monitor frequency problem
by Mario Gomes
I've installed Severn onto a Shuttle SK41G. Below are the specs for the
motherboard taken from the Shuttle website:
FX41
CPU Socket : AMD Socket A, support 266/200MHz FSB CPU
Chipsets : North bridge-VIA KM266, South bridge-VIA 8235
Memory : Spoort DDR 266/200 * 2
On Board VGA : VIA Savage8, 8-32 MB VGA share memory
On Board Audio : Realtek ALC650 support 5.1 channel audio, Support n/Out
Expansion Slot : PCI * 1, AGP * 1
IDE interface : ATA-133
I was able to install Severn in text mode to the point that the computer
reboots. The problem arises when the reboot is processing, eventually
the screen goes blank and I get this error message:
out of range
26Hz / 21Khz
I suspect that the monitor frequency is incorrectly set and I somehow
need to change this before the system starts loading. The monitor I
have is a GEM LCD and the frequency recommended is (H) 30Khz-60Khz and
(V) 50Hz-75 Hz. I would appreciate if someone has any suggestions on
how to correct this problem.
Thanks in advance.

Fedora's Gaim no longer works with Yahoo
by Christopher A. Williams
Anyone else notice that the version of Gaim that comes from fedora.us no
longer works with Yahoo. Yahoo has updated their system so that it
apparently requires some changes and they are no longer accepting
connections from Gaim. Ymessenger 1.0.4 for Linux does work - the RH9
RPM installs correctly on Severn.
Since I use more than Yahoo Messenger, it would be nice to see an update
to Gaim out there. I think there is a newer version which does work
correctly.
Cheers,
Chris

Okay, so what exactly is Fedora?
by Cannon, Andrew
Hi All,
We use RH8 on our production machines, and I keep a watching eye on the
mailing lists for anything important. The only problem being that I was away
last week, when Fedora was announced. (Great timing on my part!) What I'm
wondering is, is a Fedora release equivalent to say a Rh7 or RH8 release, or
is it like the development versions of RH?
TIA
Andy

Bugzilla filing
by Charles Curley
Some questions on Bugzilla.
Background: I have something I'd like to file against severn (ISO
image files dated Jul 18). When I set up kickstart to install the
Office/Productivity group ("@ Office/Productivity"), and then exclude
OpenOffice.org ("-openoffice"), I still get two other OOo RPMs,
openoffice-i18n and openoffice-libs. They have no reason to be
installed other than OOo, so they should also be excluded.
* Do I file on Red Hat's bugzilla or fedora's?
* Red Hat's Bugzilla "version" field has no entry for severn. Which
version do I file it under?
* Should I use "openoffice" or "installation" in the component field?
(There are no doubt other packages I could similarly do without, but
at 230 MB for the pair, on a testbed computer with a 2 GB drive,
that's egregious.)

Support of apt for fedora
by Jochen Schmitt
Hello,
I have a question or suggestion for the fedora project:
Do you plan to support apt for tedora, so you have a apt
repository where you can updated new releases packages with a
simple
# apt-get install <packagename>
I assume, that you could not support this suggestion for the
first release which is planed for novemter 2003. But it will be
nice, if you can implementat this suggestion for the next final
release.
Best Regards:

RE: Support of apt for fedora
by Meyer, Andre
Hi all
I have been using Synaptic for apt-get for some time now and it works very
well. I have been able to install a lot of packages without any trouble at
all.
up2date is not too bad, but the number of packages offered is very limited.
Yesterday, I realised that I could not subscribe to the Severn channel. Is
this because I do not have paid subscription to RHN? It would be a better
idea to just open the RHN to include a wide variety of packages, maybe
indicating the status of development. Don't be so proprietary about this.
Ximian's Red Carpet also looks nice and has some good packages.

Will Fedora Project maintain other packages... let's say PureFTPd?
What about "deprecated" packages which have been replaced by new major
version such as apache 1.3.2x???
That means they have to compile PHP twice for every major version, and
other packages...
/me still using 1.3.28 and PHP 4.3.3 on something that is suppose to
be RedHat Linux 9.
