libxml2mod.so : undefined symbol
by Murali Potla
I have problem with redhat-config-packages and yum on my FC1. it looks
like it is a problem with the python and libxml2.
I have upgraded my box from Red Hat linux 9 to Fedora Core 1.
I am getting the following error whenever i launch yum or
redhat-config-pcakages
import libxml2mod
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/libxml2mod.so: undefined
symbol: xmlTextReaderIsValid
I am unable to use these tools. command line rpm works fine though.
Are there any issues reported while upgrading from RHL to fedora ?

Why isn't this done with a newsgroup? It seems to me that it would be much easier to follow topics?

Turn off Animation
by Charles Howse
Hello,
I'm sure this is much easier than it seems to me, but I have searched my
entire 'start' menu in FC1, Gnome, and can't find how to turn off the
animation when I minimize a window.
Can someone enlighten me, please?

how much disk space do i need for FC1?
by Emiliano Brunetti
Trying to get to work kpackage (no luck!) i realized that on my system
FC1 is really *huge*.
[ian@brunettie ian]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 2.3G 1.6G 626M 72% /
none 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda7 6.4G 4.2G 1.9G 69% /usr
Isn't it a bit too much 1.6 GB on root and 4.2 Gb on /usr? This is a
desktop install, nothing special. Is it supposed to be so large?
I really don't get it. Maybe i did something wrong at install time,
however i could uninstall some useless (to me) packages with synaptic,
and really made no difference (freed 64 megs 'only').

KM400 Unichrome Graphics
by Martin Halford
Hi,
I'm new to the list have recently built a budget system based on the
Asus A7V8X motherboard to try out Fedora Core 1.
The only problem I have had is with the integrated Unichrome graphics
which does not seem to be supported. Normal displays are fine using a
generic driver, but in games such as Tux Racer or Flightgear it falls over.
Someone on the Via forum has had a go at trying to adapt RH9 drivers but
has failed. Does anyone here have a solution.

RHEL WS?
by WipeOut
I have just been looking at the RHEL versions and the WS basic version
is not too badly priced, especially for us as a startup, but we would
want to use it for our servers.. :)
Is anyone familiar with this product?? Can it be used for web/email
servers or is it restricted in some way?

Trying to kill a process that just won't die...
by Gregory Gulik
Ok, it's been a while since I ran into something like this but I have a
process hung that I can't seem to kill. It's a gtar process doing a
backup of my personal files to a large drive I use as a backup device.
The process info:
root 11952 1 0 Jan17 ? 00:00:00 gtar
--use-compress-program=/usr/local/admin/bin/gzip1 --totals -cvl
--exclude core --exclude .thumbnail --exclude xover-cache --exclude cache
Files that are open:
[root@penguin root]# lsof -p 11952
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
gtar 11952 root cwd DIR 22,66 4096 65 /backup/greg
gtar 11952 root rtd DIR 3,2 4096 2 /
gtar 11952 root txt REG 3,2 153992 368163 /bin/tar
gtar 11952 root mem REG 3,2 107724 228281 /lib/ld-2.3.2.so
gtar 11952 root mem REG 3,2 1578228 416151 /lib/tls/libc-2.3.2.so
gtar 11952 root mem REG 3,2 33513072 468527
/usr/lib/locale/locale-archive
gtar 11952 root 0r FIFO 0,5 39450 pipe
gtar 11952 root 1w REG 3,2 82 224452 /var/log/nfs.list
gtar 11952 root 2w REG 3,2 82 224452 /var/log/nfs.list
The script I use saves a list of archived files to /var/log/nfs.list
(used to work over NFS, not backs up to local drive).
I've tried every signal I could think of to use with kill but the
process just won't die. It's not using any CPU but the load average has
been over 1.0 since the process got hung (2 days ago).
All files are accessed on local drives, NFS should not be in the
equation at all.
Any ideas????
...besides a reboot of course.

Apache 2.0.47
by David Kistner
I'm running Apache 2.0.47 application that came with Fedora Core 1.
Everything was running great for quite some time. I kept my Fedora
upgraded with updates with up2date (yum) until one day something during
one of these updates somehow something killed my server beyond recovery.
I tried to recover everything with Acronis True Image ghost images but
every one was corrupt (I realize now that I was very stupid for not
testing them prior to this problem) :-(
I finally had to reinstall Fedora and reconfigure everything from
scratch but I did have a backup of my web site that was fine. So, I
copied the /var/www/html folder from my backup to the newly configured
server but now when I view my web site pages some of them display a
diamond with a question mark inside of the diamond (when viewed with
Mozilla) and a question mark (when viewed with Internet Explorer). I
can view the same html pages directly as a file (with my browser's) and
they are fine, but once I copy the files to the Apache directory I have
the diamonds displayed. I'm completely stumped on what's happening. I
Googled for an answer and struck out. So I thought I'd ask here for
help. Here's a couple of my pages that do this:

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Yum capable mirrors?
by Jean Francois Martinez
When we go to the Mirror page on Fedora's site we see a list of mirrors
but it doesn't tell us which ones are YUM or APT capable and the URL
to use for YUM/APT
This really needs to be fixed since having all fedora users depend
on a single site is slow and unreliable.
Hint: It would be still best if installer autoconfigured the mirror
according to time zone/country parms.
