ernest L. Williams Jr.
Hi,
Before I performed my most recent fedora update I transfer a 5.4 GB file
to another machine.
Now I am ready to transfer it back and it is failing. Has anyone else
ran into this problem. IS there some new file transfer limit?

Java for Mozilla
by Mel Seder
I went to Sun's Java site and installed the rpm for j2re-1.4.2-01-fes
and subsequently ran rpm j2re.......... which appeared to run error
free.
My games in Yahoo/Java still do not work.
Is there another setting to make?

Gnome error
by Joe Dell'Orfano
Sorry if I'm repeating stuff here, but I couldn't find reference to this
error in the mail list archives. I'm running fedora 0.95 with the smp
kernel on a pentium-4 class system. If I log out of gnome and log back
in I get an error with gnome-settings-daemon:
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log
in."
Then it fails to load several of my panel applets. This error happens
every time I log out of gnome and log back in. The error goes away if I
reboot the computer, but it reappears if I log out and in again.
Interestingly, I can log out and in if I end the
bonobo-activation-server.
I have searched Google for an answer to this problem. It seems to be a
common error reported on multiple distros and as near as I can tell, it
is related to the control-panel version, although I apparently already
have the latest version installed.
Any help with this would be appreciated. If I am rehashing an old
discussion, my apologies.

Fedora bittorrent
by Neil Aspinall
The site for the Fedora bittorrents, http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu, seems to
be down at the moment and has been for a while.
Are there torrents available elsewhere? Will this (very useful service) be
available again for the Fedora release on Monday?

Setting Default System Theme
by jeff
When a new user is added to the system, by default they get the Bluecurve
theme. How is this default changed to another theme?
I've tried the following files, which seemed pertinent, but they didn't do the
trick:
/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
/etc/skel/.gtkrc
/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_interface.schemas
/etc/gconf/schemas/metacity.schemas
/usr/share/themes/Default/gtk/gtkrc
Where is it hiding? :)
Thanks,
-Jeff

Laptop power saving
by Philip Balister
Does anyone have a summary of what laptop power saving type features are
expected to work on Fedora Core? For example echo N > /proc/acpi/procesor/
performance doesn't seem to adjust the clock speed.
Any comments on laptop things would be helpful. By and larger I am very
happy with Fedora on my Dell Inspiron 600M.

CUPS nightmare revisited
by Bill Johnson
Thanks to all who responded to my original post. I'm closer to being able
to print now. I can print from my server, and I can see the queues from
my laptop, but when I try to print from a test page from the CUPS web
interface on the laptop, I get an error reported on the web page that says
"Unable to connect to IPP host: Success" and nothing prints. Here is what
shows if I do a tac /var/log/messages:

Any suggestions about what I need to do to get this printing working? My
original post is below, including my configuration.
Thanks!

Subject: CUPS nightmare
I have a home network configured as follows:
Server - running Fedora Core .95 beta.
Laptop - running Redhat 8.0
Connected via Netgear RP114(?) web safe router
Printer is HP841C connected to Server via usb
Printing from laptop worked fine under previous config (Redhat 7.3 was on
previously on server, and printing was via lpd), but I cannot get printing
to work from laptop now.
Cups is installed on server and printer works fine when printing from
server.
Printer has been configured on laptop every possible way, but will not
print. Have read google posts, howtos, and cups docs for 2 days, but
nothing works.
nmap shows port 631 on server, but DOES NOT show it on laptop. Firewalls
are completely off on both laptop and server.
Question 1 - Are there issues with doing this in fedora? Am I hitting
some known problem with the beta?
Question 2 - Can I just abandon CUPS and use the old lpd? It worked
perfectly for me, and was not difficult to configure. I can't seem to
find it on the new distro. Is it not provided with fedora?
Question 3 - Is the NETGEAR router a possible problem? Could it be
blocking visibility to port 631? Any suggestions about that if so?
Question 4 - Is there anybody on this list who has managed to get a
similar printing scenario up and running?
Thanks in advance for the help. Getting a printer to work should not be
this difficult. I must be doing something terribly wrong, but can't
figure it out. Obviously, if I can't print with fedora, I can't use
fedora, so I must resolve this.
Regards,
Bill Johnson
