browser problem
by Shadhin rahman
My browser was not working properly, it did not
execute any javasript enable pages. So, I enabled
java on my browser. it did not help. I installed
most updated browser, netscape 7.1 and mozilla 1.5.
Unfortunately it did not help either. I installed
most updated version of jvm. Now when I tried to
launch netscape, I get an error message and I am not
able to view java enabled webpages. The error message
is given below
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/local/netscape/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
[/usr/local/netscape/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so:
undefined symbol: __vt_17nsGetServiceByCID]
Anyone has any idea about how can I fix this error.
P.S Special thanks to Aron Bannet and Steve Bergmen
for giving instruction about text mode.

Help?.... Fatal Installation Error
by Karl Dyson
Hi All,
I'm attempting to install RH9 on a system. RH has been installed before, and was running fine. Currently the system is running XP with no problems. I get the following error:
==================
There was an error installing XXXXX. This can indicate media failure, lack of disk space, and/ or hardware problems. This is fatal error and your install will be aborted. Please verify your media and try install again.
==================
The reason I filled in the XXXXX is that the install stops with this message at various points. Of the 7 or 8 attempts I've made to install, it's not stopped on the same package. Additionally, I've attempted the install via 2 sets of CDs, and also via HTTP and FTP. The HTTP and FTP installs were done from fresh .iso files downloaded from a mirror. In the case of the CD installs, it doesn't matter whether I use the DVDROM or the CDROM.
The first set of CD media I tried has been used successfully to build multiple other systems, so I'm assuming there is something the installer does not like with the system? The only change to the system since it last ran RedHat was an upgrade from 512meg to 1024meg of RAM.
I'm trying to install on sdc. /boot (100meg) on sdc1, swap (512meg) on sdc2 and / (the rest of sdc) on sdc3. Grub is my bootloader of choice and is on sda. This has been working before, with both RedHat and Gentoo.
System spec:
Asus P3V4X with BIOS rev 1003
PIII 1Ghz
1024Mb RAM
Matrox G400 Max Dual Head
Adaptec 2940U2W
sda = IBM 18Gig 10k Ultra 160
sdb = IBM 18Gig 10k Ultra 160
sdc = IBM 9Gig 10k Ultra2
hdb = 36x CDROM
hdc = DVDROM
hdd = LS120 Floppy drive
Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance,
Karl

ACPI implementation
by rada and gus
I don't know if this is the "correct" forum for addressing this
question/problem but I have been impressed by the responses and
attitudes on this list. I have been using RedHat for three years and I
have RH9 on my presario 2800 laptop. Works really fine, but I can't
tell how much battery power is left when running on battery. I've tried
to understand how to enable ACPI, but recompiling the kernel was the
easiest part of the process to understand. I am not a newbie, but the
process far surpasses my computing skills.
I've read that other distro(s) implement ACPI "right out of the box".
Is there any chance for the upcoming release to have this feature
enabled by default on the laptop install? Gus Degreef

Re: browser problem
by David Jansen
I am not sure if it was this exact message, but I also had to fiddle
around a little to get java (Sun version, 1.4.2) to work. Turns out it
comes with various versions of the plugin:
$ ls -l /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 4096 Jun 28 10:11 ns4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 4096 Jun 28 10:11 ns610
drwxr-xr-x 2 root bin 4096 Jun 28 10:11 ns610-gcc32
And this last one, ns610-gcc32 is the one you want for RedHat 9,
compiled using gcc 3.2

rhl website?
by Alex Kanavin
Any idea when it's going to be back?
=======================
Red Hat remains excited about the open development process announced on
Monday. We're currently reworking the content of this site to clarify
questions people have raised since our announcement. We'll have the site
restored as soon as possible.
=======================
I wonder what the questions were - the website while it was still avaiable
looked good enough to me. I also have that disturbing thought that one
should read the above as "Red Hat is currently considering going back to
the closed development model"...

quota block size
by Walid Shaari
Hiya,
I have a file system, where the block size if 4kb,
/sbin/tune2fs -l /dev/hdb2 |grep "Block size"
Block size: 4096
but when i define quotas for users it treats the block size of that
file system as 1K, for example a 10MB would be 10240 blocks where it
should be 2560, is that normal?
