An official trademark policy for CheapBytes-type RHL CDs?
by James J. Ramsey
Way back when, it used to be that those who burned
CD-Rs from the downloaded Red Hat Linux ISOs and sold
them (i.e. CheapBytes) were allowed to refer to those
CDs as "Red Hat Linux" just so long as they didn't
refer to them as "Offical Red Hat Linux," a trademark
reserved for Red Hat's retail distribution. For
whatever reason, Red Hat stopped this practice, and
now CheapBytes
<http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart>, LinuxCD
<http://www.linuxcd.org/view_item.php?id_version=236>,
and OSDisc
<http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/index.html>
refer to their Red Hat CD-R by pseudonyms.
Now as long as Red Hat sold CDs by retail, this was
not such a bad situation. Those who didn't know that
"Pink Tie," "Red Tux," and "Blue Jacket" were just Red
Hat in disguise could simply buy their CDs from Red
Hat, if downloading and burning the ISOs wasn't an
option. However, with Red Hat now only making the ISOs
available for download, the only ones who can provide
CDs for those who can't make their own are CheapBytes
and its ilk--and CheapBytes and its ilk are forbidden
to call their Red Hat CDs by their true names. This is
a recipe for confusion.
IMHO, what is needed is some trademark policy that
specifically allows CheapBytes, etc. to name future
RHL CDs in a non-obfuscatory fashion, so that
potential RHL users can actually *find* the CDs. Maybe
a trademark specifically for CheapBytes and similar
resellers, i.e. "Downloaded Red Hat Linux"?

Red Hat 10
by Chuck Talk
"RedHat is actually leaving the "boxed distro" business as far as
redhat 10 is concerned. This complies with the shift of the actual
"user" distro's status which is now called "Red Hat Linux Project." You
can read more about that and the shift of development power somewhere
on redhat's site. If someone can provide the link I would be much
obliged, I'm too tired to go digging."
Thanks, I had read that on the http://rhl.redhat.com/ site, but the content
went away. I am just wondering if we can get CD's somehow other than
through a download that will be signed by Red Hat without violating their
copyright
or whatever. I notice a lot of posting about Cheap Bytes, and I know that
Europe is doing doing Red Hat Magazine (I saw it on a European Red Hat site
once - have to go checking again).
"RedHat is basically going to focus on selling their enterprise line of
stuff while drawing on the base distro as a source of packages and
advancements. Basically, the new distro is gonna be like the testing
grounds for the new technology to be included into the enterprise line.
ISO's will still be available for the distro for download from the usual
mirrors. As far as redhat magazine I know nothing about that. Hope I was of
some help."
Yes, you were. My family just gets ticked when I download ISO's (I make
them get off the net connection). If Red Hat burns or blesses the burns of
the ISOs anywhere - then that is okay too, I suppose. I know that several
other vendors are staying in the stores, but I would like to say - hey! I
would subsribe to a Red Hat Linux Project magazine (especially if they had
like quarterly updates and such on DVD - hint! hint!).
Thanks again Jack.
Much oliged,
Chuck

Upcoming Redhat 10 (or whatever it will be called)
by Chuck Talk
Okay, I have read news stories saying Red Hat will be leaving the retail
distro channel. Can someone clarify if this is true? It would not bother me
so much, but will it also mean the end of the boxed set? Will Red Hat go
with a magazine style subsription as they are doing in Europe (I believe -
my German and Italian are not perfect, so I am only guessing that RedHat
Magazine is run by Red Hat)?
Does anyone know the answers? Just want to know what to do when Severn
becomes the next version.
Sincerely,
Chuck Talk

/usr boot time dependencies
by Paul Jakma
hi,
i've noticed the following:
[paul@fogarty paul]$ which id
/usr/bin/id
[paul@fogarty paul]$ which uniq
/usr/bin/uniq
[paul@fogarty paul]$ rpm -ql tcp_wrappers | grep libwrap.so
/usr/lib/libwrap.so
/usr/lib/libwrap.so.0
/usr/lib/libwrap.so.0.7.6
The problem with this is that:
- id and uniq are required by init scripts, eg to setup IPv6 in the
network init script, and portmap init script requires it too.
- portmap resides in /bin but links to libwrap.so - which is in
/usr/lib and may not be available.
so would it be possible for:
- the coreutils package to /truely/ be core, ie everything it
installs should be either to /bin or /sbin. If needs be it should be
pruned of utils which are not really core.
- tcp_wrappers to install to /lib, not /usr/lib. This is a fairly
important library, why is it installed to /usr/lib?
thanks (from someone who boots machines from NFS, with /usr as a
seperate export).
regards,

unrecognized mount option nodev
by Alvin Smith
I am running RH9.
When mounting smb filesystems I receive the message "unrecognized mount
option nodev". Sometimes, but not always, the computer hangs at this
point during boot.
Does anyone know what might cause this?
Thank you.

Is there anyone out here that uses this program?
I see Severn has 1.8.4 and I was having problems with 1.8.1 in rel 9
If I could I would like to talk to you in an e-mail exchange for how to
get several
reports to work.
I have Severn running and so far those things that I use on a single
work station are
ok. Thank You.

DVD ISOs for next RHEL/RHLP releases?
by James Ralston
Has Red Hat made a decision as to whether the next releases of RHEL
and RHLP will be made available as DVD ISO images (in addition to the
standard multiple-disc CD ISO images)?
DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW burners are getting pretty inexpensive
nowadays. If I had a reason to expect that the next RHEL/RHLP
releases would be available as DVD ISO images, I'd go evaluate some
burners...
Thanks,

Numlock on at boot/ X startup
by Charles Bronson
Is RedHat planning on adding the option of having the Numlock on at boot and/or
when Gnome starts up? I know KDE has an preference setting for this and Mandrake
has an RPM to handle it. Maybe it is a topic for kernel developers and the Gnome
team but RH has spent so much time on the usability that I was hoping they would
come up with a fix if the separate developer groups weren't.
Thank you.

RedHat9 unable to print on W2k share.
by Klaus Zahradnik
Hy guys!
I am about to loose my sanity. I have a notebook, which I carry between
work and home. At home I have a W2k Workstation which shares a HP840c
printer. This one works like a charme. No porblems.
At work however, I have a W2k machine sharing a Brother HL1030. I have no
chance of printing on this printer. All the other workstations (W2k) are
able to print on it.
I double checked share settings, username, passwords... you name it.
I can connect to the printer via smbclient manually by doing:
smbclient //192.168.21.103/hl1030 -P -U klaus
But when I try to configure the printer with the gnome gui thing, I always
get the error:
unable to connect to samba host, retryin in 60 seconds...
I did set the logging of cups to debug, and attached the
/var/log/cups/error_log as a gzipped file to this eMail.
I hope somebody has some ideas.....
Thanks in advance,
Klaus

[Fwd: Severn kernel on Red Hat 9]
by Ian Pilcher
Has anyone managed to get Red Hat 9 working with the Severn kernel(s)?
I would really like to use the i686 SMP kernel, since it fixes an IRQ
routing bug and allows the system to recognize my USB scanner and
printer (without any performance-sucking workarounds).
Unfortunately, the RH9 X server segfaults when I try to run it on top of
the Severn kernel (XFree86-4.3.0-2, mga driver).
Any ideas? Thanks!
